Ours is a three-story condo in the Faubourg Marigny, voted one of the ten best neighborhoods in America. There are 3 coffee shops within a two-block area; Frenchmen St. (the locals' Bourbon) with clubs and restaurants is a ten-minute walk and the French Quarter five minutes further. Jazz Fest is a straight shot down Esplanade Avenue and an hour's walk if you don't want to deal with car or cab.
Our condo is over a hundred-years-old with 12-foot ceilings, balcony, hardwood floors, stone fireplaces and brick walls but was totally remodeled after Katrina. From the double-doored (total security) entry, the stairs lead to the main floor, consisting of a large living room with balcony, dining room which seats 6, kitchen, library with Pottery Barn queen sleeper sofa, and 1 1/2 baths. The huge Master Bedroom and bath are on the third floor with king-size brass bed, skylights, and a window with view of the city skyline. Washer/dryer and off-street parking.
No smoking, no parties, and love it as much as we do!
Janet was a great host. She set up the place fantastically and was very welcoming. Whenever I had an issue, she dealt with it quickly.
The only issues with the place were:
The internet was incredibly slow. I've heard this is an issue for most of New Orleans. Was a real pain as I did a lot of my work at night over a server connection and so video was slow.
The TV in the downstairs library had cable that would go in and out. Again, I didn't watch that much TV, but the few times I did the quality wasn't great.
The upstairs bedroom has no curtains on the large bay window. Several times I worked nights and so not having a way to black out the sun meant I didn't get a ton of sleep.
These issues aside, it was a great place and I loved the location. A couple of cool places to walk to and close the Frenchman and the Quarter.
Janet's townhouse was absolutely lovely. Exactly as pictured! Any guest who is a lover of art & material culture will adore this home. Fascinating collection of objets d'art from around the world spanning different eras, all assembled according to the very funky personal tastes of the owners. We were blown away by this awesome find! The location is amazing. Quick walk to Frenchmen & easy bike to the Quarter. Close to the best of both the Marigny & Bywater--> d.b.a, Blue Nile, Satsuma, Feeling's Cafe, Maurepas, Mariza, Mimi's, Bacchanal, Euclid Records, and the amazing Bargain Center (do NOT miss if you're into antiques & collectibles!) Fun neighborhood, immaculate home. Thank you again, Janet!
My daughter and son-in-law loved their stay! The place is even more gorgeous than the photos. And they loved the neighborhood as well, enjoying their best meal there. In all, a rare and wonderful experience.
We can not thank Janet & Steve enough for sharing their lovely home with us during our visit to New Orleans. From the moment we walked through the door we felt like this was our second home. The sleeping accommodations for two couples were very comfortable and private. The balcony was just lovely and perfect for our morning coffee and evening happy hour. We entertained numerous family and friends for evening drinks and they were all as impressed with the home as we were.
We were thrilled with the lovely and tasteful decor and amazing art & literature. I learned so much about NO from the available literature and found myself, for the first time, realizing exactly how much New Orleans is a city of living history, with a spirit like no other I've experienced. We are in love with this city and certainly will return and hopefully Janet & Steve's place will be available for our stay. I'm still dreaming of our visit to one of the most wonderful cities and best rental!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. My sister's 50th birthday was more than amazing because of your kindness in sharing your home with others.
This is a great old house in the best location in New Orleans. Janet was responsive and helpful. Would happily stay again.
Beautiful home with great funky decor in one of my favorite parts of New Orleans. Note: if you like to sleep in late and like a dark bedroom, this may not be the place for you. The bedroom has skylights and a large window, all of which have no coverings. Janet was a great hostess and I would happily stay here again.
Janet's listing is absolutely fabulous and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a genuine New Orleans experience. It's close enough to walk to the quarter, but just far enough away to be quiet in the evening.
The neighborhood was filled with local coffee houses, restaurants and points of interest.
Janet was a gracious host and promptly answered any questions we had in regards to the listing or neighborhood.
I am a Professor of English and my husband owns an employee-benefits firm. Our weekday/workaday world is in the northern part of the state while our weekend/wonderful world is in New Orleans, our favorite of all cities. The love must be contagious as two of our children, both lawyers, have relocated there. Seldom do we use the car as days consist of exercise along the river and strolling the French Quarter while nights feature a neighborhood restaurant, music on Frenchmen Street, theatre at Southern Rep, or movie at Canal Place.
Still, we love to travel, one of our favorite destinations having been Egypt before the turmoil. Since we met in NYC, we make regular pilgrimages and pretend to be tourists. It's that feeling of being local that we hope our New Orleans condo inspires in our guests.
Laissez les bon temps rouler!
