On our second night at Johnny's we really enjoyed sitting on his cool enclosed deck looking through the trees at the sunset, mountains and the jets taking off and landing dramatically nearby! One can also watch the highway traffic and be glad to not to be stuck in rush hour, and contrast that with kids riding by on bikes and neighbors walking their dogs on the quiet street in front. Room was clean, bed comfortable and earplugs blocked the city noises just fine. Enjoyed the light breakfast and deliscious coffee. Since our Spanish is rudimentary Johnny answered our questions clearly in English. With his directions we took the nearby bus into Alajuela to go to the bank, picked up supplies and had lunch in the cafeteria at Mas X Menos supermarket. All in all it was a great budget stay that met all our needs and (website hidden): Don't be confused by the name on the Airbnb ad like we were. The signs on the front of Johnny's place say "El Cacique" . This clean historic Costa Rican guesthouse is across the street from a park (with dramatic obelisks symbolizing a coffee bean to remind all that the land was once used for coffee farming. ) We had had a special first evening with some guitar playing and singing by another guest and sharing travel stories with others. We enjoyed having a private bath on this our 6th visit to CR where most budget places we stay have shared baths. Since an earlier reveiwer had trouble we are including Costa Rican Eco Shower 101 - turn the single handle on all the way then adjust it way back to slower flow for warmer water. There are three switch positions on the shower head. Not sure which one to choose? Ask Johnny, he's a cool dude, a great , very experienced host , and more than glad to help answer questions and arrange onward transport. Thanks Johnny. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your comfortable inn.
Our stay at the hostel generally met our needs. The beds were comfortable, the fan worked well, there were fresh towels and bedding, and we felt very safe. Also, it is incredibly close to the airport which was great (we walked there). Johnny introduced himself and offered assistance should we need.
The downside - There were several bugs crawling in the room. The water temperature only reached luke warm/cool the night we arrived, which was unfortunate because we desperately wanted a hot shower from the day's exhausted activities. We never contacted Johnny about it, so I don't know if that's always the case with the water or not. Additionally, the kitchen was uninviting (leaves and dirt on the floor, smelled a bit unfresh). The breakfast that was included was 2 bunches of bananas lying on the counter.
I would recommend this hostel for very low-maintenance people or for the night before one's departure to the airport.
Close to the airport was very convenient to begin our travels in Costa Rica. Clean, basic accommodations.
The online communication from the host was very good. Clear directions, reservation confirmed, etc. When taxi dropped me off, I was shocked to see the condition of the building, the neighborhood and the room, since it did not look at all like the pictures. the toilet did not flush, and the bathroom was not clean. there was dust on the window slats. Johnny did call a taxi for an early morning trip to the airport, who arrived promptly. ALthough it's proximity to the airport is accurate, I can not recommend this lodging to a person for whom cleanliness is an issue, and feel the pictures displayed on Air B & B should be verified.
I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. Not only is this hostel unsafe to walk to from the airport (because of the traffic on the freeway,) it is also located in a very sketchy area. The day we were scheduled to arrive at Johnny's place we contacted him to see if a package had been dropped off for us. I had previously contacted him to see if it would be ok if a friends dropped off a package for us and he assured me that it wouldn't be a problem. I called about 15 minutes before arriving he told us that the package had not arrived but when we walked in the door he handed us the package without any explanation as to why he lied. He wasn't welcoming and actually scared me a little. I tried to be positive but when I went down to ask about breakfast he responded, "It's on your itinerary." The room was clean but the shower was more than dangerous. The shower head has exposed high voltage wires. This place is unsafe in more ways than one. I would recommend paying $5 dollars more for a nicer, safer place. This is your warning!
This people were acting WEIRD since they arrived.
The instructions are pretty clear on how to get to my place &
how it is locally known. I´m sure they didn´t take time to read it.
Definitely NOT my type of guests.
Why would I lie about your pictures?
Like a give a rat´s tail...
The GAY photographer showed up right after your last call.
If you bring "THAT ATTITUDE" to me you´re just going to get it right back!
Have fun playing in the mud...
