The Pisa area, apart from boasting internationally renowned artistic treasures, also offers exciting possibilities in lesser known places sprinkled throughout the territory. Such villages and towns are to be found on our Pisan Hills Wine Trail: San Miniato, Palaia, La Rotta, Peccioli, Laiatico, Terricciola, Lari, Crespina, Fauglia, Lorenzana, Casciana Terme and Chianni.
This is also an ideal itinerary for those who prefer to use means other than the car
A centre of ancient origin, PISA was already an important port in Roman times, definitively asserting itself as a seagoing power in the 12th century when it became a Republic after participating in the First Crusade. It extended its influence over the whole Tuscan coast and Sardinia, succeeding in defeating its rival Amalfi and the Saracens. This period was the start of the town's phase of greatest economic prosperity and artistic splendour.
Short description surroundings Colle di Lari:
The apartment is located in a small village that belongs to the 9th century castle village of Lari. Colle di Lari and Aiale have medieval foundations, including the house that you are renting. So, you will walk on earth that has a long history, even with other cultures before the famous Etruscans that lived in Tuscany around (phone number hidden) b.C. There are always historic coins been found during agricultural works. After the village Colle di Lari the asphalt road ends and becomes agricultural. So, there is no drive through traffic and the only noise will come from the temperament of the Italians living in Colle. Colle di Lari is 30 minutes car drive from the centre of Pisa or 50 minutes from the centre of Florence. Lucca is one hour driving from Lari, Volterra, San Gimigniano, Carrara, La Spezia, Viareggio and Siena are average 1 ½ hours driving distance. To the nearest beach the car drive will be 30 minutes but not during work traffic. From april through September there is a wide variety of cultural events going on right in the village of Lari. See the website of the village Lari: (website hidden) and its links to cultural activities in the courtyard of the castle or the main piazza (website hidden) . History of the castle (English): (website hidden) and activities (website hidden)
In the nearbyhood with half an hour driving time of Lari there is a Geothermic Museum, which might be interesting for the kids. There are countless museums (see the museum guide in my library in the appartment) varying from the countless tourist museums in Pisa till the ethnographic-historic ones on the population’s living conditions or Etruscans, hundreds of abbeys, villas, castles and borgos, there is an Observatory Galileo Galilei, and one can learn Delta flying. All of this in the direct nearbyhoof of Lari. There are folkloristic activities, see at: (website hidden) or a prehistoric park near Peccioli with dinosaurs, great for the kids. One and a half hours driving distance there is the Parco di Collodi, an amusement park for kids who love Pinocchio, just behind Viareggio.
During the month of may, Lari holds its cherry festivities in and around the castello. The party depends on the ripeness of the cherries, see general information: (website hidden) as well as other activities in the castle’s court like theatre (organised by the asociation Rondine, which locals support: (website hidden) including contemporary poetry: (website hidden) or music (from Rock till experimental: (website hidden) and classic), see the English version on the history of the castle: (website hidden)_of_lari.shtml and see the alphabetical overview on all castles in Tuscany: (website hidden)_alfabetico.htm?p
Just a few hill’s drive there is the wellness spa city of Casciana Terme where you can plan a whole day of relax in the hot springs, see: (website hidden)_da_visitare/Natura_territorio/acque_termali/casciana_terme/Casciana_Terme.htm and (website hidden) showing various cures (website hidden) deriving from two different springs (36 centigrades Celcius) (website hidden) , while not too far there is another wellness center at the feet of the Monte Pisano with the name of San Giuliano Terme.

And so I can continue…
