I would appreciate it a lot if you can finish reading the description carefully before you contact me for Q&A. :)
A FREE cooking lesson (including guided tour of a nearby farmer's market) can be arranged if you are interested.
If you want home cooked dumplings/steamed buns for breakfast, please let me know in advance.
In the very center of Beijing. Yet a peaceful retreat in a city where tranquility is a luxury.
LOCATION: in the same neighborhood as the Red Capital Club, Crescent Moon and Da Dong Peking Duck Restaurant. These are top famous eat outs mentioned on most travel sites.
I have 4 guest houses located in the same double-courtyard (century old family property). The front yard and the back yard is connected by a small corridor.
I am a big fan of open space, sunshine and fresh air (in a polluted city like Beijing, this means good ventilation). You can be sure you will enjoy all these.
Each house is independently located in the yard. You won't hear people talking on the other side of a thin wall.
The double-room has doors both to the front yard and the back yard.
There is a 2-meter double-bed and a traditional Chinese woodcarving couch that can function as a single bed in the bigger room. And 2 single beds in the smaller room. A very comfortable camping bed is also available if there is a 6th person in your group.
You need to walk through the smaller room to go to the toilet and shower room.
This is a genuine Beijing neighborhood where daily life unfolds. Dong Si is one of Beijing’s oldest populated areas. Looking out on the terrace, you see modern glass buildings rising along the second loop of Beijing. Waves of time have been washing away traces of the traditional Beijing. Yet, in my neighborhood, things haven’t changed much in more than 60 years of Red China.
The location is to the east of famous tourist sites such as Nanluoguxiang, Houhai, Beihai Park, Jing Shan Park, the Forbidden City, the Drum Tower, etc. The famous food street (the ghost street) and infamous bargaining arena Ya Show market are both within a leisure walk.
It is within the 2nd Ring Road of Beijing, and just a short 5 to 10 minutes walk (depends on how fast you walk)away from 2 subway stations: Dong Si Shi Tiao (LINE 2) on the east and Zhang Zi Zhong Lu (LINE 5) on the west.
All the rooms listed have air conditioners, electric heaters, a TV and DVD player, electric water kettle, hair dryer, shampoo, shower gel, towel, soap, tooth paste, etc. The TV doesn't have signal since I don't watch Chinese TV at all. But you are more than welcome to check out my DVD collection.
There is a laundry room with a washing machine in the yard (sorry, no dryer). In winter, all the laundry dry over night if you hang them in front of the big heaters in your room. In summer, the sun or the air-con in your room will dry them pretty fast.
Toaster, fridge, microwave and electric cooker can be found in the common area.
I provide a mobile phone with local SIM card. As a world traveler, I understand what sense of security it can bring when you always have somebody to call when in a country you don't speak the language.
Banks, super market, pharmacy, massage salons (legit ones), fruits shops, varied restaurants, post office, train/flight ticket agencies, tea shops, bakeries, gym that offers different classes (yoga/belly dancing/pilate) in the evening, etc……Easy access to everything you may need in the neighborhood.
A map of Beijing and a print-out with brief introduction to around 20 restaurants in the neighborhoods (how to get there, what kind of food they serve, etc) will be waiting for you in the room when you check in.
Taxi from Beijing airport: RMB65 -75
Airport train + subway from Beijing airport: RMB27
Bus from Beijing station: RMB1
Subway from Beijing south station: RMB2
Taxi from Beijing West station: RMB40 -45
P.S. It's most suitable for parents with small kids or a group of friends or a couple who want a bigger space. You need to walk through the smaller room to reach the bathroom. So it may not be ideal for people who want privacy to share.
There will always be coffee/tea/soft drinks/cookies/toast/jam/peanut butter in the breakfast room. Feel free to grab a bite whenever you feel like it. It's on the house.

Staying with Cindy is an experience on its own, she is a wonderful host! Her place is in the middle of a very nice neighbourhood. The rooms are very clean, you have a (hard) comfy bed and a normal toilet to sit on, what more can a tourist wish for? I can only say we had a very nice time and if you come to Beijing, staying with Cindy is one of the best choices you can make!
We 5 were anxious to take a break from a tourist hotels and stay in a real family "hutong" neighborhood. (within walking distance of 2 of the excellent Metro system stops). It was a excellent experience to stay in a real Chinese home and neighborhood.
We thought it was a perfect blend of East meets West.
Cindy and Nick are excellent hosts and they go out of their way to make their guests feel comfortable. We enjoyed our conversations with them in their kitchen. Cindy & Nick's English is outstanding. We also really liked the driver that Cindy arranged to pick us up/ take us to the airport and also to the Great Wall.
We also appreciated that Cindy sent us information in advance of our stay that was very helpful!
Cindy was an excellent host before and throughout my family's visit to see me in Beijing. She was very helpful in providing letters of invitation for visa applications and was always quick in replying to my queries in the run up to my family's visit. My family thoroughly enjoyed their stay. The room was spacious but still very well heated in the middle of Beijing winter. They enjoyed Cindy's company and would stay with her again if coming back to Beijing.
cindy is a really good host - fun company and provides freshly ground coffee. the room was very warm and inviting
What a great weekend! Cindy and her family are wonderful hosts. Cindy's survival guide is the only way to survive Beijing--no joke! Very family friendly quiet place located in the heart of the city near many historical attractions. Cindy's recommendations of restaurants were right on and her help in hiring a driver, getting tickets for acrobats or even pizza when needed was invaluable. We will keep this place in the file for next time.
Heart of Beijing…literally! This was a hassle-free stay. First, please note that the other reviewers are accurate in their assessments. We had a marvellous time with Cindy and Nikos at their well-appointed house in Dongsi hutong. The best thing was we spent all of our nine days in Beijing with Cindy, rather than travelling the length and breadth of the country in a vain attempt to see and do as much as possible – that will have to wait for another trip! There truly is so much that can be done simply by basing yourself here…with the added advantage being you actually get to be recognised and known by the friendly locals around the hutong and in the restaurants – and friendly they are.
Cindy and Nikos are all they are cracked-up to be: welcoming, friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable, informative and helpful. And while Cindy is always available should you require her advice or support, she certainly encourages independence and adventure – then, if you get stuck, she can get it sorted. Equally, the initial and daily advice provided by Cindy with setting our itinerary was invaluable and meant we wasted very little time attempting things that were pretty much logistically impossible.
We stayed in the larger, family-sized apartment as it suited our need for a little more space, having been cramped-up in a Hong Kong hotel room. The space was perfect – it was large, clean, well-appointed and extremely warm…and this ‘warm’ welcome was greatly appreciated.
What did we find truly valuable: besides Cindy herself, it was her access to a very friendly driver! Even if you are the adventurous type and/or you are working to a tight budget, you should treat yourself to a driver for a day (or two, or more)…you will not regret doing so. Also, you should treat yourself to a driver airport pick-up/drop-off – it is only marginally dearer than a taxi and ensures you get to/from your location without hassle…which is really great, especially if it happens to be in the dark. However, the greatest value in using a driver (in our case, Tom) was that it minimised the time required getting from site to site…and those travelling times can be significant. It also meant that we could get to a couple or more sites in one day.
It certainly helped that for the entire nine days we were with Cindy the skies were clear and the sun shone – with only a very little wind on the first day. I know: the sun never shines in Beijing! Well, it did for us and that made it much easier to plan our days and for walking (and you can do a lot of walking). Finally, and after all of the walking and before moving to your next adventure, treat yourself to a local foot massage…you will be invigorated!
Thanks Cindy and Nikos for a great stay – highly recommended!

What fun! We had a great stay with Cindy and Nick. They were informative and helpful hosts in every way making our first visit to Beijing smooth and enjoyable. The arrival info and helping with transport was invaluable, and just getting to know them and the country was really enjoyable. The flat was perfect for our family and the neighbourhood is authentic Beijing. Thanks so much Cindy and Nick - will see you again surely. Dan, Manou, Eva & Sidney
Cindy rules! Making our reservation for our Beijing trip at Cindys place was the best we could do. The apartment was immaculate clean, nicely furnished and in perfect condition. Her house is furthermore perfectly located for short trips within Beijing as well as for trips to the Great Wall.
Cindy herself is even more amazing: prompt communication prior arrival and warm-hearted and helpful around the clock for all questions and needs. This is not airbnb - this is better than a first class hotel!
Thanks Cindy and Nick for everything! We will definitely be back and get some more fat ladies!!
