The Space

This is a wonderful relaxing retreat in the heart of the National Columbia Gorge Scenic area with a fantastic view of the Columbia River. Close to hiking, biking, skiing, kite boarding, fishing and sailing. On the property is a sauna, a nap nest in the woods by the year round creek that is on property and a walking garden. You have a porch with a view of the gorge and the Columbia river. There are 2 fire pits, a gas grill and walking gardens with herbs and fruit for you to cook with. Please read all of our reviews from the last 3.5 years, we are very proud of our reviews.
You will have your own 700 square foot private suite with a full living room, small sitting room, kitchenette ( with hot plate, micro, gas BBQ grill, coffee maker and toaster), wood stove, bathroom, bedroom and private porch. You will have your own private porch and door to enter and exit. Also there is a Hawaiian Lomi chair with 17 different massage settings so you can sit back and relax by the fire while getting a massage. The laundry room is also available for use but we will need to teach you a trick on how to use the washer but please just ask.

Our goal is for this to feel like your own private sanctuary away from it all in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, a year-round recreational area. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the view.

You can sit on the porch with a view of the Columbia River while you are barbecuing, drinking a cold pint or local wine you can hear Kanaka Creek which IS on property only 200 feet away(see pics). Just follow the bark chip path to the creek and the nap nest ( see pics). Please walk down to the stream with your tea, coffee, wine or beer. Feel free to tour the garden and pick the fruit, herbs and veggies for your cooking enjoyment.

We have wireless internet, TV for DVDs with Roku, Amazon for movies and Pandora for music. You may use our concrete fire pit for s'mores.

We are only1.7 miles from the town of Stevenson with wonderful restaurants, 3 breweries, wine tasting room, Skamania Lodge Golf Course and gift shops. Wind surfing, kite boarding, hiking, stand up paddle boarding, biking, sailing, wine tasting and fishing anywhere is the Gorge and come home (email hidden) he wood stove or a in the open air fire pit. We are 10 min from a huge number of amazingly beautiful hikes, mountain biking trails, fishing, waterfalls and hot springs and spas.

The couch pulls out into a queen bed for extra guests. (See $20 charge for extra guests beyond 2.) Chris and I live upstairs so we are on site to help with any questions or local suggestions. The two living quarters are separated by locked door so it is very separate and private.

We have 3 friendly dogs that will not be invited into your living quarters without your permission. Dogs and dog lovers are welcome! We allow our very friendly dogs to roam the property at their will, so please only bring friendly dogs.

The Retreat in the Gorge has been known to motivate artists creative juices -weather you are a musician, writer or painter the Retreat in the Gorge will settle your soul and cultivate your creativity.

As for outside fun we supply a dart board, bocce and badminton. We also supply two growlers from the two award winning local breweries that you can fill up and enjoy. There is also a gas grill on the porch for you to BBQ. Coffee and tea are available but breakfast is not included.

We have many books, maps and magazines with suggestions for wine tasting, fruit loop tours, hiking, biking, wind surfing, kite boarding and fishing in the area. Please read our reviews, they speak for themselves! **Please email an inquiry about your dates even if the calender says it is not available. Sometimes we can switch things around.
Also- we do live above you with three dogs. There have been no complaints about this and we are conscious you will be below us but, do not expect complete silence. We are very quiet and mellow and go to bed early.
**ALSO, CONSIDER BOOKING OUR "GLAMPING IN THE GORGE" AS WELL IF YOU HAVE A BIG GROUP or wedding. THEN YOU WILL HAVE THE WHOLE PROPERTY TO ENJOY FOR A CELEBRATION, wedding
OR FAMILY REUNION.**** We are also open to hosting a large event on our property if you would like to rent out the whole house and property for a reunion, family gathering or wedding. ****

Please read our reviews we are very proud of the positive responses we have received by our guests. You will notice that the resounding theme is that those who stay for only one or two nights really wish they had stayed for longer. So book for as long as you can. We look forward to meeting you.
**Also please read manual and directions before arriving to avoid any miscommunication.

**If the calendar says that it is unavailable during the week and you want to extend a weekend stay please let us know and we will open it up for you.
** Winter guests: We are 1000 feet in elevation and recommend good tires when it snows, which is rare, because we live on a hill. **

Guest Access

Sauna, Micro brew on home keg system- honor bar. Gas grill, wood stove, private porch, bocce, badminton, nap nest in the forest, massage chair....

Interaction with Guests

It is 100% up to the guests. We have had guest throughout the years that we have become great friends with, shared meals with and have come back again and again and others that would prefer to be left alone. It is very important to us to take the lead from the guest on interaction.

The Neighborhood

The Columbia River Gorge offers the best of outdoor activities including camping, hiking, biking, golf, whitewater rafting and kayaking, windsurfing and kiteboarding, boating, bird watching, photography, downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing – the list is endless. Indoor options are also readily available with world-class museums, wine tasting, superb dining opportunities, shopping and spa services. There is truly something for everyone in the Columbia River Gorge.

Just taking a drive through the Columbia River Gorge is an experience in itself as you will be in awe of this spectacular geological (website hidden) visit to the area is not complete without a visit to the breathtaking waterfalls.
The home sits on 3 aches with a stream on the property and a view of the Columbia river with territorial views of the Gorge.
Although we are only 1.7 miles away from Hwy 14 and the quaint town of Stevenson the retreat feels extremely remote because of the huge amount of trees and the lack of neighbors.

Getting around

no public transit. Plenty of parking. Only 45 min from the airport.

Other Things to Note

Dog friendly. We love dogs! Our dogs are friendly and love to meet friends. Wifi code is in the welcome packet.
** And we REALLY appreciate you writing a review after you leave to let others know about your experience. We also LOVE it when our guests share our link on (website hidden), (website hidden) or Instagram. Thank you to our loyal return guests for sending the love around and spreading the word:).

  • Karen and Chris's Columbia River Gorge retreat was the epitome of relaxation and a perfect spot for my wife and I to enjoy our one-year anniversary weekend. The unique property was wonderful and the view, gentle breeze, and sound of the burbling creek from our outdoor patio was total bliss. We read, napped, sipped wine, enjoyed frosty mugs of beer from the honor kegerator, cooked dinner on the grill, napped some more and just soaked in the simple beauty of the place. The lovely little town of Stevenson is just an hour from our place, but felt like another world away...it was so nice to leave the hustle and bustle behind.

The only "warning" I would give is that those looking for total privacy in a place may be more comfortably elsewhere. Karen & Chris live above with their 3 friendly dogs and enjoy the outdoor space just like the guests do. There were other AirBnB guests "glamping" in a separate area on the property about 100 yards from us. However, EVERYONE was very warm, easy-going, and a pleasure to share the space with. (And I mean "share" in a limited sense...the majority of the time we felt like we had the whole property to ourselves.)

Thank you Karen and Chris, we sure hope to see you again sometime!

  • Karen and Chris welcomed us warmly into their beautiful property upon our arrival and gave us useful tips about the Stevenson area amenities. The apartment is in the lower level and is well appointed. The wood stove was a great amenity given that it got a bit chilly at night. The kitchen is functional although it has only a mini fridge and cooking is limited to a two-burner portable electric stove. Karen and Chris have done a great job on the natural areas surrounding the house and it was fun walking around and admiring the landscaping. We did not use the nap nest. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom adequate. Because the accommodations are in the lower level, sounds from the upper level tend to filter down to the apartment. This may not be an issue for many people but we are light sleepers and it was apparent to us: Karen and Chris were very quiet but we could hear the pitter patter of the dogs. Overall, we were happy with our stay.

  • Karen and Chris were great hosts. They are so very friendly and their retreat near the Columbia River Gorge was everything my wife and I could hope for to celebrate our anniversary.

We arrived and found a "Happy Anniversary" welcome sign and delicious, fresh baked cookies. The bottom floor apartment space is private and completely sectioned off from the rest of the house. Between all the nice finishing touches - the comfy patio overlooking the gorge, all the fire pits, and the peaceful nap nook next to their creek - this place is a sure win for a romantic getaway. Karen and Chris put a lot of effort into this retreat and it shows. We will definitely be back.

  • Amazing view, cute place. Wonderful energy and great hosts. We had a very good time and we will love to go back. Highly recomended.

  • We enjoyed our stay at Karen & Chris' house. The pictures don't do it justice!

We were able to check in early and and we came and went as we pleased. On our second day there we came home to cookies on the counter top and a very nice personal note. On our last day we were able to meet Karen and she gave us a plate of lemon squares for the road.

The fireplace was very nice and the view is to die for!! The bed and all the furniture were all comfortable and the shower was clean and the water was hot.

We only had one small snag, our 8 month old pug wouldn't stop barking at the three dogs that reside in the house above, but other than that we had a great time and plan to go back in the late summer.

  • Karen and Chris' place was just as described and I had a wonderful stay. I would definitely stay there again. The garden, views, and surrounding area are beautiful and inspiring. Very relaxing.

  • The long weekend at Karen and Chris's Retreat could not have been more perfect (ok maybe it would have been a little bit more perfect if the weather had been nice the entire time!).

The space is well appointed with every comfort you would need, including a very effective massage chair! They had all kinds of treats laid out, and even a pay-as-you-drink kegerator on the porch with local brews.

The small stream further down their property is great as well, complete with a cabana to lounge or picnic in while you listen to the water gurgle. We pretty much will not stay anywhere else when next we're back in the area. It's very close to great hiking, eating, running, and wine tasting options which are pretty much what we spent our time doing. And they have a TV with lots of streaming options for when you're decompressing from your adventures.

We didn't see anyone until we went over to say hi so you'll have your privacy, but Chris was incredibly welcoming and friendly so don't come and go without saying hello! :) Book with absolute confidence.

  • Perfect!
I've never stayed at a nicer place. The bed was comfy. The rooms were clean and beautiful. The gardens were wonderful. Everything was just right.

  • This was the perfect spot for a long weekend in an incredibly beautiful part of the country. The house itself was so comfy and relaxing (the microbrew keg in the fridge was above and beyond awesome!), with a nice little kitchen, great bed, fireplace in the living room, and a stunning view of the forest and mountains. Chris and Karen have also done some lovely and amazing work on the land right around the house and it's really beautiful to wander around, with a perfect little spot by the creek to relax. In addition to all that, it's so easy to hop on the highway and follow the river west to tons of wineries and never ending Ohhh-and-Ahhh vistas, or to cross back into Oregon and check out all the orchards and more amazing scenery.

THANKS SO MUCH, Karen and Chris, for creating such a wonderful space and letting us share it for the weekend :)

    October 2013
  • Karen and Chris are both wonderful people and their dogs are great too. When we travel to that area again, I would not think of staying at any location but theirs. From the minute we arrived we found the property and host to be even better than we had expected. We had the bad luck of booking while a record storm hit the area, And the government shutdown. So we spent more time relaxing and enjoying the property.
Thank you, Karen and Chris for a wonderful stay
We hope we can make it back real soon.

About
Hi! Chris and I have lived in the Gorge for 7 years and in the Portland area for 14. We have been hosts with airbnb for 4 years and have absolutely loved the experience. We want your stay with us to be 100% perfect! We take the responsibility of being a host very seriously ( not in a freaky way) and really want this to be fantastic for you. We absolutely love to hike, and recreate in the area. We can direct you to wine tasting, fishing, kite boarding, wind surfing, yoga studios, spas, shopping or hiking. I am a school counselor and Chris is a sales rep. We have made some fantastic friends through this experience and it has restored our faith in the goodness of people. Our dogs are part of our family and hopefully you will love them as much as we do. We are looking forward to meeting you!
