We are located in the heart of Beijing. The house is in one of the few remaining Hutong areas (alleyways) of old Beijing, with courtyard houses. Along the nearby lakeshore it is very scenic and there (email hidden)ly nightlife. But once inside the alleys, there is no sound of traffic and the tranquility of traditional life still prevails.
Our home is a 7 minute walk to Prince Gong’s Mansion; a 15 minute walk to Beihai Park; a 30 minute walk to Jingshan Park ("Coal Hill"), where the last Ming Emperor ended his (email hidden) walk to Yonghegong (Lama Temple); (email hidden) walk to the Palace Museum (Forbidden City) and Tiananmen Square. We have excellent access to public transportation including subway lines 8 (station called Shichahai, 450m from us) and 6 (station called Beihai North, 800m), plus bus lines to many parts of the city.
This is a private home of a Canadian + Chinese couple, with backyard garden (in spring/summer), rooftop deck, kitchen, living room, and laundry room. We have modern comforts including decent bathrooms, hot water, purified drinking water, coffee machine, floor heating, air conditioners, and comfortable mattresses.
We are an English-Chinese bilingual and retired couple who can offer assistance in getting around Beijing. We are happy to show you around the neighborhood, the local supermarket, farmers market, bank, post office, department store, swimming place, and the like. We can help you figure out what public transport to take to get to places in Beijing or suggest places to go for buying specific things or having items made.
Our ideal guests are mature English-speaking travelers who are interested in sampling life in Beijing but not wanting to give up some basic comforts. We are not suitable for young students coming to study Chinese or who are looking for jobs. Young travelers: please check out Backpackingchina, it's a youth hostel in our neighborhood, cheaper and more suitable for you. We have one short-haired house cat. So people with cat allergies please be forewarned.
This is an upstairs bedroom, with shared bathroom (shared with up to two other guests). It is a loft-like bedroom, quite spacious that sleeps two. But the two beds cannot be put together.
I had a lovely stay in Gladys Garden! Yang Zhi and Dave are the perfect hosts and do everything to make you feel at home. Thank you so much! The rooms are nicely furnished, comfortable and cosy, the breakfast with homemade bread, honey and fruit salad is just great, there is always time for some pleasant chat and in no time you feel like part of the household. Very difficult indeed to pack your things and travel on! So I am really glad I shall be back in three weeks!
Gladys Garden got a perfect place right in the centre of Old Beijing - and just a few steps away from the party places, got a great views and solid atmosphere of old China. David and Yang themselves turned out to be a great and helpful hosts that made our stay in Beijing easy and comfortable. P.S.: Be sure to check the roof of the Gladys Garden for a great view on the hutong, nearby Drum and Bell Towers - it's a great place to start a morning with a cup of coffee and a piece of much approved Yang's banana bread!
What a fabulous place to stay in Beijing. Great location, great hosts and a great room. We really appreciate the help that David and Yang Zhi offer, even taking us to obtain a SIM card and helping with public transportation and more! The room was just as described, with a western bathroom. Really a fabulous home away from home in Beijing.
Thank you for the lovely stay. We appreciated all the help given us and the homey feel . Hearing about your family history was fascinating . Future guests might like to know that chocolate is a favoured treat in this household.
Thank you David and Yang Zhi,
Once again you made my Beijing stay most pleasant and comfortable.
I enjoy staying in your welcoming and warm home. I love sharing enriching moments of conversation and philosophy with both of you and your guests.
I feel privileged to have met you. Please accept my gratitude.
With love, I wish good continuation,
It's safe to say that choosing to stay with David and Yang Zhi made my trip much better than it otherwise would have been. They were a wealth of information about the area and very accommodating. (Due to my flight I arrived around midnight)
Houhai is a nice little area. Very eclectic with plenty of local bars with live music at night. Gladys Garden is located very close to a metro stop (5 min walk) and then you can get almost anywhere in Beijing you need to get to.
The room was comfortable and a very good value. If I'm ever in Beijing again, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else.
It's with a very good location ,you can find tradition & morden in here,It's comfortable...as clean & warm at home.David and Yang Zhi are very kindly,I can't to say again that Yang Zhi cooks very well, her banana cake is memorable in my life.
It was a pleasure to stay at Yang Zhi, David and Yoda's house. Perfect location in a quiet typical part of town, super comfortable house and wonderful hosts that know how to make you feel like home. Yang Zhi was also very helpful to book a trip to the Great Wall for me.
This place is definitely where I'll stay if I ever have to go back to Beijing!
Thank you again!
My brother and I had a wonderful 6 night stay at David and Yang Zhi's house. The apt was clean and comfortable, location was excellent, and we couldn't ask for better hosts. It was like staying in a home away from the comforts of my own home. I enjoyed the conversations and stories we shared in the living room with everyone in the house. I would definitely book again when I come back to Beijing!
We stayed over Christmas in the Department of Philosophy, as David calls the kitchen, and we had a great time with hosts and guests. We agree with everyone her on Airbnb: great stories, great music, spot less clean, banana bread and Yoda. We will come again.
