We are located in the heart of Beijing. The house is in one of the few remaining Hutong areas (alleyways) of old Beijing, with courtyard houses. Along the nearby lakeshore it is very scenic and there is a lively nightlife. But once inside the alleys, there is no sound of traffic and the tranquility of traditional life still prevails.
Our home is a 7 minute walk to Prince Gong’s Mansion; a 15 minute walk to Beihai Park; a 30 minute walk to Jingshan Park ("Coal Hill"), where the last Ming Emperor ended his life; a 3 km walk to Yonghegong (Lama Temple); and a 4 km walk to the Palace Museum (Forbidden City) and Tiananmen Square. We have excellent access to public transportation including subway lines 8 (station called Shichahai, 450m from us) and 6 (station called Beihai North, 800m), plus bus lines to many parts of the city.
This is a private home of a Canadian + Chinese couple, with backyard garden (in spring/summer), rooftop deck, kitchen, living room, and laundry room. We have modern comforts including decent bathrooms, hot water, purified drinking water, coffee machine, floor heating, air conditioners, and comfortable mattresses.
We are an English-Chinese bilingual and retired couple who can offer assistance in getting around Beijing. We are happy to show you around the neighborhood, the local supermarket, farmers market, bank, post office, department store, swimming place, and the like. We can help you figure out what public transport to take to get to places in Beijing or suggest places to go for buying specific things or having items made.
Our ideal guests are mature English-speaking travelers who are interested in sampling life in Beijing but not wanting to give up some basic comforts. We are not suitable for young students coming to study Chinese or who are looking for jobs. Young travelers: please check out Backpackingchina, it's a youth hostel in our neighborhood, cheaper and more suitable for you. We have one short-haired house cat. So people with cat allergies please be forewarned.
This is an upstairs bedroom, with shared bathroom (shared with up to two other guests). It is a loft-like bedroom, quite spacious that sleeps two. But the two beds cannot be put together.
It's safe to say that choosing to stay with David and Yang Zhi made my trip much better than it otherwise would have been. They were a wealth of information about the area and very accommodating. (Due to my flight I arrived around midnight)
Houhai is a nice little area. Very eclectic with plenty of local bars with live music at night. Gladys Garden is located very close to a metro stop (5 min walk) and then you can get almost anywhere in Beijing you need to get to.
The room was comfortable and a very good value. If I'm ever in Beijing again, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else.
It's with a very good location ,you can find tradition & morden in here,It's comfortable...as clean & warm at home.David and Yang Zhi are very kindly,I can't to say again that Yang Zhi cooks very well, her banana cake is memorable in my life.
It was a pleasure to stay at Yang Zhi, David and Yoda's house. Perfect location in a quiet typical part of town, super comfortable house and wonderful hosts that know how to make you feel like home. Yang Zhi was also very helpful to book a trip to the Great Wall for me.
This place is definitely where I'll stay if I ever have to go back to Beijing!
Thank you again!
My brother and I had a wonderful 6 night stay at David and Yang Zhi's house. The apt was clean and comfortable, location was excellent, and we couldn't ask for better hosts. It was like staying in a home away from the comforts of my own home. I enjoyed the conversations and stories we shared in the living room with everyone in the house. I would definitely book again when I come back to Beijing!
We stayed over Christmas in the Department of Philosophy, as David calls the kitchen, and we had a great time with hosts and guests. We agree with everyone her on Airbnb: great stories, great music, spot less clean, banana bread and Yoda. We will come again.
Loved this place! Cosy, very friendly hosts and brilliant area. Looking forward to coming again :)
David and Yang Zhi are fantastic hosts! They were very helpful, arranging a great wall tour for us and recommended excellent places to eat. They were so welcoming, and made us feel at home in their lovely house in Beijing.
The location in the Hutongs near Houhai Lake is superb, and there is great access to all the best sights in Beijing and they generously supplied a bus pass to use which was awesome!
We just loved spending time with David and Yang Zhi, they're such friendly and interesting people, and a joy to stay with. Would absolutely recommend.
Really can't say enough about how pleasant the experience is staying with David and Yang Zhi.
Location is perfect as mentioned previously, right in the middle of Beijing just a few streets from a beautiful lake filled with music bars and delightful tourist shops.
However, when you get to the house you are just far enough away to escape the noise when you want to relax.
The house is clean, comfortable and has an amazing roof for enjoying cool Beijing mornings.
You couldn't find two more pleasant hosts, always so helpful with information and so friendly, always happy to make interesting conversation but also give space if you prefer.
The homemade breads and coffee for breakfast are the icing on the cake :)
Had a wonderful time staying at Gladys Garden. It was a real treat to be staying somewhere where the hosts really care about your experience and will be everything to help you. I would not hesitate to stay there again and recommend anyone to do the same. Thanks.
Yang Zhi and David were excellent host! The place was clean and tidy. They were very very helpful with our questions regarding Beijing. They were very friendly and were interested in learning from and about their guests. They liked to hear about our experiences good and bad. Please stay with them if you wish to experience and learn how Beijingers live.
