Read on for the detailed version ...

The room is at the end of a hallway where you can see Cary Street and The Byrd Theatre. The room has it's own corner gas-log fireplace for the winter weather and a Hunter fan for the warm weather (we do have AC, but the use of a fan helps reduce carbon emissions by not requiring the AC to work overtime). It has 4 windows so it's a bright and welcoming space. You'll have full access to the kitchen, but for added convenience we've got the room set up with a mini fridge and Keurig single-cup brewer that's stocked with a variety of teas and coffees, both caffeine-free and flavored (let us know if you'd like cider and/or hot chocolate).

Breakfast is self-serve so you can eat when it best suits your schedule. Along with the regular types of breakfast fare, we usually have on hand dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegetarian options. Please let us know if you have special dietary needs we haven't already mentioned. Also let us know if you have a preference for pillows: We have firm, middlin', and fluffy--as well as a memory foam pillow that's shaped to accommodate the curves and indentations of the head and neck. Let us know if you have a preference.

The house is a 1920s house that's recently been almost completely renovated but which has retained it's charm and many original details. We have a wonderful front porch that faces the south so on a pleasant winter's day it's nice to sit and soak up the sun and in the summer time, to sit in the shade and take a break. We have all the modern conveniences including central air, amazing radiant heat, high-speed internet, and a dishwasher. We have a fully-functioning office set up with printers, a scanner and other office accoutrement should you need access to any of it.

Cary Street is half a block away right out the back door! From our house we have a view of Byrd Theatre (a Virginia Historic Landmark and also on the National Register of Historic Places). It has $1.99 movies 365 days of the year; what's more is every Saturday there are live performances on the Wurlitzer organ--this is a MUST see! Ray Dolby (yes, the creator of the Dolby Sound system) visited the Byrd in 2004 and was so impressed with it, he donated a Dolby Sound system (installed 2006).

Immediately behind us on Cary Street is Don't Look Back--THE BEST tacos I have ever had--and the BEST PRICES ($3/taco!)! What's more, it's open until 2 am! Don't Look Back is casual, Secco's is also very nice with wonderful wines, local beers, hard cider, and a delicious menu of cheeses and fusion food. Capitol Coffee and Desserts has organic coffees, teas, sandwiches, treats, and vegan options (and free WiFi). Also, Coppola's deli (Best of Richmond) and the New York Deli (it's not really a deli, but a bar that's open 9 am till 2 am with a DJ after 10) are on either side of the theater so you won't be lacking for wonderful food and entertainment. If these options aren't appealing, there are tons of restaurants all up and down Cary Street: Galaxy Diner, Mom's Siam, Bev's Homemade Ice Cream, Thai Diner Too, Amici's, Can Can, Nacho Mamma's--WAY too many to list them all here. You may also enjoy the boutique, antique, and consignment shops in Carytown. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (has a cafe, a restaurant and free wi-fi) is a short four-block walk away, as is the most amazing park system and trails for walking/jogging/biking. Make sure you check out my guide book (see top RH corner in the listing).

We have a small, but friendly 10 pound pooch who is hypo-allergenic so he doesn't shed--at all! If you like dogs, you'll become best friends. If dogs are not your thing, once he comes to greet you and say hello, he'll wander off and amuse himself. He's usually very quiet, but if someone is walking up to the house he will bark to let you know, so he makes for a GREAT notification system!

As you can see from our reviews, we're hospitable and accommodating. Because I work from home, check-in/check-out is usually a breeze.

We look forward to hosting you! :-)

Interaction with Guests

The amount of interaction is up to our guests. Fiona works from home so is available to answer questions or assistance as needed. She does have plenty to keep her busy, though, so will continue on with her tasks unless you wish to interact with her. We will give you a house key--you are welcomed to come and go as you please and to interact as much as, or as little as, you need to make your stay productive and enjoyable.

The Neighborhood

Diversity! Convenience! Locally owned! A wide variety of restaurants and stores. Lots of local beers and Virginia cider on tap. The Byrd Theatre! Byrd (website hidden) Museum of Fine Arts. The Fan. VCU. + LOTS more.

Getting around

Within 1 block of city transportation. Another Two bus routes are within 1-2 blocks, and several others within 10 blocks. Check out their routes at rideGRTC (add the usual suffix). Additionally, the area where we live is mostly flat, so RVA is a great city to see the sights by bicycle (downtown is a bit more hilly). We have some bikes available for rent if you are interested in this option.

Other Things to Note

Welcoming hosts ready to help you as needed.

Quiet time is 10 pm - 7 am, but you are welcomed to come and go as you please.

We have a small, friendly 11lb toy poodle. You won't usually hear him unless someone approaches the house. He makes a GREAT watch dog.

If you're out late, we'll leave the light on for you.

PROCEEDS: Part of our proceeds provide much needed funds for 2 sets of sisters who live near the dump in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, so the girls can go to school. Our monthly contributions pay for their entire year's schooling, including supplies, uniforms, and shoes for school. Thank you!

For fun and interesting things to see and do, make sure you check out our guidebook in the upper right-hand corner of the listing!

PLEASE NOTE: Should you decide to book with us, about 24 hours after you check out Airbnb will send you an email asking you to review your stay with us. Airbnb will then notify us that you have reviewed us. Their email letting us know you have written your review is extremely helpful because we're uber busy and totally depend on this prompt to also leave a review for you!

  • My teenage son and I had a lovely time in Fiona's house and with her family. We stayed one night for a college tour, and the insights of Fiona and her family were incredibly valuable to us. Her entire family effortlessly made us feel at home (including the super cute tiny poodle), the room was perfect and exactly as described, and the neighborhood interesting and pleasant.

  • This was my first AirBnB experience and I apparently hit the jackpot for amazing hosts. I was in Richmond looking for an apartment but it was my first time there so I hadn't a clue how to proceed. Fiona not only provided an incredibly comfy room in a vibrant part of town, but gave me so much valuable advice for my apartment search, I couldn't have found one without her. I ended up finding a place close by, and you can bet I'm going to take that gal out for drinks when I'm all moved in; I consider her a new friend. Great room, fantastic host, excellent area, and the cutest little dog ever...can't say enough.

  • This is the perfect location to stay in Richmond. You are one block away from Cary Street and all that it has to offer. I stayed in the room and on the couch in Fiona's house and both were comfortable, cool, and had everything I needed. The real gem of this airbnb, though, are Fiona and her family. Everyone was so friendly and really made me feel at home and had advice, conversation, and warmth to share. Their poodle is also a wonderful little guy. If you stay here, you won't be disappointed. Comfortable bed, nice folks, and a great location. Can't ask for much more. The price is a bargain for all that you receive. Fiona even picked me up at the airport and let me rent her bike! These are both wonderful things you can't find at a hotel.

Our stay was short but very pleasant. We had little contact with our hosts, except when checking in, Fiona's husband, and when checking out, Fiona. The little conversation that we did partake in was lovely, to say the least. We always felt comfortable in their welcoming home. It is situated in a great location. We appreciate the great experience during our stay since it was our first time using Airbnb. We will definitely keep you guys in mind next time we return to Richmond, Virginia.

  • I'm glad I chose Fiona's as my place to stay in Richmond- she and her husband were welcoming and flexible regarding my arrival time, and the directions were spot-on! The Carytown neighborhood is fun & funky with lots of nightlife if you want it, but my stay was quiet and restful... The bed was VERY comfortable! I plan on staying there again in the future on my drives up to DC.

  • Loved my stay at this place! Fiona (& Family) were very welcoming, and the room was pretty, comfortable, well-equipped, and had 2 large windows. The location is fantastic if you're wanting the restaurants, shops, etc. of Carytown. The bathroom is recently renovated (well, actually still being renovated) with all new fixtures and decor. I was worried about parking but found a space across the street. I did not use the kitchen or have breakfast there, but it was well stocked and I was warmly invited to use the supplies. Great stay!

  • Fiona and her family are very hospitable. I felt the whole time as a member of the family. The room was clean and quite. Not so far from the nice Carry Road located. It was also nice to borrow the private bicycles. When I had questions all Family members gave me prompt an answer. Thank you for the wonderful time. Should I'm coming back again I'll knocking on your door.

  • I visited Richmond for the very first time and I had the most awesome stay possible! Fiona and her husband Keith were extremely nice and helpful! They picked me up from the bus station, and even gave me a short tour through the closest neighborhood with all the nice little shops and restaurants. I was even able to borrow a bike from them for the weekend to discover the Richmond area - the best way you can do it! And all the things they suggested were just great! I didn´t know much about Richmond before the weekend, but now I really love it! Go and see for yourself!

ABOUT FIONA: She's educated, well traveled, respectful and fun, and a transplant from Australia. Fiona has diverse tastes in music, food, and friends. She loves different cultures and connecting with people from all walks of life. She's just as happy dancing on a dirt floor in Mexico as she is dancing on a ballroom floor in Washington, DC (hmm ... maybe that's because she loves dancing! Fiona's credo: Who needs the gym when you can DANCE! Fiona likes to keep a balance: She's quite happy taking time to be with herself as well as spending time engaging with others. Her native language is English, but Fiona is fluent in Spanish. She's studied smatterings of other languages and also speaks conversational Persian (Farsi) and elementary Arabic (current language of study). Besides managing an online editing business, Fiona is multi-talented and knows how to sew, knit, crochet, paint (fine arts & walls), read music and play a smattering of instruments (but barely!), write, install a computer network, fix a computer, repair, replace a wax ring and the innards of a toilet, do other types of handyperson work around the house, change the oil and fuses in a car, diagnose (some) car problems, panel beat and spray paint a car, etc. Fiona has been described as a renaissance woman. Fiona has lived by the Pacific Ocean and in the the middle of the Sonoran Desert. She's lived in cities with populations in the millions and a one-horse town with a population of ... oh, around ... fewer than one hundred (yikes!). Fiona is open to adventures and new experiences. She is easy to get along with, and fun to travel with. Fiona is open to most lifestyles and understands there's not one exclusive formula for success--there are an infinite number of ways in which to successfully navigate the world, relationships, and life's ups and downs. ABOUT THE FAMILY: Keith is a born-and-raised Richmonder, so if there's anything you need to know about Richmond or the surrounding area, just ask! He's a hospitable host and enjoys Airbnb guests! The children: one is grown and is working on a graduate program in Dublin, Ireland. The other is in high school and very much enjoys meeting and engaging with the diverse mix of people we have the good fortune to host. FOR OUR AIRBNB GUESTS: Fiona & Family don't discriminate based on anything--not race, not religion, not language, not culture, not sex, not sexual orientation, not education, not socioeconomic status, not how much $ is in your bank account (as CPAs, both Fiona & Keith know appearances are NOT necessarily reality), nor your political leanings. We have friends from Central America who don't have more than a 6th grade education, and we have friends with multiple PhDs. We are equally comfortable conversing and engaging with both sets of friends--and everyone in between. Whatever your background, we look for the things we have in common through which we will connect and engage with you. PROVISO: Regardless of the genitalia, Fiona & Family have two deal breakers: 1) bullies--in every sense of the word--including those who intimidate, ostracize, belittle, or emotionally and/or physically bully others, and 2) people who are not respectful of others and/or the belongings of others, which is very closely related to bullying anyway: they're both disregarding the sovereignty of someone else and/or their belongings. We practice what we preach, so you can be assured that at all times we will be respectful of you, your space, your privacy, your wishes, and your possessions. We look forward to meeting you and, if the timing's right, to having whatever interesting conversation(s) you may have time to fit in to your stay with us! MOTTO 1: Remember to act spontaneously from time to time--it maintains the balance between order and chaos. MOTTO 2: Take calculated risks (versus dumb ones)--it keeps the adrenaline in your system, and the fun in your life! MOTTO 3: Educate yourself--it enlivens your brain: Our classroom is all around us, all the time--and it's FREE! MAY YOU FOREVER BE THE BENEVOLENT RULER OF YOUR DOMAIN! WISHING YOU SAFE TRAVELS AND AMAZING ADVENTURES!
