About this listing
A secluded getaway right in the middle of central Rockridge, surrounded by lush greenery and woods. This tinyhouse offers a cozy stay for two in a low-impact space on a gorgeous, larger property.
Stylish tinyhouse/cottage with everything two people need for a stay in lovely Rockridge, Oakland. A tiny kitchen, bathroom and livingroom space with an airy loft for sleeping, all situated in the back of a unique and lush property.
The comfortable queen bed sits on the loft, and offers a wonderful view of lush greenery in all directions. The steps down to the living area double as drawers for storage or clothing.
The kitchen has a small fridge and a two-burner cook-stove where simple meals can be cooked. Pots, pans, utensils, china and silverware are all there, you just bring the food. There's a french press for coffee-making.
If you don't feel like cooking at all, there are lots and lots of restaurants in the heart of both Rockridge and Temescal districts, both of which are a mere 5 minute walk from the house.
The bathrooom has a nice, bright shower and a composting toilet, as well as towels, hairdryer, and basic toiletries like shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. All soaps supplied are biodegradable and phosphate and paraben free.
The house is built with reclaimed and eco-friendly materials for a healthy indoor climate and a light impact on the environment. The water from the shower and sink goes out to irrigate plants in the yard, and the bathroom has a composting toilet. The composting toilet may produce more odors than a regular flushing toilet.
We are 2 blocks away from BART (San Francisco metro) and downtown Rockridge with anything you could ever want including grocery stores, coffeeshops, great restaurants, shops, farmer's market on Sundays and much much more. The BART takes about 15-20 minutes to down town San Francisco, and driving there is just as fast without traffic.
Downtown Oakland is two BART stops away, and downtown Berkeley is a nice walk or a quick bikeride (or BART of course).
We have plenty of parking in our driveway and street parking is free as well.
The tinyhouse is available for rent on its own or as part of a larger rental with the full property and main house. See https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/543315 for the main house listing, and for more pictures of the yard and garden.
Guests will have full, private access to the tinyhouse and the deck and patio surrounding it.
We're happy to share our yard and garden if we are home, but if we have other renters in the main house, then the main yard, main patio, pizza oven and bbq comes with their booking and is not available for tinyhouse guests.
Interaction with Guests
As much or as little as you want. We're happy to provide tips and recommendations for the neighborhood, or help with anything you may need during your stay.
Rockridge is one of the best neighborhoods in Oakland. It has a slew of local shops and markets including vegetable markets, a butcher, wine shops, bakeries, cheese shops, coffee shops and ice cream places, and several grocery stores including Trader Joe's and a brand new Safeway. There are lots of amazing restaurants and a wonderful Sunday farmer's market just a couple blocks from the house.
BART, the San Francisco Bay metro-system, is two blocks from the house and there are Transbay buses going in to San Francisco right outside our driveway.
Parking is included in a private driveway.
Getting to and from the airports (OAK and SFO) is really easy, either by BART or by car. The on-ramp to the freeway is half a block down the street so it's generally easy to get around.
Other Things to Note
The composting toilet may produce more odor than a regular flush toilet. If you are very skeptical of this, it's probably not for you.
Plan to bring the majority of your own food and drinks, but feel free to take advantage of anything that is in the fridge or on the counter that you might need. Seasonal vegetables are available in the garden and you are welcome to help yourself!
No specific house-rules other than no smoking inside and being nice and courteous to people around here! The place is too small to try and throw a party, so that rule is out...
We had such a pleasant time in Marianne's Tiny House. The space was perfect for us ( 2) and the shower was nice & warm. The house was very clean and the fact that it's Eco friendly is great! We cannot get over how comfortable the bed and pillows were! I would definitely stay again when visiting SF. The local area offers so much in dinning and for exploration we simply ran out of time.
The tiny house is awesome. I was in town for a few days and it was perfect. Great location, very close to restaurants, Trader Joes, and the BART. Very peaceful and serene. Would definitely like to stay here again the next time I am in town.
Enjoyable experience in a tiny house. Perfect for solo traveler or couple. Great Oakland neighborhood, with BART station, groceries, shopping and ice cream just a few blocks away. Nice garden, too. Try the tiny house for yourself, and it may spoil you. Now I want to live in one. Ingenious design.
Marianne's cozy ecohouse made our weekend stay just what we we're hoping! With easy access to downtown Rockridge, Berkeley and Temescal, the location couldn't have been better for the areas we wanted to check out. It was a breeze to stroll over to amazing places to eat and grab a drink, like Wood Tavern, La Farine, Cole's and the Temescal Farmer's Market. We walked to nearly all the places we needed to get to! Marianne was very communicative during through the entire process and a kind, laid-back host. The eco-house was clean, comfy, private and perfect for two. We loved their green backyard full with garden beds, spots for reading and fun DIY character. When we venture to the east bay again, we'll be staying here.
Marianne and Sam's Oakland residence was amazing and they were more than a pleasure to work with in organizing our stay. A friend and I stayed in the cottage out back and, despite how small it looks from the outside, it was incredibly comfortable. Tucked away from the street in a beautiful green yard, the house is the perfect, cozy space for a stay in the Bay Area. The sizable green yard is a destination alone; with a hammock strung between two trees, an outdoor oven, and plenty of patio and deck to lounge around on, I could have spent ample time enjoying the space. Once we got over the charm of the yard, the first thing we noticed about the accommodation was the aesthetic appeal of the inside of the cottage. Whether or not you're passionate about sustainability, the reclaimed and sustainable materials are used in a way that is extremely tasteful and gives the house a simple elegance.
The cottage has everything you could need and was extremely well kept and clean. We weren't exactly sure what to expect from the compostable toilet but it was extremely sanitary, odorless and easy to use. The sleeping arrangements - something that's always important, whether you're staying somewhere for night or month - were incredibly comfortable. Located in a loft above the living area, the bed itself was quite comfortable and the ceiling was high enough that it was easy to get in and out of.
When we did feel like venturing out, it was an easy walk to many of the restaurants and bars in the Temescal/Rockridge area which greatly added to the appeal of the location. This accommodation had so much charm it was hard not to feel at home and comfortable immediately. I would highly recommend staying here and look forward to doing so again.

About the Host, Marianne
I grew up in Norway, but moved to California in 2007 for grad school and have stayed here since. I live a pretty standard Bay Area life working in the sustainability industry, and taking advantage of the great outdoors around here. Love going on trips to new places, no matter how near or far away. My husband, Sam, and I just returned from a 15-month trip around the world and we missed hosting while we were gone, so we're excited to be back into it. Getting to host people and help them experience the true Northern California and all we have to offer here is really fun for us, and we would love to help make sure your trip here is great!
