About This Listing
A spacious 3-bedroom flat above the garage with an open-plan kitchen/living area, TV, fully equipped bathroom with bathtub and washing machine; sleeping 5-6 adults with extra cots available for toddlers and children. Access to extra shower and toilet on ground floor. Broadband. Enjoy the spectacular view of sunsets over Fardume Lake with the tower of medieval Hellvi church silhouetted in the distance from your dining area or on your private outdoor patio ideal for afternoon/evening relaxation.
Spring is coming to Rute and within a month there should be a multitude of blåsippor (hepatica) blooming in the park beside the ancient stone wall. The cranes return to Fardume around mid-March and their calls fill the evening skies.
Our country home has a fabulous panoramic view to the south and west overlooking fields and meadows towards Fardume Lake – a designated bird sanctuary. The nearby marshes, grass and hedgerows provide a perfect haven for a multitude of birds and other wildlife like foxes, hares and even the occasional roe deer. Thrill to the call of cranes and geese while enjoying the magnificent scenery.
The Gotlandic countryside will delight you with its spring flowers, lovely sunny summer days and wonderful autumn colours! Gotland is a botanist's dream come true with the succession of wild flowers beginning with Hepatica in April, wood anemones and cowslips, viper's bugloss and akelia to name a few, through over 35 species of orchids which bloom in May and June. Biking is a pleasure on Gotland with rolling fields and forest scenery, roadsides full of wildflowers and small fishing hamlets on stony coasts. I have a number of veteran cycles available for guests allowing you the chance to explore the local sights by bike. Avonlea lies near the coast (about 1 km to Valleviken with sandy shallow beach, harbour and restaurant), with grocery stores in Fårösund (15 km) bike rentals and ferry to Fårö, and Lärbro (10 km) that also has a superb greengrocer. There are many lovely sandy beaches in the neighbourhood as well as magnificent stonestack fields, cafés and a bakery.
I’ll be happy to tell you about all the interesting things you can see on walks/rides in the neighbourhood. I also offer trail riding for experienced riders. Explore the area on my lovely Connemara ponies or take a walk on the many forest trails or across the fields to the lake with bird-watching tower. It's a birdwatcher's paradise!

Welcome to the lovely serenity of Avonlea!
No smoking indoors.
We spent a week in late May at Avonlea, in the extremely spacious and comfortable apartment above the stable, and felt so fortunate to have such a lovely place to unwind and relax from the first (working) week on Gotland, and to have a host as accommodating, generous, and interesting as Luella. The flat itself has three nice sized bedrooms, and the master bedroom has a very comfy bed. The sitting room is large, and easy to do yoga in. The bathroom has a wonderful deep tub and plenty of hot water, a blessed luxury and aid to relaxation after a long day spent beach hiking and site seeing.
Sipping our morning coffee and tea while gazing out upon the grazing Miranda, Mackenzie, and Maguire (the resident Connemara horses) in the verdant pasture was a pleasure in itself. Add sweet Clover, the dog, and "Miss Hospitality", Viola the cat (world's most adorable feline!) and the place is an animal lover's dream. But Luella was the best part, a Gotlander by adoption (from her native Canada), she loves the island and its people and was so generous in sharing her insider knowledge, even spending an afternoon taking us around the other-worldly Furilden island, and to Ewys Museum, a fascinating folk museum of material culture, at which we met charming Ewys herself, both things we never would have done on our own. We feel truly blessed to have met Luella, stayed on her beautiful farm, and highly recommend Avonlea to any seeking the mix of natural setting, peace and quiet, and comfort we were rewarded with.
We had a very pleasant stay at Luella's. The house is great with beautiful landscape. Luella was a great host as well, saving us from a hungry lazy sunday morning with homemade delicious breakfast and interesting conversation, it was an awesome experience!
Highly recommended host!!!
We did not manage to stay at her beautiful home due to unforeseen circumstances (our ferry left early without us) but the manner in which she dealt with the entire situation was extremely helpful and professional. She even contacted the ferry company and airbnb for us. Her hosting skills are top-notch because she is the most helpful host by far who helped us with car rental and even offered to pick us up from the bus stop- thank you for accomodating to our requests and we are really sad that we couldn't stay at your home but we would love to next time!
Our stay was very nice. We had a good time and would gladly stay again. And thanks for arranging the bikes for us. Loved the sheep, horses, and the whole stay.
Avonlea is an amazing place. The view from the kitchen window and the patio outside is as taken from a movie. The apartment is close to the super friendly host Luella, yet private enough for having a relaxing and nice vacation. The sunset over Avonlea is just wonderful. If you want to charge your batteries or just want to get away from your daily stress, Avonlea is the place to visit. It's also a great spot to live in if you want to explore the northern part of Gotland including Faro with its beautiful sand beaches and raukar. If you or your kids like animals or want to get close to them it's a great place. My daughter loved the horses and Luella's cat but most of all Luella's dog Clover who seems to love children. The apartment is big and everything you need is there to find. I would love to come back again.
Luella is certainly an outstanding host and makes you feel at home at all times. She cares a lot about her guests and their well being, yet gives you all the privacy you want to have. We spent a beautiful week in her apartment that caters for everything you need and if it not Luella makes sure to help out. Probably I did not understand it well from the very beginning but the horse farm rather relates to guests who bring their own horse than the possibility to go on daily rides with Luella´s horses. My daughter Arianna enjoyed a beautiful ride on her favourite horse MacKenzie though. The location of the apartment seems remote at the beginning. Especially when you do not know Gotland at all like ourselves. After 1-2 days you realize that the location is really really good because in my view the northern part of Gotland, especially Farö, are amazingly beautiful and you can get to many spots easily. We did our daily tours on Luella´s bicycles. My only real criticism would be the non availability of wifi. But I suppose many guest do not want to stay connected with work etc while in beautiful Gotland. All in all, we already miss Avonlea now...and we only left yesterday !

I am a Canadian who's lived on the beautiful island of Gotland for the past 35 years. Alongside running my Bed and Breakfast I teach English as a home language and also work as a free-lance translator from Swedish to English. My passion is my Connemara ponies and horseback-riding. I am happy to offer assistance to foreign guests so that they can discover the treasures Gotland has on offer: historical, scenic and cultural.
