  • We really enjoyed our stay, the house and location are perfect. Plenty of space for the 4 of us, and more than enough commodities to make you feel "home away from home". The pool, the bbq, the hammocks, and bikes available are all an added bonus. And Chris was a friendly and helpful host. I`d love to go back to Sàmara some time and, if I get the chance, I`d definitely stay at the Casa del Halcon again :)

  • We stayed at Chris's place for a few days at the very end of a 2 month CR trip.

The house looks great and is a nice size. The property is well maintained, the pool is perfect for small kids or just sitting in on a hot day. There's a little bbq/fire pit area. Sámara is a really nice little town. Very friendly, some good restaurants (the Mexican place has a troop of howler monkeys that live above it). The location is indeed pretty close to the beach, though we had to cut our trip short and only visited Playa Carillo (which is really, really pretty) so we didn't visit the closer beaches except to drive by and take a look. Chris is a great host.

The house was clean, and is really pretty. Chris mentioned it'd been recently redone, and it looks like it. Nice furniture and very attractive overall. I'd give the whole thing 5 stars except for a few things, some of which might just have been bad luck and timing. Though advertised, there was no hot water. Probably something that we just happened to hit at the wrong time between the heater breaking and getting repaired. Also, there were butter knifes and a giant cleaver. Nothing in between, though Chris probably would have got us something if we needed. (We had to leave early so it wasn't a big deal.)

The bigger issues were the insects, and I hate to dock a star for this because it might have largely been beyond Chris's (or anybody's) control, but the no-see-ums are horrible. I'm not sure if this is just a thing in Samara, or Guanacaste, or if it was the particular location of the house or something else (time of year, weather pattern, who knows). Further south in the country we didn't encounter them at all (though we did get other more dangerous arthropods like a kissing bug and a wandering spider).

Anyway, they're horrible, the bites themselves are like a tiny pin prick, which would be tolerable except that after a few days they start itching like crazy. And they didn't seem to be repelled by picaridin at all, so you'll need deet. Unfortunately, I didn't use deet because I didn't know they itched days after the bite, and I could tolerate the initial bites. But a few days later we all started itching and realized we'd accumulated hundreds of bites, and I realized how big a mistake it was not to put deet all over.

So in summary: It's a nice house in a really great town, but use deet or the no-see-ums will destroy you :)

  • Casa del halcón 2 was a great place to stay at! The value was very good, and the place was nice and clean. We had lots of space for a family of 4. The porch with a big table and 2 hammocks was a very nice place to relax and cool down.
The pool was refreshing and the vegetation offered privacy.
Chris lives right next door so it was very convenient if we had any questions. He was also there to help us out with a few things, like a dead car and booking a surfing class with a great teacher.
I would go back anytime. Pura vida !

  • My husband and I had a fabulous stay at the Casa de Halcon2! We had two friends with us and plenty of room for 4 adults. The pool was lovely although we did most of our swimming at the beach, it was so beautiful. Great setting with lots of wildlife, we saw a big iguana, an armadillo, many geckos and interesting birds right from our patio. The kitchen is well equipped if you want to cook at home but we ate out most of the time.
Chris was very helpful, would come by regularly to check in and make sure we were comfortable. He had great recommendations of restaurants and things to do nearby. He is a very friendly and personable host and a great resource.
Many fabulous restaurants in Samara! It's a short drive or bike ride to town and to beaches. Grocery store and great bakery just down the road. Samara is a small town but has all the amenities you need, very laid back. Always felt safe even when out walking around town at night.
Would definitely plan another stay here!

  • Home is where the heart is. And at Casa del Halcon in beautiful Samara, my husband and I felt lat home. Chris is a very caring, special soul who contributes a positive energy to this amazing place.

Don't hesitate to visit during the rainy season. I visited in August of 2013 and found sun and beach during the first part of the day and a refreshing rain - carrying with it the power to renew our spirit - during the later part of the day.

  • After staying in hostels for 1 week with 3 teenagers, it felt great to be at la Casa del Halcon 2. The place is comfortable even for 5, got a great kitchen and is very well decorated and comfortable. It's got a nice pool and is surrounded by trees and flowers. It's 5-10 mins drive to Samara's beach. The shower could us a little scrub, but that's from our North American standards ;)! It was a great stat!

  • We have just spent a month at Chris place in Samara, a beautiful and charming house right in the outskirts of the village. When we sum our stay up there are both good and less good stuff we want to mention. Lets start with the less good so we can round up with the positive!

    Less good:
The distance to the beaches. There are two beaches that are close, but they were hard for us to get to with two small children. Very steep and up-hill/down-hill. For us, with the kids, the easiest was to bike to Playa Samara which was about 10 min bike-ride, or a little bit longer if we wanted to hit the beach in the village of Samara.
The pool was really not that nice when we were there. It was very small and dirty. Chris talked about changing the pump-system of the pool which is really needed. We had looked forward to have a pool where we lived, but we ended up using the pool at the hotel Pacific Lodge about 5 min away instead. The pool was a disappointment...

Chris himself! A very nice and warm man who was very helpful to us whenever we needed (website hidden) Chris provided a baby-crib for us which was very appreciated!!
The two bikes that we borrowed from Chris during our whole stay. We also rented a small bike-waggon in Samara for our kids to ride in, so that worked out really well!!
The house is very nice, as is the interior design. Very stylish, yet simple Costa Rican touch. We liked it!
It also felt like a secure neighbourhood! It was close to the grocery store, a small café and the local pub.

All in all we had a good stay at Casa Del Halcon, so thank you Chris!

Hola My name is Chris Hawk (Most friends call me Hawk). I'm originally from Canada but have been traveling extensively for the past 18yrs. I moved to Samara in 2012 and am very happy with this choice. Samara is a wonderful town with an incredible vibe where the locals, ex-pats and tourists all mingle effortlessly. I am a certified hatha yoga instructor and was working with an addictions retreat center here before finding this amazing property. I am open to working with anyone that would like yoga, pranayama (yogic breathing) or meditation classes. Wishing you an amazing adventure in samara - HAWK
