Walk to the beach in 5 minutes walking on dirt roads...Pura Vida !!!
Private small house-cabin half a mile from the beach. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living room-kitchen, outdoor area, private parking.
Perfect for a couple or 2 friends.
Right in the heart of the very small village of "Los Pargos", more known as Playa Negra, but isolated from noise by 2 rivulets and very tall trees.
5-10 minutes walking away from some shops and good restaurants
"World-class" surfing in the area, not only Playa negra, but many other spots.
Amazing wildlife, both on land and sea. turtles, colorful fish, whales, iguanas, monkees at the door, armadillos, tropical birds...
Playa Negra is a beautiful dark-sand beach famous in the surfing community for its right-hand barrel waves. The beach lays on the Pacific coast in Costa Rica's hot province of Guanacaste. Its location sits in close proximity to other popular beach breaks including "Little Hawaii" on Playa Avellanas, a short 10-minute drive away.
Playa Negra is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from the town of Liberia and its international airport. The drive from San Jose takes 4-5 hours crossing the Tempisque Bridge. Another option for travel from San Jose is to take a domestic flight to the popular tourist destination of Tamarindo, which is approximately a 35-minute drive away (perhaps a slightly longer drive in the rainy season.) Daily public buses leave from Santa Cruz, but a taxi or rental car is recommended. Santa Cruz also has the last available gas station in the area. After Santa Cruz, the road passes through Paraiso, a small community 4km from Playa Negra.
Quiet, very quiet... yet right in the center of town, 5 minute walking to everywhere. Monkeys don't know about it and might wake you up in the morning :)
2 small grocery shops right by, so that's fine.
Public transportation is not the best...and this is an understatement. Bus twice a day to Santa Cruz, and it will take forever. But if you want to experience the real Costa Rica jump on it ! Otherwise, walk, run, rent a bycicle, hitch a ride....
Other Things to Note
Water is scarce in all of Guanacaste (Northwestern Costa Rica) so please use moderately. specially in the months of March, April and June...
Take care of the property and enjoy as much as possible! Catch a good wave for me !
We stayed at Alfonso's for 25 days in December-January. As airbnb guests ourselves, we really think Alfonso's cabina is the perfect set up to enjoy Los Pargos and Playa Negra, the local way. 7 minutes walk to the beach (perfect for swimming in the waves at sandy beach or surfing), with an awesome and quiet neighbourhood and neighbours. The property manager on location lives next door. He was welcoming, generous, full of useful local knowledge, he hooked us up with the right people for the right activities and saved us a lot of research time. He found us great long (9') surfboards made by the best local shaper. We are beginner surfers and December-January was perfect to learn. There are 2 beaches literally side by side, one is good for learning and the other one to catch long waves as you get better.
The cabina itself has everything you need. Gas stove, well water, fridge, fans, cleaning products, etc. Costa Rica is full of life so expect a few ants, spiders, grasshoppers, etc. But Alfonso's as a lot less bugs around than a lot of other properties we saw there. From the Liberia airport to the cabina, worst case scenario, it costs a 80$ taxi (which you can negotiate). Other then that, ask Alfonso if he can hook you up with a local for a ride. Renting a car is a good option if you have the budget for it but we were able to manage without it.
We got the chance to have 2 bikes and we would really recommend them to enjoy the full potential of the area. You can probably rent bikes in a local shop or The property manager would certainly be able to find some to rent for you.
Overall 5 stars experience. Playa negra has the perfect mix between local Ticos and candian/american ex-pats. Easy going feeling with a few bars but really quiet passed midnight.
Our recommendations ; Horseback riding at Molly's (costa rica equestrian vacations), surf at playa negra(7minutes walk) and playa avellanas(10 minutes bike), Gina's bar(10 minutes walking), morning yoga at the peace retreat(7 minutes bike ride), barra honda caves(1h30 drive), Rincon de la vieja (45 minutes drive), Las tecas groceries( 10 minutes bike) and anything else that the property manager and great neighbours will recommend.
Great Cabina, clean and super close to Playa Negra and local markets
Even tho there is no a/c, the high powered ceiling fans in each room and the fact the the house is shaded by the trees made it very comfortable during this time of year. I will for sure be back.
WE LOVE STAYING HERE!!!! This was our second time to stay on Alfonso's property (although our first time in this cabin - we've stayed in the other house previously). Alfonso is extremely quick to answer any questions or needs that you have and has always been very friendly and helpful. His property manager, Juan, is the nicest and most trust-worthy guy you'll ever meet. He takes great care of the houses and was remarkably helpful during our stays. We will absolutely be back next year. By the way, it is crazy close to the beach... absolutely the best way to experience Costa Rica. Plus, this cabin gets great breeze!
My girlfriend and I found Alfonso through AirBnB and couldn't have been more glad we did. New to Costa Rica, and Central America as a whole, we were largely unsure of what we would find upon arrival. Thanks to Alfonso, and Juan (his housekeeper) we were able to secure an awesome beach cabin for an entire month.
The cabin has all the essentials: 2 beds, gas stove, refrigerator, wifi, and many ceiling fans, not to mention it's in a great neighborhood and very close to the beach. The particular development in Los Pargos, is essentially a gated/private community, with many nice homes. Our neighbor, Jeremy, renting Alfonso's other property was also very nice and very hospitable.
When the airlines lost my surfboards, Juan, Jeremy, and Alfonso couldn't have been more helpful. In fact, everything arrived the very next day!
Thanks again Alfonso! We hope to see you in the future!
