The Space

(Updated 21 May 2012: We are proud to have earned the Airbnb "Superhost" badge which is awarded by Airbnb HQ to selected hosts who have received outstanding reviews from previous guests and have made contributions to the Airbnb system and community to improve the overall experience).

(Update 21 September 2011: We are featured in the AirBnB "Paris Collection" which is a hand-picked selection of 40 Paris properties that the AirBnB staff feel are exceptional. Thanks to our guests for the fantastic reviews!)

Renovated in early 2011, with an interior designer's personal touch, this flat will appeal to those who prefer contemporary design but don't want to dissolve the old-world charm of original hard-wood floors and other features that are a quintessential part of living in an historic Parisian building. You'll find all the amenities and you won't find any clutter of personal belongings because we feel that it's an important part of the experience to feel you're coming to Your place -- not tiptoeing around someone else's stuff.

Located on the top-floor (with a small elevator), your bright and airy flat is flooded with south-westerly light from the living room window and morning light from the north-east facing bedroom window.

- Bedroom(s): 1 separated bedroom with a king-sized bed with high-quality ironed sheets and pillows. There's an air-conditioning unit in this room for the rare moments when it gets too hot.

- Spacious and versatile living-room area converts (if needed) to a 2nd bedroom at sleeping time with a ceiling-to-floor curtain that swings around for visual privacy and isolation from the rest of the flat. You can sleep 1 person on the comfy couch and 1 person in a single-sized fold-out bed. And/or pull out the queen-sized Tempurpedic mattress (sheets and pillows provided) onto the floor to sleep two people. Up to 4 adults can sleep comfortably in the living room area, but I designed it more for a family with children and would expect that the space would feel cramped if it were 4 adults sleeping in this area. There's no air-conditioning here, but a portable fan -- when strategically placed at the entry of the bedroom -- can circulate the air-conditioned air into this area when it gets really hot. Otherwise, the evening breeze + fan is usually enough to get through a typical Paris summer evening.

- In the curtain-opened configuration, a bar separates living-room from the kitchen area, allowing you to interact with each-other while making preparations in the kitchen. There's a TV connected to cable channels from many different countries, high-speed wi-fi internet access and free phone calls to normal land and cellular phones of North America and France. Calls to other European countries, India, Brazil, Argentina, Australia are free too if you call normal fixed land-line numbers. A plug adapter for US/UK laptops is provided.

- Kitchen: fully equipped with microwave, oven, dishwasher, gas-stove, large fridge, toaster, kettle, pots/pans, tableware, etc. There's a fold-out table with enclosed chairs.

- Bathroom: Clean, spacious bathroom with bathtub/shower (unlimited French style on-demand hot water system, but downside is that the water pressure is low by american standards) and a toilet in a separate room. Soap, shampoo, towels provided - the kind of high quality stuff you'll find in a boutique-hotel. A washing machine (with built-in dryer) is tucked away under the designer sink and custom-fitted counter-top. Hang-drying, Hair-dryer, Iron & (email hidden) plug adapter provided.

Guest Access

We've tried to make it feel like *your* home away from home. Thus our own personal items are locked away. You'll have total privacy and lots of empty storage space. Plus we've stocked the kitchen and refrigerator with basics (coffee, pasta, etc.)

Interaction with Guests

I am an Airbnb "superhost" which means you'll be taken care of no matter what the problem and hour of need.

The Neighborhood

A little known piece of history is that your flat is located on a patch of land which was once an island called "Ile Louvier". Around 160 years ago, the small offshoot of the river was diverted so this smallest sibling of the 3 islands in the center of Paris, became a part of the right-bank, leaving only 2 emblematic islands in the city's center.

Located in the highly acclaimed 4th arrondisement in heart of Paris, adjacent to the Saint-Louis Island, the botanical gardens (with a mini-zoo), the Latin Quarter, and Le Marais village, This idyllic location has been the the backdrop for many Paris romantic films including "Before Sunset" and "Midnight in Paris". You can stroll along the river, take a boat-ride, partake in the picnicking, dance tango or salsa, shop in the open-air farmer's markets, or browse the designer and antique shops. You'll be immersed in all that makes this area so quintessentially Parisian and attracts discerning locals to live here in one of Paris's most picturesque neighborhoods.

Very accessible (2 to 7 minutes walking) to all kinds of public transport: bus, metro, city-bikes, boat, and even the direct RER train which can take you to Musée d'Orsay, Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and Versailles. There's a boat "Batobus" dock on the opposite side of the river where you can make a round-trip to the Eiffel Tower and take in the city's beautiful bridges and medieval architecture along the way using the hop-on-hop-off option.

Our street has a separated bike lane and there is an adjacent "Velib" city-bike station from where you can rent a bike for 2€ per day. Bicycling in Paris by using the innovative bike scheme is one of the best ways to enjoy the city. You're lucky to be at the cross-roads of many different bike-paths taking you to all directions in the city.

You can easily get to the airports using the metro/train. (Details on meeting time and the pros/cons of various transfer options will sent to you in a few days prior to your arrival and with your booking confirmation. See "House Manual").

EVERYTHING in the SURROUNDING AREA (5-20 minutes walking distance):
- Your flat is across the street from one of the top-ranked Paris bakeries called "My father was a Baker"
- A mini-convenience store, open until 10:30pm every day, is a block away.
- Cafes, pizzerias and a wide selection of traditional French bistros catering to discerning local clients are all within walking distance.
- A supermarket (Franprix), an organic store (Bio C' Bon), pharmacy, doctor, hospital, credit-card machine, florist, wine, cheese, and other specialized shops, open-air farmer's markets (the "Marché Maubert" -- the oldest known Paris open-air farmers market and The Bastille market on the canal just north of the Bastille).
- An avant-garde contemporary art museum "La Maison Rouge" and the outstanding Paris urban design museum called "Le Pavillon d'Arsenal"
- Great areas for strolling: Le Marais (aka "the village"), the Saint-Paul Village, and Place des Vosges, Notre Dame and Saint Louis Island
- The Botanical Gardens and Natural History Museum and a mini-zoo are across the river.
- On Sundays, the road along the river is closed to cars and open to pedestrians, roller-bladers, and bicyclists.
- Cinemas, Opera, and night-life (jazz clubs, lounges, cafes & bars) in the Bastille and Marais areas.
- One of the best Thai-massage spas in Paris to relax those muscles from your long journeys and sight-seeing.

Getting around

Many public transport options (bike, metro, train, bus) and easy connections to airports, Versailles, Disney, and South of France. Bike paths all around and parking garages close by. There's even a public boat dock.

Other Things to Note

This really is an amazingly central location along the river that runs thru the most historic and beautiful part of Paris. Check out the 100s of happy reviews from previous guests. We are Airbnb travellers ourselves and have tried to make this the kind of experience (amenities and service) that we'd want if we were the travelers.

We've lowered the nightly rate by 33% thru 2014 to compensate our future guests for any potential inconvenience due to construction noise (and loss of a beautiful view) from the nearby construction site of a 7-story luxury building. The noise risk is only between 8:30am to 5pm on weekdays when the crew operates. Although our recent guests have confirmed that noise during these hours is less than what other flats in an urban environment have from neighbors or street noise, we want you to be aware (and hopefully pleasantly surprised).

  • The apartment is gorgeous in person! Very much like a page out of the Ikea catalogue. The furnishings were new, nice, and very comfortable. It was clear this is not a home with personal effects, which is what we wanted. We required more of a 'one bedroom suite' and that is what we got and more! The open floorplan is perfect, and although we only had 2 adults and 1 child, this flat would have easily slept 6! I loved the use of the washing machine (and Ivonne and her husband's assistance when we didn't know how to work it) also the A/C was great! (another thing Ivonne walked us through)

The neighborhood was ideal! Located on the trendy right bank, but not in a tourist area. There was an amazing bakery across the street and a market a short walk away. Close to both the metro and major train station. We were able to walk to all the attractions, even the Eiffel tower!

Safe and secure building. I was nervous about remembering the codes, but it was not a problem! Very nice and quiet neighbors, never saw them! The lift was SO helpful with our luggage, however many times we chose to walk up or down the 6 floors, it was well lit, safe and fun :)

Host was amazing!!! Being an American I was confused on working the washer/dryer and the A/C. Ivonne's husband called and was so helpful over the phone when I emailed/called for assistance. Ivonne followed up as well. She truly cared that we had a wonderful stay.

Overall this is 100% where I would stay again in Paris. I had never used AirBnB before and Ivonne was an amazing host. Ricardo (her friend) met us, and was so sweet, taking the time to show us the apartment. There were several books on Paris, and a sheet with the wi-fi passcode, etc. that answered all our questions.

Notes - Great view of the Seine river out the bedroom window. Cute balcony off the livingroom. Loved the Body Shop shampoo, soaps, etc. Had blowdryer and every other detail a hotel would have. I cannot recommend Ivonne or her apartment enough. We had a wonderful experience in Paris and this apartment was a huge part of it!

  • This apartment is in a decent location, not far from two metro stations, which is very convenient. It is a small apartment, good for a couple and 2 children, more is pushing it, even though there is sleeping accommodations for more. Air conditioning is only available in the master bedroom, two portable fans are available for the rest of the apartment, which makes for some hot nights if you have more than two kids and it happens to be raining so you can't open the windows to let the breeze in. The apartment is in need of some repairs, like the bathroom lock falling apart among other things; nothing super major, but it would make it a nicer stay. The building that is supposed to block the view is still under construction, but completed enough so there is no pretty view anymore. The closest grocery store/supermarket is several blocks away, thankfully there is a little cart in one of the closets, but you can't buy much at once as it's not strong enough. There is a nice bakery right across the street, it doesn't open too early in the morning but their goods are delicious. The closest pharmacy is a very long walk or a metro stop away. Make sure to get instructions on how to work the dryer as it's not explained on the instructions. Ivonne was very helpful and responsive though, she helped us figure things out right away. Another nice feature you won't find in all locations is that the apartment has wi-fi and free calls to the US and within France, which we took advantage of throughout our stay.

    Response from Ivonne:

The location is a premium one -- not just decent: situated near the river Seine, between the Marais, Bastille, and the islands in the Seine (Notre Dame and Ile St. Louis). There are 5 metro lines within a 6 min walk and 2 major train stations within a 10-15 minute walk (as per (website hidden)). Air conditioning is strong enough for the entire volume of the flat, but is only in the bedroom as Kurt correctly points out. The fans can be strategically placed to spread the cool to the living room. The flat is regularly maintained...recent work includes re-finished hardwood floor, a new toilet, a new dining table, and now a tightened bathroom lock. The flat is on the top floor and enjoys lots of light from east to west, dawn and twilight. And there's still a wonderful view of Paris streets as shown in the pictures. The little grocery cart is rated for up to 23Kg or 50lbs. The bakery opens at 7:30am on weekdays. The closest groceries are from a corner store which is across the street and about 100 meters/yards (1 minute walk). The organic grocery store is a 5 minute walk and the supermarket is a 6 minute walk as per (website hidden) Maps. The closest pharmacy is next to the supermarket. All appliances are shown and instructions offered during check-in and we encourage our guests to contact us if in any doubt at any time of the day or night. The internet wi-fi is as described and will be getting an even faster upgrade to 100mb Fiber in mid-July.

  • I will stay in this condo when I am in Paris next time. Its comfortable, well-equipped, close to the Metro, walking distance to Bastile - its restaurants and night life. The host gave me a call a day before my trip, which was really kind of her. Everything was as per instructions provided. had a few minor glitches, but were immediately solved. I am sure I would have had similar glitches even if I had stayed in a hotel. Enjoyed our stay.

  • Yvonne was an excellent host, responsive to our needs and caring. The neighborhood was quiet, and if you like a lot of restaurants around, it is not the place to book. A word of caution when renting here. Both bed and sofa are low to the ground, not a problem for the young, but if you are elderly or even slightly disabled it will create a problem for you.

    June 2014
    Response from Ivonne:

Hi Leslie. We loved having you and really appreciate that you entrusted us to look after your needs during your stay.
There are a handful of restaurants on the same street. And many more withing 5-minute walking radius, including our favorite place in Paris (many previous guests say it was their best meal anywhere in Paris!). If you walk 10 minutes, you'll be overwhelmed with choice.
The bed and sofa are a standard height, it's true. But we chose the highest comfort -- and most expensive mattress we could find which our own parents have really appreciated for lengthy stays. The support for the bed is independent for additional comfort. There's only 1 step between the street level and the flat which makes it easy to reach for someone who has trouble with stairs.

  • We stayed for a long weekend and really enjoyed the place.
The neighborhood is safe and well located: it's close to a couple of train stations, subways, Notre Dame, la Bastille and if you like to walk Marais is 20 minutes away.

The apt was clean and as advertised. Highly recommended!

  • We stayed at Ivonne's place for 5 nights while my wife and I were on our honeymoon in Paris. The apartment was in a great location and only a few minutes walk from a metro line and rental bikes. The apartment is spacious, clean and bright. The included washing/drying machine was quite a nice bonus too. Ivonne was really helpful with any questions we had about Paris and the apartment. I would highly recommend her place for anyone looking to stay at a nice apartment while they are in Paris.

  • Good location, great neighborhood, convenient and central to most sights and attractions. The host was great, helpful, caring, friendly and responsive to all our needs. The high speed internet access was great, the telephones (with free calls to the US and other countries) was very convenient, and allowed us to have a working vacation. We enjoyed our stay.

  • We (my girlfriend an me) stayed at the apartment for 4 nights. It was an overall wonderful trip to Paris. We were greeted by a young man who showed us everything what we needed and told us about the neighbourhood.
The location of the apartment is really great. Metro stations are nearby and you can walk to many sites.

The apartment itself is very well equipped. There was nothing to wish for.

There are only two very small negative points:
    - There really is a smell in the toilett
    - The apartment shows some wear and tear, and would need a little bit of mending here and there.

Overall it was a wonderful stay. Ivonne was very responsive and quick to get back at us and we can recommend the apartment even once the view is gone.

    Response from Ivonne:

I'm delighted you chose our place and that you have wonderful memories of your experience. I love to hear "there's nothing to wish for..." Thank you :-)
Next week, the WC bathroom is getting renovations (new fixtures, added ventilation, new tiles) which should make it shiny and smelling good like the rest of the apartment (which will also get a few touch-ups and upgrades).

I am happy to offer you accommodation in my beautifully renovated apartment. I take several trips a year (because my husband and I have families on separate continents and we love to travel) and stay in vacation rentals, boutique hotels and bed & breakfasts. And that means that I bring home the best ideas from these places. I've taken great pride in renovating this historic apartment with modern contemporary designs I learned during my studies in interior architecture. You'll see my attention to detail in the amenities I provide. And I'll be happy to share my knowledge of the area and life in Paris over a drink. And I want to hear about your hometown, your travel stories, and the good, the bad and the ugly of the places you've seen.
