*Please respond with Codeword for a more favorable response* This is a gorgeous 3 bedroom 2 bath Villa located steps from the ferry dock. A wide open floorplan with ocean views. A large rooftop patio offers stunning views of the Caribbean.
Please read the entire listing before booking. Thanks! I have hidden a codeword in the listing. If you respond with my code word I will know you have read the entire description. I know its annoying, but I've had too many problems with people not reading all the information, which leads to problems when they arrive.
This villa is gorgeous, the large rooftop patio offers great views of the Caribbean ocean.
2 master suites, as well as a sleeping nook can accommodate 6 people comfortably.
The dining room opens up onto another patio over looking the Caribbean ocean.
The kitchen is large and open, surrounded by windows so that you can always catch a glimpse of the sparkling sea.
The house is in the city, so throughout the day you can hear local music from the ferry. Expect normal city noise. It is still a very peaceful and calm property.
Please note that the bedrooms do not have doors. This is a attempt to keep air flowing through the house and temperatures cooler. We have sewn curtains for privacy.
There are a variety of excellent restaurants within walking distance, as well as grocery stores and other fun shopping.
A rental car is necessary to reach all the best beaches in Vieques. The majority of the best beaches are in the Vieques National Wildlife refuge, which has terrible roads and requires a Jeep to access. There is no public transportation and Taxi's will not drive to these beaches. It is generally accepted that a car is necessary to enjoy everything Vieques has to offer.
We provide a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Beach Beater for a additional $55/night for the exclusive use of our Villa Indigo Guests. The Jeep is not in pristine condition, it's a island car, so expect dents, scratches and other cosmetic imperfections. It does run perfectly and is more than adequate for the roads and beaches of Vieques.
If you are staying in Vieques longer than your stay at Villa Indigo we are able to let you keep the Jeep. You will have to put down a $250 security deposit on the car when you leave Villa Indigo.
The Jeep will be ready and waiting for you at the house when you check in. Payment for the rental car can be made via PayPal with your credit card.
Please note that cars rented on the main island are not permitted on the Ferry.
IMPORTANT!: The car rents on a nightly basis, just like the house. We ask that if you take advantage of our cars, you rent for your entire stay. That way, the car is ready and waiting for you when you check in, and you have it until you check out. It's more convenient than having to stop at the rental car office, (Codeword: Sofrito!) and it will be waiting for you at the house when you arrive.
Gas: It is VERY important that you return the car with the same amount of gas recieved. Every guest seems to think it's ok to just leave us cash and let us fill it for them. This is not OK and inconsiderate for both us and the next guest who arrives. The fee for not returning the car with the same amount of gas you received it with is $30 + the cost of gas, billed at $15 per 1/4 tank or less.
Check in for house and car is 3pm
Check Out for house and car is 11am.
This is flexible, depending on when the guests before you leave, and the guests after you arrive, and we do our best to accommodate everyone. When planning your trip please don't expect the house to be ready until 3 PM, and expect to return the car and house keys by 11AM.
I do want to take this time to warn you about the ferry. It is a absolute mess and incredibly un-reliable. It never runs on time, you have to wait hours for a ticket, and they often cancel ferry runs without any warning. Just yesterday I had a family with 2 small children wait 6 hours of their precious vacation time to get on a ferry. I strongly suggest you look into flying. There are 3 airports, Ceiba is right across the channel on the main island. Flights to Vieques are $35 each way. Isla Grande is the domestic airport in San Juan and flights are $75 each way. San Juan International is the big main airport, flights from here run between $90 and $120. since you are likely flying into this airport, flights from here are most convenient. The other 2 airports only make sense if you are visiting other parts of Puerto Rico before coming to Vieques. The 3 airlines that run these routes are Cape Air, Vieques Air Link and Air Flamenco. All of them have online booking.
If you plan on taking the ferry I cannot pick you up or personally check you in if you arrive past 6:30 PM. I will leave you directions to the house, and hide a key. I will personally check in with you the next morning. Keep this in mind if you plan for the 4 PM ferry; Chances are you will leave and arrive late.
Please provide me with your arrival and departure times a week in advance. I need to schedule your arrival with my house keepers.
A Note on Bugs. Welcome to the tropics! We have bugs here. Big Ones. Every property on this island, even the W, will have bugs. I'm sorry if you aren't used to them, but it's part of island living and short of A-bombing the property with toxic pesticides, there is nothing that can be done.
A/C: We do not have Air Conditioning in this house. Electricity in Puerto Rico is very expensive ($280 a month on this property!) , Any house that offers A/C will have a higher nightly rate. This house is fully screened, but the windows are open, A/C is not possible. We want to offer our guests budget accommodation, so in a attempt to keep costs down, we do not offer A/C. We do have ceiling fans and box fans for you to use.
A note on Beach Umbrella's : We no longer offer beach umbrellas. Vieques can be windy, and our guests have repeatedly been breaking the beach umbrellas we keep buying for the house. We've gone through at least 15 in the last 6 months. If you need a beach umbrella they are sold at the Black Beards, the grocery store and many other shops for around $30. I also highly recommend Palm Trees for shade :)
Cancellation policy: We maintain a strict cancellation policy. This once again has to do with our budget pricing, if you cancel at the last minute, then it is un-likely the house will re-book. We as hosts will lose the income, and we won't be able to offer this rate for all of our guests. I'm terribly sorry, but I absolutely cannot offer any refunds on any last minute cancellations. Please understand this policy when you book. When booking, you agree to this cancellation policy and I cannot make any exceptions.
Problems: If you have any problems with anything, I will do my best to fix it as soon as humanly possible. Vieques runs a little slower than the rest of the world. Nothing is going to happen on a Sunday. If you email me at 11PM saying you're having a problem with the toilet, I won't be able to fix it until the morning. It is very important that you call me as soon as any problem arises.
Guests have access to off street parking for one vehicle and use of the rooftop patio.
Interaction with Guests
Guests can expect to be greeted and oriented to the island upon check-in and have text message communication for any concerns and questions.
Isabel II has access to the ferry which services Vieques from the main island of Puerto Rico. Within walking distance are several restaurants, grocery and mini-markets, scenic views from the Punta Mulas Lighthouse and the Conde de Mirasol Fort, and sports outfitters and souvenir shopping.
Please provide us with the codeword to confirm you have read the entire listing. By Booking Villa Indigo, you acknowledge that you have read and understand the listing and you have reviewed all the images in our gallery.
Guests must provide us with their arrival times 1 week in advance.
I felt very at home. The decoration and space is amazing. Amazing rooftop patio!!!!!!! Also location is excellent becuse of distance to ferry, transportation and places to eat!
The house is just as described, nothing more or less. It perfectly suited our needs and had more amenities than expected. It is a perfect location next to the ferry, and with the jeep rental, very easy to get anywhere on the island. Best part is the rooftop sun deck.
This was hands down the best AirBnb experience that I've ever had! Julian's place is absolutely stunning! My jaw dropped the moment I walked in the door as I felt so lucky to have found a hidden gem! The house is beautiful and makes you feel right at home. It's extremely convenient being just seconds from the ferry. Killer upper deck to watch the sunset, convenient to places to eat, I could go on and on and on! I can't recommend this place enough if you're going to Vieques!
Vieques is a simple and satisfying island experience and we were happy to have Jillian's house as our home base. Everything you need is close by and you're surrounded by nature. Watching the sunset from the roof or balcony of the house is spectacular!! The house is in a lovely location which is in walking distance to restaurants/bars and the ferry. Everything in Vieques is quick to get to so you can't really go wrong with this location.
A note on noise: I often sleep with ear plugs because I'm super sensitive to sounds so the local town noise didn't bother me that much but throughout our stay sometimes in the later part of the evening cars would drive by playing really loud music. I'd say expect to hear that and some dogs barking nearby and roosters crowing at random times in the night. But it's really not that bad.
We used the kitchen a couple of times for breakfast and dinner and it had everything we needed cookware-wise but we brought/bought some seasonings. There were lots of towels for bathing and beach-going, a cooler and beach chairs.
Being able to rent Jillian's jeep is one of the amazing perks of this place (another being that sunset)! It's so convenient and we really appreciate being able to (somewhat) blend in with the locals. If you plan on going to any of the beaches in the wildlife refuge then you need a vehicle and the jeep was perfect for that!
This was our second time on Vieques and both times we rented with Jillian. The first time was at Casa Elefante and this time at Villa Indigo. Both times were a great experience. Jillian was very attentive and always quick to respond to our questions.
We'd love to stay at her place again!
Jill's apartment was perfect! Plenty of beds for a large group plus a rooftop patio great for watching the sunset. The apartment was clean and Jill was especially accommodating towards our check in. The jeep that came with the apartment was great for getting around the island. The apartment was located in a great spot for walking to restaurants.
Vieques is an amazing little island. We took Vieques airlink over to the island since we heard the ferry was a nightmare! We took a cab from the airport to Jillians home which was 10 minutes away (right by ferry terminal). If you are looking for island living, this is the place to stay in. We knew there would be no A/C so we were ready for it. Its very breezy when all the windows are open. We met with her housekeeper who told us all the best beaches to hit up. The jeep that Jillian has is not new so dont expect a 2015 Wrangler, the check engine light was on during our stay but she said that was normal also we had to stop by a tire shop since her left rear tire was low (I saw this in previous reviews as well). It was scary for me to drive at first but then I got the hang of it. We enjoyed out stay.
I am so glad you enjoyed Villa Indigo and Vieques. It's a truly special place.
I thought I would address the Jeep issue. From day one of the booking process I have made clear that i offer a beach Jeep. In fact I make sure you provide me with a codeword prior to booking so that I know you understand this. You booked knowing you would get a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, so I don't know how you possibly expected a 2015 Wrangler. If you want a 2015 wrangler I am happy to direct you to the appropriate vendor. The O2 sensor in this Jeep does throw the check engine light on occasion, but this is part of driving a privately rented Beach Jeep on a remote tropical island. I did offer to fill the tire with air myself, but you opted to handle it yourself.
Overall we were quite happy with Villa Indigo. The apartment is literally two minutes from the ferry dock, which is very convenient. It was clean and airy and definitely an authentic experience, right down to the cars driving by our windows at 7:00 AM until 11:00 PM with their stereos blaring music. But again, we didn't mind. There were a few minor problems. First, the bathroom attached to the middle bedroom seemed to emit a funky sewage odor. However, the apartment still had three toilets, so that wasn't an insurmountable problem. Second, my mother encountered some problem with the washing machine where it wouldn't spin dry the clothes. She had to wring them out by hand and then put them in the dryer. It could have been user error since I had no problems with it. Finally, and most importantly, the jeep we rented was dicey. The front headlights didn't work, so we had to drive around with the high beams on. That seems a bit dangerous, especially since we had our five-year-old and two-year-old in the car. Also, the "check engine" light was on during our entire stay which made me think it was going to poop out at any minute. The rear passenger-side tire was also in need of air. We rented a car from Avis on the main island for about the same daily rate, but it was in MUCH better condition. Maybe $55/day for a jeep in poor condition is not a good price. Otherwise, everything else was great!
Hi Mary -
Im sorry you had problems and I'll do my best to address all of them. I'm certain the washing machine was a user error because we do all our laundry for every turnover without any problems and I've never had a complaint from guests about this.
As for the Jeep, our listing is very clear that we rent out 2001 Beach Jeeps. They aren't perfect, they all have quirks, but they're great for our rough roads and beaches. By asking for a codeword and communicating through the booking process we strive to make sure our guests understand this BEFORE they make any payments. I'm not sure where you missed all of this in the booking process since I have numerous emails from you. When you checked in we made you aware of the check engine light and our puerto rican proverb "if the check engine light isn't on, theres a problem" Thats right, the humidity and salty air messes with O2 sensors on older cars and it throws off the check engine light.
As for the headlights, we also told you when you checked in that on this particular Jeep the regular headlight are turned on pushing on the highbeam. It's a wiring issue in a a older island Jeep. Maybe you weren't paying attention, or maybe this information was relayed to another member of your group. I'm not sure, but I'm confident that all these little quirks were addressed so that you wouldn't have to worry.
The cheapest rental car on Vieques from a rental company starts at $64 and those are ALWAYS sold out. We try to make these Jeep exclusively available to our guests so that they don't have to deal with finding a available car, deposits and holds on your credit card. I give every guest the option to rent elsewhere because I know these beach Jeeps aren't for everyone.

My husband and I are lucky enough to make our living in the beautiful Vieques, Puerto Rico.
We run our own photography company here on the island, EP Anderson Photography. I also work for the W Retreat and Spa and Elliott is a freelance photographer for a company back in the states.
