The Space

This is a real "hobbit house" -- and that means comfort, as any hobbit-follower knows! This is a charming listed cob and thatch cottage. It is a historic and unique property. 15 minutes from the spectacular beaches and coastal paths of Ceredigion, Wales.

Here is what a visitor says:

"One of the most beautiful weekend retreats we have ever had the privilege of staying in...we were totally taken back - what a beautiful place to stay - we felt right at home from the moment we walked in. Getting away from the hustle and bustle is enough, but knowing that you are staying in such an amazing piece of history is beyond words - thank you, we'll be back!" ~ Lisa & John from Manchester.

The cottage is one of the best surviving examples of an eighteenth century clom cottages in Wales. It is Grade II listed in recognition of its “outstanding architectural interest. “ The cottage was built around 1750, and although there have been alterations, the interior arrangement and many details are original to that time. The “crogloffts” are traditional sleeping platform that were once common in West Wales, as were wickerwork chimneys such as the one seen here.

The roof is thatched in wheatstraw, and along with the cottage in the next village, these are the only wheatstraw thatches left in Wales outside of a museum. The walls are protected with a traditional limewash and the oak crucks and roof structure are all original and untouched since the eighteenth century.

The kitchen has been renovated to a very high standard while keeping original features, like the huge slate sink and the oak countertop. More modern amenities include: dishwasher, microwave, washer/dryer, Kitchen-aid mixer, Magi-Mix food processor, and more. If you like to cook, this is the place! The cottage features copper pots and pans, Portmerion china for 6, bakeware, and a ton of other kitchen gadgets. There is a modern stove and oven. If you really want a challenge -- you can try your skills cooking in the cast iron stove which still exists in the hearth. There is an extensive library of cookbooks

The bathroom was originally the farm’s dairy. We preserved the huge slate slab which used to be used in butter making. The bath tub is double-ended for romantic bathing. A bathroom welcome pack is included.

The sitting room is very comfortable with a wood burning fireplace, Harman/kardon sound system for use with your iPod. There is also a games table with checkers, chess, and backgammon.

The backroom is called the “shop” because it used to be the tea room for the hamlet. It is now fitted out with a Tempur-pedic sofa bed, TV, DVD, internet. There is also a very nice selection of classic literature and local history books available.

The gardens are lovely at any time of the year. During the winter months there are 50 species of snowdrops.

Towels, bed linens, and table linens are included. There is an iron and ironing board.

The back garden has a table for 6 and a love seat. You are encouraged to cut the roses for your table settings and the house.

Short breaks are available. Please contact me directly if you wish to stay for less than 5 nights.

The house is situated in a small hamlet of houses. We are near to the beaches of ceredigion, Aberaeron (15 minutes), Llangranog (30 minutes) Lampeter, the Llanerchaeron estate, Aberystwyth (35 minutes) and lovely dining at Ty Mawr Mansion which has been awarded five stars from VisitWales. Paragliding and walking is popular in the area.

This property is co-located with another property that sleeps two, see Romantic Thatched Cottage- Wales. If booked together there is space for 8 persons with two bathrooms.

  • We had a fantastic time in a dream cottage. We were three people who used this property as a base to explore some parts of Wales. It was great coming back to the cottage after a day out. We had plenty of room, the facilities were great and staying at the cottage was an experience itself. I would definitely do that again and recommend it to all of my friends.
As I have seen the picture I thought this must be wonderful. I have to say that the picture on here won't ever be able to show how great it is in fact. I would say it is quirky and got a lot of style. Everything was perfect.

  • We stayed two weeks at Uchaf with four persons and had gorgeous holidays. Thanks so much, Melise!

We are planning to visit this amazing cottage next year again. Our little pug was with us at Uchaf and enjoyed the time, too.

Melise equiped the cottage with all you need: a dish washer, a washing machine, tv, wifi-internet, a KitchenAid, lots of typical Welsh shale-stone, many cookbooks, bone china and many pieces of high class furniture. There is definetly a lot of love in this cottage. Furthermore there's Petra - the very helpful and all-time available housekeeper of Uchaf.

We liked having breakfeast outside in the garden looking at the grazing sheeps and the hilly landscape in front of us.

We visited Lampeter, Aberaeron, New Quay, Aberystwyth and Tregaron. But all the days we were glad of coming back to the cottage.

If you like to go out for food: the best fish & chips you definetely get at New Celtic Pub in Aberaeron. You also should visit the Town Hall cafe in Lampeter for lunch. But we often used the kitchen's equipment and cooked for ourselves in the cottage. Laura left her best scones recipe in the guest book for future guests.

All in all we have to recommend Uchaf and its host Melise without any confinements. Our first Airbnb booking was great luck.

  • Amazing little piece of Welsh history! The cottage is beautifully restored and furnished to keep it's charm and character.
Melise is obviously a keen cook as the kitchen has all the mod cons for for baking including a kithen aid and magi mix plus a dishwasher to help with the clean up.
The cottage was beautiful and warm with radiators, heaters and a cute little fire place.
There was WiFi, TV and even better a massive collection of books, games and puzzles.
The house keeper was only a phone call away if we needed her and happy to help with any request. Melise was away but in constant text and email contact for when we needed her - a perfect host!
I would recommend this gorgeous cottage to anyone wanting to explore the fabulous Welsh countryside and coast. Melise was incredibly accommodation and kind.

  • What a superb place! My friends and I booked this cottage along with the annexe (also listed on airbnb), so we had the whole building to ourselves, and we had a wonderful stay. The cottage is really comfortable - and warm! The pictures give you a very good impression of what the place is like, but nothing prepares you for the feeling of comfort and peacefulness that you get when you're actually inside the place. The "crogloft" sleeping platforms are just wonderful. Melise is a very good host as well, with prompt and informative responses to emails. She runs a smooth operation from the other side of the Atlantic!
