We have a covered luxury pontoon boat that we use to explore the lake & guests particularly enjoy the trip to hotwater beach & a secluded hot pool only accessible by boat or a 3 to 4 hr wolk. We give a big discount to guests for a 2 & 1/2 hr trip Need at least 2 people or a $100 minimum. We can also take you rock jumping & swimming from the boat for a small fee eg $10. Can include a meal on the boat too.
Around this area you can swim, fish or hike. Bikes & kayaks for guests to use. Awake to bird song. This is a renowned area for native birds. The fat pigeons are the big, native pigeons which are becoming threatened in N.Z. However Lake Tarawera has an abundance of them. The Fat Pigeon is a great base to explore the lakes & Rotorua.

When we went to Liz & Mike's house, the first floor flat was already booked, but since they weren't home when we needed the house, they let us stay in their super cozy, beautiful house on the second floor. It was a really lovely and comfortable stay. I'm really thankful for them accepting our stay in such short notice. Me and my boyfriend were taking my parents to see a bit of New Zealand while they visited me here in Auckland from Brazil. Unfortunately the weather down at Rotorua at this time of the year was already really cold, but the heaters all worked great and kept us nice and warm inside while looking at the magnificent Lake Tarawera. We can only imagine how great that place is in summer. Thank you for having us in your lovely house!
Quiet place, only 2 of us were occupying the whole 1st floor. Easy access to the lake, we make full use of the kayak! Liz & Mike are very welcoming & friendly! Great place to stay!
Mike and Liz are a very nice and easygoing couple. They helped us a lot with the staying. The lemons which planted there are very delicious. And the house is on the halfway of the mountain and near the lake so the surroundings are quiet and elegant.
A quiet place on a beautiful lake. Liz and Mike made our stay very comfortable. Thanks for getting us to the boat trip&pools.
Both Liz and Mike made us feel very welcome and we really enjoyed their company! They provided kayaks and bikes and we took full advantage of them! The lake is within easy walking distance and there is a nice road to ride bikes on.
We absolutely loved being able to go with them on their boat for a trip to the hot pools and dinner on the water. Liz is a terrific cook! We think this boat trip is a must! It is an extra charge of $50.00 per person for the boat trip and an additional $15.00 per person for the dinner which includes a delicious main course, salad, dessert, lovely homemade lemon water and a glass of wine! WE thought this was not only a great experience but also a terrific value for the expeirence!
We had the entire basement flat to ourselves which was a real bonus. If the entire basement flat had been full of people in the other three bedrooms, with only one bathroom and a very tiny kitchen, our experience might have been very different. Note to people considering this listing as a place to stay: you are on your own for breakfast and you are a half hour drive away from town so be sure to bring your own food. Liz and Mike are very generous about allowing you to pick vegetables and herbs from their garden, but that will not be enough to feed you for dinner and you will need to provide your own breakfast.
I stayed at the Fat Pigeon for 5 nights. Liz and Mike were both so welcoming and friendly. It is great to have a kitchen area to prepare your own food. Plates/utensils/cooking ware/ etc is all available for you to use which was great. If you have an opportunity to go out on their boat (for a very reasonable extra charge), I would highly recommend it. They took me out onto beautiful Lake Terawera and to some amazing spots where we were able to soak in natural hot water pools. Beautiful. Liz would tell me amazing facts and about the history of the area which was so interesting. That afternoon trip out on their boat ended up being one of the most memorable and fun parts of my trip. Thank you to Mike & Liz for your warm hospitality!
