Your Cosy Private Ubud Loft

Bed & Breakfast - Private room · Jalan Tirta Tawar, Ubud, Bali 80571, Indonesia

The Space

Think of this as staying over at your friend's place. You have your own private loft bedroom, but you are part of the household, in a peaceful "open plan" tropical atmosphere and with company when you feel like it.

Ibu Jen is our semi-permanent guest, so you will share the sunset-view bathroom, kitchen, living and dining spaces - all part of a spacious open plan apartment, just ten minutes from central Ubud.

You have a separate bedroom, containing only a "wide single" or cosy-for-two sized bed, with a draped mosquito netting around it for privacy and a lovely view overlooking the palm trees towards the nearby temple.

Your Private Loft is available for one person or a couple, (short term, 3 days minimum, usually one week maximum but talk to us because we've had 2 people stay for more than a month).

Next door one one side is a virgin bamboo field with animals grazing and a dirt path to the temple, behind is a Balinese village, with all the sounds of local living.

The house is recycled - a traditionally shaped Indonesian "joglo" home, transported from Java and adapted to western use. It is a comfortable one bedroom home, with all of the owner's individual style and nick-nacks. Western-style living, tucked away in a traditional Balinese village and surrounded by lush tropical gardens.

The home includes a well equipped, open plan kitchen that you can share; bathroom with hot bath, shower and garden/ sunset view; spacious entertaining/ dance/ yoga/ space, completely open to the view of palm trees and tropical garden on two sides; and a work desk that you can't work at, because the view is too lovely.

Don't be surprised ... because this is OPEN plan living, you will hear the sounds from the village - roosters, dogs, motorbikes, crickets, geckos, children at play. Ibu Jen is completely used to the late night dog discussion and the early morning rooster challenge; you can use ear plugs if you like, lol.

The real treat is that you often hear the sound of traditional Balinese music/ instruments, from master musicians practising for performances in the nearby Balinese temple.

NEIGHBOURS: There's more garden and field around you than people.

Downstairs is a self-contained rental apartment (see Space to Breathe on People often stay for a month or more, especially when on retreat or a yoga teacher training.

You are a bamboo plantation away from the local Balinese village on one side and the actual "next-door" neighbours - a Swedish/ Bali couple with two lovely kids.

Keep Monday night free! All the men of the local village perform a spectacular Kecak (Monkey) dance at the temple next door.

There's an inexpensive laundry 100 meters south, an ashram with regular yoga and meditation classes, 250 meters to the north, and two delicious and cheap local warungs (cafes) even closer.

You are on the outskirts of Bali’s “yoga centre”, the town of Ubud, just 10 minutes by car or motor bike - or 30 minutes on a bicycle if you are fit - from many top quality restaurants, galleries and museums, places to dance and sing, the famous Monkey Forest, traditional healers and much more.

And then less than 30 minutes from whitewater rafting, Bali's famous rice terraces, Safari Adventure Park, Bali Bird Park, Bali Elephant park, Pranoto's famous Life Drawing Classes, Goa Gajah (Elephant Caves) and many inspiring Hindu temples.

CONCIERGE SERVICE: Ibu Jen has lived in Bali for eight years (and been visiting for over 20) so she is happy to share her experiences and suggestions with you. If you'd like our/her professional help to arrange your schedule and make bookings, we'll charge a reasonable concierge fee for that service.

DRIVERS: We have local friends who are professional guides, available to take you on a tour including any of these; they speak good English, they will go at your pace, and take you places you'd never find on your own. These are hard-working village men, so sometimes they are committed to temple or community events, but otherwise they are happy to escort you around the island.

Unless you already have a car and driver organised, WE DO NOT recommend you book a taxi from the airport or other part of the island.

We will book one of these Ubud drivers for you - someone who we trust, who knows where we live and will bring you straight to the door. If you choose NOT to do this, we will NOT come out to find you on a motor bike, when your cheaper airport taxi driver drops you off miles away, leaving you next to a ricefield in the rain. (Sorry but this has happened too many times to be polite about any more :-)

Our guys are also a great help when you want to do any touring or site seeing around Ubud, as opposed to the airport taxi guy who you'll never see again.

No public bus; car and motor scooter cheap and simple to rent (owner happy to organise) One of our favorite local driver/ tour guides lives very close so as well as day trips, he is available for rides in and out of Ubud, at 20,000rp one way on a motor bike, or 50,000 one way in his car.

RENT INCLUDES: Breakfast, cleaner 2 mornings/ week, gardener).

WIFI: Reasonable Bali-speed wifi connection available.

Home-cooked dinner - both Balinese and western cuisine - can be pre-ordered in the morning from ibu Gusti.

Other Things to Note

Please be aware that power blackouts happen on a regular basis in Bali, due to the rapid development. If power goes out, it is usually on again in a few hours, but in rare instances, may be off overnight. The wifi will be unavailable if the power goes out.

Check In
  • Can't believe that time flies. I stayed in Jen's house for 5 nights. Everything was fresh and new to me. It's far from the center of Ubud? Not far for me! I love village Junjungan and green jungle outside the window. It's kind of like a hidden oasis. I woke up every morning just as the sun peeked on the island. The noisy cocks and dogs didn't bother me at all. It's nature!! I also had a wonderful time with a yoga teacher from India. We both love the serenity in the jungle. She was a good roommate. How fortunate it is to be able to enjoy driving by the rice field with sunlight shinning upon you. Thankful for an incredibly inspirational week here in Ubud.

  • It was cozy in Jen´s house, I felt safe and surrounded by nature.

  • This is a place for traditional Balinese village style living. Definitely not for someone looking for a luxurious stay.
But if you're up for it, it is a wonderful experience.
The thing I liked most about it was the exposure to various wildlife. I saw up close at least 3 different types of unique moths, 4 strange insect creatures that I'd never seen before, woke up to the sound of roosters every morning, and got the chance to pick out the different sounds of various insects. Absolutely worthwhile of you love nature
Its quite a distance from Central Ubud but no problem if you rent a scooter which will cost you about 40,000 a day.
Jen was not around whilst I was there but Gusti and her husband Komang took care of me and they are the best in the world!
All in all, an amazing stay

I'm sorry I missed you this time Grace. Thanks for the lovely review!

  • I absolutely loved staying in Jen's beautiful home!!! It was so nice being away from the loud, chaotic noises of Ubud. The roosters were the only noise near the house, but I got used to that. It was so much better than the nerve wracking motor bike engines and people's voices of central Ubud. I just needed a motor bike (or great walking shoes) to get to town. Jen was out of town during my stay, but Gusti and her husband, Komang, took such great care of me!! Gusti was very sweet and helpful. She came every morning and prepared fresh coffee, tea, and fruit. She also made the most amazing omelettes I have ever had!! Gusti did a great job tidying up as well. Also, Komang became my buddy! He was such a life saver with a very kind heart. He helped me rent a motor bike, book trips, and helped me do anything I needed! I highly suggest whoever stays here to ask for Komang's assistance with booking activities, and please tip Gusti and Komang! The Balinese make such little money to survive, and the tourist dollar stretches very far!

The only complaint I have is the loft being much smaller than I thought. However, I ended up staying downstairs anyway since Jen was gone. Jen was very helpful and accommodating through cell phone communication. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND STAYING HERE!!! I hope to come back! Thank you to Jen, Gusti, and Komang!

  • If what you are looking for is a resort-like experience with a nice refreshing pool, sipping cocktails all day while are not the right person for this place! If you are after something authentic, with a personality and a soul, this is definitely it! Really enjoyed the casual and community feel I got from staying at Jen's, I think it suits single travellers very well. Also loved the "village setting", it gave me a more genuine view of Ubud and its nearby area. I was prepared to broken sleep due to the immense noise coming from the roosters, so it didn't bothered me, I took it as a "local" experience. Would love to go back.

    Response from Jen And Gusti:

Wow great review thanks! But would you mind either toning down the "rooster" part of it, or mentioning that 30 of the 34 roosters are moving to another home this coming weekend! Yippeee.

  • A hidden gem in the heart of Junjungan Village of Ubud! The place is full of character and Jen was a warm, super helpful and AWESOME host!

  • I stayed for a week at Jennifer's wonderful house.
I loved to stay there, it really felt like home!
I was there for work, but in my free time I enjoyed to explore beautiful Bali. Jennifer and her friend took me an another girl who was staying there too, on a nice trip around Bali. So nice of Jennifer. The best thing about this place is that you also meet other great people who are staying there. When I was there one girl from San Francisco and two girls from Germany were there. It was so nice to do fun things together. Also the driver Kung is awesome. He can pick you up from the airport and he will be there for you when you need him. He's a very nice and very funny guy and he will drive you around at any time of the day! This place is definitely worth to stay : ) Come over and enjoy your time here!

Your host Jen is a traveling Aussie. She lives mostly in Bali, which has part of her heart; another part is in West Africa, another part in New Zealand, where she was born, and all of it where her two sons and her sisters are. It's great that she's around to help with ideas for great travel around Indonesia. Like the house manager ibu Gusti, Jen a good cook and a great host. She's recently finished a 15 month stint as an Australian Volunteer International in Development (AVID) volunteer, helping an Indonesian non-profit expand one youth centre here in Bali, and set up another one in post-tsunami Aceh, at the western end of the country. Now she is in the Philippines, helping there after the horrific super-typhoon. She's an extrovert (that is, she gets her energy from interactions with the outside world, not from her private space) and a people person. She believes a stranger is a friend she hasn't met yet. She loves dancing, especially partner dancing - Swing, Modern Jive and Rock n Roll for preference ( Salsa if the others aren't available), and more recently African dancing. She loves fantasy/ sci fi too, though there's not much time left for reading with so many choices of good nightlife in Ubud. Jen believes that her life's purpose is to be a Prosperity Catalyst.
