Carytown--you won't find a neighborhood like it--anywhere! Stay in a relaxing room in the coolest part of town that's close to everything, and leave the rest to us. We love hosting our amazing Airbnb guests. ¡Bienvenido! Accueil! Wilkommen! Hun yaow!
Please note: Our home is an in-progress work of art lovingly being improved and upgraded for your comfort and enjoyment. Please pardon the dust/signs of upgrade projects. Thanks!
Many thanks for taking the time to read the listing details below.
This is a listing for a room in our home (so, no front desk clerk on duty, buggerit ... ). Please be so kind as to let us know your rough arrival AND departure times. This information allows us to plan and prioritize our time and our tasks. Also, we often receive requests from guests for earlier/later check-in and check-out times than those posted. We like to accommodate these requests, including yours if this applies, as much as possible. MANY THANKS!
WE UPDATE OUR CALENDAR DAILY. Even though Airbnb suggests contacting the host first, if you know you want to stay with us and the dates are open on the calendar, feel free to go ahead and book the dates you're interested in. We look forward to hosting you :)

The room is at the end of a hallway where you can see Cary Street and the Byrd Theatre. The room has it's own corner gas-log fireplace for the winter weather and a Hunter fan for those who like air circulation. The room has 4 windows so it's a bright and welcoming space. For your convenience, we have put a mini fridge and Keurig single-cup brewer stocked with a variety of teas and coffees, both caffeine-free and regular (let us know if you'd like cider and/or hot chocolate) in the room. The shared bathroom is the room next to your private bedroom.
Breakfast is self-serve so you can eat when it best suits your schedule. Along with the regular types of breakfast fare, we usually have on hand dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegetarian options. Please let us know if you have special dietary needs.
The house is a 1920s house that's recently been almost completely renovated but which has retained it's charm and many original details. (We continue making upgrades, so please check with us regarding in-progress construction projects.) We have a wonderful front porch that faces the south so on a pleasant winter's day it's nice to sit and soak up the sun and in the summer time, to sit in the shade and take a break. We recently added a ceiling fan on the porch! We have all the modern conveniences including central air, amazing radiant heat, high-speed internet, and a dishwasher. We have a fully-functioning office set up with printers, a scanner and other office accoutrement should you need access to any of it.
As you can see from our reviews, we're hospitable and accommodating. Because I work from home, check-in/check-out is usually a breeze. (Knowing your rough check-in and check-out times helps me prioritize--please remember to include these details in your request. Many thanks!)
We look forward to hosting you! :-)
If you're out late, we'll leave the light on for you.

Interaction with Guests
The amount of interaction is up to our guests. Fiona works from home so is almost always available to answer questions or provide assistance as needed. She does have plenty to keep her busy, though, so will continue with her tasks unless you wish to interact with her. We will give you a house key--you are welcomed to come and go as you please and to interact as much, or as little, as you need to make your stay enjoyable and productive.
For food, fun and interesting things to see and do, make sure you check out our GUIDEBOOK/MAP!
Carytown: Diverse! Convenient! Locally owned! A wide variety of restaurants and stores. Lots of local beers and Virginia cider on tap. The Byrd Theatre! Byrd Park. Maymont & The Dooley Mansion. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Virginia Historical Society. Virginia Society of AIA. Agecroft Hall. The Virginia House. The Fan. VCU. MCV. Richmond Convention Center. Downtown. American Civil War Center. Tredegar Iron Works. Hollywood Cemetery. + MORE ... too many to list here.
Cary Street is within HALF a block right out the back door! From our house we have a view of Byrd Theatre (a Virginia Historic Landmark and also on the National Register of Historic Places). It has $1.99 movies 365 days of the year; what's more, every Saturday there are live performances on the Wurlitzer organ--this is a MUST see! Ray Dolby (yes, the creator of the Dolby Sound system) visited the Byrd in 2004 and was so impressed with it, he donated a Dolby Sound system (installed in 2006).
Immediately behind us on Cary Street is The Nile restaurant that serves delicious Ethiopian food. The front of the house is The Portrait house where there is a menu of craft beers and ciders on tap! Sit out on the deck and enjoy Cary Street up front and center! Bev's Homemade Ice Cream is next door! Secco's on the corner of the same block is also very nice with wonderful wines, local beers, hard cider, and a delicious menu of cheeses and fusion food. Capitol Coffee and Desserts has organic coffees, teas, sandwiches, treats, and vegan options (and free WiFi). Also, Coppola's deli (Best of Richmond) and the New York Deli (it's not really a deli, but a bar that's open 9 am till 2 am with a DJ after 10pm) are on either side of Byrd Theatre so you won't be lacking for wonderful food and entertainment. If these options aren't appealing, there are tons of restaurants all up and down Cary Street: Galaxy Diner, Mom's Siam, Thai Diner Too, Amici's, Can Can, Nacho Mamma's--WAY too many to list them all here. You may also enjoy the boutique, antique, and consignment shops in Carytown. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (has a cafe, a restaurant, free wi-fi, and live music on Thursdays until 9pm) is a short four-block walk away, as is the most amazing park system and trails for walking/jogging/biking. Make sure you check out our guide book/map!
Within 1 block of city transportation. Another Two bus routes are within 1-2 blocks, and several others are within 10 blocks. Check out their routes at rideGRTC (add the usual suffix). Additionally, the area where we live is mostly flat, so RVA is a great city to see the sights by bicycle (downtown is a bit more hilly). We have some bikes available for rent if you are interested in this option.
Other Things to Note
Welcoming hosts ready to help you as needed.
Quiet time is 11 pm - 7 am, but you are welcomed to come and go as you please.
We adore out 90-year-old house which is work of art in-progress. My motto: There's always room for improvement (whether on the inside, or on the outside). Maybe it's an asset, maybe it's a liability. Nevertheless, I have it: A keen ability to see where we can improve. We are constantly tweaking and upgrading the house to make it more accommodating and functional for our guests (for instance, installing a heated floor in our complete demolition and remodel of the 90-year-old bathroom). You may see signs of our work in the common areas: tools, in-transition tasks, in-progress projects, etc. Your space, however, is a relaxing room that's clean, comfortable, and welcoming and is on the second floor from where you can see Cary Street.
We have a small, friendly 11 pound toy poodle who is hypo-allergenic so he does not shed--at all! He's usually very quiet so you won't hear him unless someone is walking up to the house: He will bark to let you know he's keeping an eye out for newcomers--he makes for a GREAT door bell! If you like dogs, you'll become best friends. If dogs are not your thing, once he comes to greet you and say hello, he'll wander off and amuse himself.
If you're out late, we'll leave the light on for you.
PROCEEDS: Part of our proceeds provide much needed funds for 2 sets of sisters who live near the dump in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, so the 4 girls can go to school. Our monthly contributions pay for their entire year's schooling, including supplies, uniforms, and school shoes. Thank you!
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THE FOLLOWING:
THE GOLDEN RULE: Treat others as you would have them treat you--with respect and consideration.
Please be cognizant of your footprint: Because you walk away does not mean whatever you were doing before you walked away disappears in a puff of smoke.
I attempt to keep our towels and washcloths free of stains and discolorations and have done my best to make prior guests aware to PLEASE, USE THE TOWELS TO ONLY DRY WASHED AND CLEAN hands (or other CLEAN items) and to NOT WIPE OFF creams, lotions, potions, benzoyl peroxide products (often found in acne treatments), food, or dirt onto the towels without FIRST RINSING/WASHING YOUR HANDS AND/OR FACE. Should you encounter a stained or discolored towel, please be assured it is clean, but that someone before you has used it to clean off makeup, dirt, or other staining substances including acne medicines or creams that contain BENZOYL PEROXIDE and which leave unsightly bleached out blotchy spots on our colored towels, hand towels, kitchen towels, or wash cloths. We have plenty of cleaning rags and will leave a small bag of them in the bottom dresser drawer for dirt or spills. Feel free to use them and drop them in the bucket in front of the washer. Thanks!
RULES RULES RULES--you have rules?!
RULE # 1: Enjoy your stay with us!
RULE #2: If you decide to stay with us, please READ your CONFIRMED ITINERARY--it contains all of our CONTACT INFORMATION, including our address and phone numbers, + DETAILED DIRECTIONS.
RULE #3: Quiet time is 11 pm-7 am. You are free to come and go whenever you please regardless of the hour of the day or night. We have had the pleasure of hosting fabulous guests who are incredibly thoughtful and considerate, so people's comings and goings have been no worries at all. We merely ask you to be aware of noise levels during quiet time 11pm-7 am--thanks!
RULE # 4: LIVE WITH INTENTION AND PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR FOOTPRINT
If you open it, CLOSE it.
If you turn it on, turn it OFF.
If you drop it, pick it UP.
If you dirty it, CLEAN it.
If you borrow it, RETURN it.
If you break it or lose it, REPAIR it or REPLACE it.
If you slide it out (the chair, for example), slide it BACK in.
And other generally basic rules of CARE and CONSIDERATION for people and their things.
RULE #5: Smoking outside only please. Please place cigarette butts in the container provided rather than toss them (again, it's a matter of being aware of your droppings/footprint).
RULE #6: After you have checked in and you realize you have a question or concern, contact me! I'm available in person, by text, by Airbnb message, or mobile/cell phone.
RULE #7: We recycle! The bin is next to the refrigerator.
Other than that, I'm sure we'll figure things out as we go!
We may not always get the chance to thank you in person, but your thoughtfulness and consideration is very much noticed, and very much appreciated. THANK YOU!
If you choose not to read the listing description or the house rules and then review us negatively on something we've already covered ... all I can say is, "Stupid is as stupid does" (credit "Forest Gump"). But! If you've read to this point, you are NOT that type of person! Rather, you are about to become another one of our AWESOME guests who motivate us to continue doing what we love to do--host AMAZING Airbnb GUESTS! MWAH! & a big HUG! We very much look forward, and count ourselves lucky, to host such WONDERFUL PEOPLE AS YOU!
Clean, cozy, perfect location and delightfully friendly, easygoing hosts. Wonderful stay as always!!
The house was very nice, so many great things, like a coffee machine and mini fridge in the room and a bathroom close by with heated floors... Not to mention the perfect location! So many cool little stores, places to eat and things to see. Fiona was very fun and accommodating, it was a very pleasant, relaxing stay.
We really enjoyed our stay with Fiona and wish we had more time to explore in Richmond. Her daughter Michelle was very helpful in showing us around and very friendly. We were very comfortable in our room and enjoyed the Keruig and fridge.
The location was perfect. Walkable to many, many restaurants and shops.
We would definitely stay with Fiona again when we come back to Richmond to see all of her renovations completed. Thanks again Fiona & Michelle
I had a truly wonderful experience staying with Fiona & Family! The room and house are so comfortable and provided everything and more that I could've wanted for my stay in Richmond. I slept like a baby in that cozy bed! Love the heated floors in the bathroom. The house is quite literally a few steps from restaurants, cafés, shops, etc. - an excellent location! Fiona, Keith & family (including puppy) were so hospitable and warm. I feel that I've gained new friends in Richmond! Thank you!!
Fiona and Keith were great hosts! They are very welcoming folks and offered everything a traveler could hope for. The room was comfortable and gets great natural light. Very close to Cary street which is good for food, drinks and shopping. Parking was never any trouble and the place was easy to find. I would definitely stay here again.
We did not get to meet Fiona, but were welcomed by her daughter Michelle, who was warm, friendly and helpful. The room is delightful with lots of natural light, and exactly as depicted. I loved the extra touches- bathrobes, access to toiletries one had forgotten to bring etc..We arrived in the evening and thanks to Michelle's recommendations were able to catch a show at the historic Byrd theatre ( 5 minutes away) for $2! There's lots of restaurant choices close by too. I would definitely come back.
Fiona was such a lovely host and we couldn't have been happier with our experience! The room was clean, modern and had every amenity we could have needed and more. We also loved the claw foot tub and heated tile floors in the bathroom. Fiona was incredibly accommodating and gave us the perfect recommendations for us to make the most of our experience. Carytown was definitely worth the trip and we highly recommend this stop for those looking to travel through the Richmond area!

ABOUT FIONA: She first traveled using Airbnb and loved it! When Fiona returned to the States, she was instrumental in getting the family on board to host on Airbnb.
She's educated, well traveled, respectful and fun, and a transplant from Australia. Fiona has diverse tastes in music, food, and friends. She loves different cultures and connecting with people from all walks of life. She's just as happy dancing on a dirt floor in Mexico as she is dancing on a ballroom floor in Washington, DC (hmm ... maybe that's because she loves dancing! Fiona's credo: Who needs the gym when you can DANCE!)
Fiona grew up by the shores of the Pacific Ocean and in the the middle of the Sonoran Desert. She's lived in cities with populations in the millions and a one-horse town with a population of ... oh, around ... fewer than one hundred (yikes!). Fiona is open to adventures and new experiences. She is easy to get along with, and fun to travel with. Fiona is open to most lifestyles and understands there's not one exclusive formula for success--there are an infinite number of ways in which to successfully navigate relationships, the world, and life's ups and downs.
Fiona likes to keep a balance: She's quite happy taking time to be with herself as well as spending time engaging with others. Her native language is English, but Fiona is fluent in Spanish. She's studied smatterings of other languages and also speaks conversational Persian (Farsi) and elementary Arabic (current language of study). Besides managing an online editing business, Fiona is multi-talented and knows how to sew, knit, crochet, paint (fine arts & walls), read music and play basics on a smattering of instruments, write, install a computer network, fix a computer, repair, dig up and replace plumbing, lay tile, replace a wax ring and the innards of a toilet, do other types of handyperson work around the house, change the oil and fuses in a car, diagnose (some) car problems, panel beat and spray paint a car, etc. Fiona has been described as a renaissance woman.
ABOUT THE FAMILY: Keith is a born-and-raised Richmonder, so if there's anything you need to know about Richmond or the surrounding area, just ask! He's a hospitable host and enjoys our Airbnb guests! The children: one is grown and is working on her medical degree at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. The other is a straight-A student in high school and very much enjoys meeting and engaging with the diverse mix of people we have the good fortune to host through Airbnb.
FOR OUR AIRBNB GUESTS: Fiona & Family don't discriminate based on anything--not race, not religion, not language, not culture, not sex, not sexual orientation, not education, not socioeconomic status, not how much $ is in your bank account (as CPAs, both Fiona & Keith know appearances are NOT necessarily reality), nor your political leanings. We have friends from Central America who don't have more than a 6th grade education, and we have friends with multiple PhDs. We are equally comfortable conversing and engaging with both sets of friends--and everyone in between. Whatever your background, we look for the things we have in common through which we will connect and engage with you.
PROVISO: Regardless of the genitalia, Fiona & Family have two deal breakers: 1) bullies--in every sense of the word--including those who intimidate, ostracize, belittle, or emotionally and/or physically bully others, and 2) people who are not respectful of others and/or the belongings of others, which is very closely related to bullying anyway: they're both disregarding the sovereignty of someone else and/or their belongings. We practice what we preach, so you can be assured that at all times we will be respectful of you, your space, your privacy, your wishes, and your possessions.
We look forward to meeting you and, if the timing's right, to having whatever interesting conversation(s) you may have time to fit in to your stay with us!
MOTTO 1: Remember to act spontaneously from time to time--it maintains the balance between order and chaos.
MOTTO 2: Take calculated risks (versus dumb ones)--it keeps the adrenaline in your system, and the fun in your life!
MOTTO 3: Educate yourself--it enlivens your brain: Our classroom is all around us, all the time--and it's FREE!
MAY YOU FOREVER BE THE BENEVOLENT RULER OF YOUR DOMAIN THAT IS YOUR LIFE!
WISHING YOU SAFE TRAVELS AND AMAZING ADVENTURES!
