Our home is clean, quiet, immersed in nature, 10 minutes to historic downtown Flagstaff, has most amenities needed by Grand Canyon travelers, and provides easy access to outdoor activities. We live onsite and are available to help our guests feel comfortable and safe during their stay. We have extensive knowledge of the area as we are guides and outdoor enthusiasts. We run a small, sustainability, education center onsite that works with students of all ages and donates produce to our community.

The space
Are you planning on visiting the Grand Canyon, driving on Rte 66, or exploring the Arizona Snowbowl? Are you looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city and spend time immersed in nature? Or maybe you enjoy learning about sustainable agriculture? If so, a couple nights at the Flagstaff Grand Canyon Mountain Chalet is just what you need. We are located 7 miles (10 minutes) from historic downtown Flagstaff, 1.25 hours from the Grand Canyon, 15 minutes from Arizona Snowbowl, and 12 minutes from the Arizona Nordic Village (formerly the Nordic Center).

You will be staying in the recently renovated, lower level of our home, with your own entrance that gives you privacy and easy access to come and go as you please. You will park right in front of your door making unloading/loading easier so you have more time for exploring. There are two bedrooms (one room has a king bed and the other has two twin beds), your own kitchenette, dining area, and bathroom. There is a charcoal BBQ grill but you will need to provide your own charcoal and lighter fluid (subject to any Flagstaff summer fire restrictions). Enjoy sunsets and views of the mountains from your own private, outdoor sitting area with bistro table and chairs in order to get the peace and quiet you need to relax. We are kid friendly and have games, puzzles, toys, books, a highchair, next-to-the-bed cosleeper, and movies to help keep the family entertained. We have two kids of our own, Journey (2 years old) and Quest (5 months old). We all love spending as much time outdoors as possible (Quest is still learning :))

The surrounding neighborhood is quiet, comfortable, and rustic with gorgeous views of the peaks, the occasional herd of elk, deer, or a fly by from a red-tailed hawk. The Flagstaff Grand Canyon Mtn. Chalet has breathtaking views all around and is only a 5-minute walk to thousands of acres of National Forest land in the largest, contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest in the world. Within minutes from our home, you can enjoy hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, sledding, snowshoeing, or cross country skiing depending on the season.

Not sure where to go or what to see on your trip? No problem! We have an online guidebook, an entertainment binder full of local and statewide activities, maps, and menus, and, because we live upstairs, we are available and have lots of local knowledge to help you find fun and exciting adventures or places to eat while in town.

We also run a certified nonprofit onsite called The Flagstaff EcoRanch, which is dedicated to education and sustainable living. We experiment with water and energy conservation techniques, sustainable gardening, raising chickens and bees, and supporting our local community through food donations. During your stay, you may meet some of our college and high school classes, volunteers, or interns that have helped our nonprofit grow. Each year they volunteer over 2,000 hours of work, develop projects, and contribute to the Flagstaff community. Learn about our resource conservation techniques, share your own, get your hands dirty, or buy farm fresh eggs from our hens ($5/dozen)! We even have a self-guided tour you can use to learn about our nonprofit. Your stay helps fund the EcoRanch, the produce we donate to local shelters and nonprofits, and sustainable education for all who get involved. You can even spend some time volunteering in the field or greenhouse if you are interested. (Please note: we will be scaling back the EcoRanch activities in 2020 due to the arrival of our second babe in late 2019).

If you are looking for a weekend getaway, learning about sustainable living techniques, escaping the Phoenix heat, or need a rest stop while traveling through northern Arizona, the Flagstaff Grand Canyon Mtn. Chalet is the place for you!

WINTER INFORMATION: If you are staying with us between October and March, either 4WD or chains are required if there has been any snow because our driveway is on a hill and can get icy/slippery. Guests may need to park in the lower parking area and use the stairs up to the rental if this is the case. There are about 20 stairs. That being said, the weather can be unpredictable in the winter so you may not have any snow at all. We just want to warn you ahead of time because we have spent hours digging out cars for people unfamiliar with driving in snowy conditions. You can check with us about conditions before your arrival. There are lots of places to buy inexpensive chains in town, like gas stations and hardware stores, on your way out to our house if necessary.

Guest access
The Airbnb entrance is totally separate so guests have all the privacy they want. There are all kinds of wonderful activities and beautiful places to experience. Please see our online guidebook for our recommendations on activities, restaurants/bars, and sights to see or use the activity guidebook onsite when you arrive.

Other things to note
Please drive slow through the neighborhood to help keep dust from the dirt roads at a minimum. If you are staying with us between October and March, either 4WD or chains are required because part of our driveway gets very icy and slippery. You can check with us about conditions before your arrival. We are pet friendly but please let us know about them before your arrival. We charge an additional $10 cleaning fee per animal. If you plan to visit the Grand Canyon, dogs are allowed in the park but not on hiking trails below the rim. Please inquire about boarding options in Flagstaff or at the Grand Canyon if you need them.

Our neighborhood is unique because of the breathtaking views of the San Francisco peaks, its peacefulness, distance from the hustle and bustle of downtown, and proximity to national forest. It is also closer to the Grand Canyon than the rest of downtown, making catching a sunrise there even more feasible!

Hello and thanks for checking out our place! Our names are Jeff and Julie and if you stay with us, you’ll inevitably meet our dogs Nova and Foxy and our two sons, Journey and Quest. We look forward to having you stay with us and experiencing the beauty northern Arizona has to offer. Jeff is a professional educator originally from Chesterland, OH who currently works for Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ teaching biology and anatomy/physiology. In 2012 he traveled to South America to research hydroelectric energy, volunteer on sustainable farms, and worked as a guide in Patagonia, Chile. It was on this trip, that the foundational guidelines of the Flagstaff EcoRanch, a nonprofit sustainability education center, began to develop. Julie currently works for the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) as a Senior Program Coordinator. ITEP strengthens tribal capacity and sovereignty in environmental and natural resource management through culturally relevant education, research, partnerships and policy-based services. In her part time, Julie works as a backpacking guide for Wildland Trekking running multiday trips into the Grand Canyon. Together, using our passion for the outdoors and grassroots organization, we run the Flagstaff EcoRanch. It is our goal to further integrate the EcoRanch into the Flagstaff community in order to raise awareness about environmental and sustainable issues. We are highly motivated individuals who love being in the outdoors hiking and exploring. The money received through Airbnb has been what has funded the Flagstaff EcoRanch and support our student led projects like water catchment systems, greywater and irrigation projects, setting up a local CSA, or designing educational programs for local schools and organizations. Although we are taking a break from the EcoRanch this year, we will (of course) be growing as much of our own food as possible and continue to experiment with new systems for sustainable agriculture and indoor sustainability projects. We look forward to having you at our home/the Flagstaff EcoRanch and hope that while here, not only will you be able to immerse yourself in the natural beauty, but learn more about the Flagstaff community and our approach to sustainable living through the educational material that has been created by our interns. Have a great day and we hope to see you soon! Jeff and Julie
