Coconut grove has a great central location in puerto viejo. The rooms were spacious, clean, and well kept. Heidi and the people that work there were very friendly and helpful. If u are on the first floor it can get a little noisy hearing everyone upstairs walk around. Overall though a nice stay!
The coconut grove is a nice avcomodation, in the quiet side of Puerto viejo. Heidi & her staff are very welcoming. We slept in the 3 bed cabina downstairs. The downside of this cabina is that you her everything that happens in the rooms above you. It's very noisy due to the wooden floors.
I stayed for 2 nights with two of my friends and truly loved this location. The rooms were nice and clean and the outside area was very relaxing ( lots of tables, books and hammocks). If you're looking to stay very central in town, this is a great place to be. You can walk over several great local restaurants and bars or take a nice bike/car ride to do some hiking along the beach. Puerto Viejo is very different certainty has a unique cultural and climate of its own. It is definitely more than worth a visit.
Everything is nearby in this town, so you only need to choose a hotel on impressions from the room itself. Heidi Heilbronner offers the most spacious and comfortable rooms, you can ride a bike here! Only prevents many insects, including mosquitoes. But nature is very close, it is normal.
My sister and I just had the pleasure of staying 2 nights at the coconut grove 2bedroom apartment. The pictures depict it perfectly and the location cannot be beat (across the road from the beach, minutes walk to puerto Viejo centre, bars, restaurants etc). The kitchen is sufficient for making meals if you prefer to stay in and the wifi worked great. The guesthouse had plenty of hammocks and seats which were perfect for reading or relaxing. Heidi herself was friendly, informative and attentive as a host and had plenty of local knowledge which will assist with planning aspects of your daily activities. If you're looking for affordable, safe and enjoyable accommodation on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica I cannot recommend Heidi's guesthouse enough! Thank you so much for our delightful stay!
Heidi is the consummate travel host! When I was having challenges in setting up my shuttle transfer from San Jose to Puerto Viejo she took the lead and booked it for me! I could have stayed in the hostel but chose the privacy of the apartment as I was there for 28 days and have no regrets w/ this choice. The shower was huge and I never experienced a problem with a lack of hot water... waking up to my own private kitchen was also a blessing. the location is excellent as the town is literally just down the street but late night noise from the local bars and eateries was rarely a concern. If I ever needed assistance with any matter she was an excellent resource and if she couldn't address it personally she would direct me to the appropriate party no problem. The maid who came to clean daily was very efficient yet pleasant as well and Beckie, the on-sight maintenance man, could fix anything on the spot if need be. The house alarm system was also very reliable - this would be Lila the German Shepard, she was always available to keep company as she patrolled the grounds chasing off stray dogs and what not.
All in all life at the Coconut Grove Hostel was just what this newbie to global travel needed and I left Costa Rica felling relaxed and already looking forward to my return next year before I had even left!! All the best to you Heidi... see you sometime down the road soon I hope.
