The Space

Lake Tarawera is a beautiful fresh water lake 25 mins from the centre of Rotorua. Beautiful, native forest surrounds this pristine lake with Mt Tarawera, an extinct volcano, providing a dramatic backdrop.

The accommodation is in a three bedroom self contained flat on the ground floor of our house. We live upstairs. The cost is $40 pp per night..There are two double rooms & the third room has 3 single beds. Also can be rented as the whole three bedroomed flat for a family or group of friends. Special rates for this depending on high or low season.

There are no shops in this area. You will need to bring your own food and beverages including breakfast food, tea, coffee and milk The. flat has its own little kitchen, bathroom, toilet, and living area. It also has a BBQ & outdoor eating area.
There is wireless internet, TV & selection of DVDs.
There are kayaks & bikes to use free of charge. You can fish for trout in the lake & are welcome to use our rod. You will need to get a fishing licence. Lake Tarawera is a small, friendly community.

We use grid connected solar power for our electricity. The first place at Lake Tarawera to do this.

At times, we will be away, but this can be an independent holiday experience with the key in a coded key box etc.

There is no public transport from Rotorua to Lake Tarawera. You will need your own car to get here.

You will notice that The Fat Pigeon is advertised twice. This is because with Airbnb we need to advertise separately for the amount of rooms.

By arrangement, & if convenient for us, you can share some meals with us; $10pp for breakfast and $15pp for evening meal. We enjoy eating healthily & in season much of our food is straight from our garden; we also cook with a solar oven.

We have a covered luxury pontoon boat that we use to explore the lake & guests particularly enjoy the trip to hotwater beach & a secluded hot pool only accessible by boat or a 3 to 4 hr wolk. We give a big discount to guests; $50 pp for a 2 1/2hr trip. Need at least 2 people or a $100 minimum. We can also take you rock jumping & swimming from the boat for a small fee eg $10.

Around this area you can swim, fish or hike. Bikes & kayaks for guests to use. Awake to bird song. This is a renowned area for native birds. The fat pigeons are the big, native pigeons which are becoming threatened in N.Z. However Lake Tarawera has an abundance of them. The Fat Pigeon is a great base to explore the lakes & Rotorua.

  • Wonderful guest house in a beautiful location! Liz & Mike are friendly and helpful hosts. We stayed only a couple of nights but we had good time in this quiet and green area.

  • We loved our two nights stay. Picked some fresh herbs from the garden to add to the pasta meal. Yum! Clean, comfortable, warm Accomodation. Try walking up the path at the back of the house to rest on a quaint wooden seat with the best view of the lake! We caught 5 fat rainbow trout harling with Goron Randle of (email hidden). He used to own this wonderful retreat! We will definitely return next year.

  • I stayed for 2 nights, and I just loved it. The location is ideal to get away from the masses, relax and enjoy the beautiful lake. Liz & Mike were travelling when I was there, so I did not meet them. But everything was described very clearly in perfect correspondence in advance. Highly recommended.

  • We had a lovely stay in the apartment. We didn't see a great deal of Mike and Liz, but when we did they were more than accommodating and we felt completely at home. The surrounding area with the lakes and forestry is stunning!

  • We didn't see very much of Liz and Mike, but they seemed nice. The place had a musty smell to it. Other than that, it was okay.

Come and explore the Bay of Plenty. We live locally and enjoy meeting the different guests we have come to stay. We have hosted people for many years; we have travellers on a cultural exchange as well as own & run holiday homes. We travel extensively & just this year we used Airbnb in Europe & loved it. Cant wait to use it again. It also gives us an insight to what travellers need & like.
