About this listing
This property was recently featured by Christie Alsop on Ch 4. This is a real "hobbit house." That means comfort, as any hobbit-follower knows! Charming, Grade II listed, cob and thatch cottage. A place of retreat yet only 15 minutes to the coast.
"One of the most beautiful weekend retreats we have ever had the privilege of staying in...we were totally taken back - what a beautiful place to stay - we felt right at home from the moment we walked in. Getting away from the hustle and bustle is enough, but knowing that you are staying in such an amazing piece of history is beyond words - thank you, we'll be back!" ~ Lisa & John from Manchester.
This is the perfect place to step away from stress and retreat to a completely unique experience. Our situation provides guests with an excellent base to explore the many local attractions and the Coastal Path. Ffynnon Oer is not too far (nor too close) to the coastal villages. We are “just right.” By staying at Ffynnon Oer you will avoid the tourist crowds while being able to dip into the beach villages (or the water) as you please.
Ffynnon Oer is also not too isolated. Our guests enjoy the fact that Ffynnon Oer is a “hot spot” (compared to other holiday locations). We have reliable internet with wi-fi so you can sit on the sofa and plan your next adventure.
On top of all its more practical advantages, the cottage itself will be one of the highlights of your trip. Ffynnon Oer is one of the best surviving examples of an eighteenth century clom cottages in Wales. It is Grade II listed in recognition of its “outstanding architectural interest. “ The cottage was built around 1750, and although there have been alterations, the interior arrangement and many details are original to that time. The “crogloffts” are traditional sleeping platforms that were once common in West Wales, as were wickerwork chimneys such as the one seen here. The oak crucks and roof structure are all original and untouched since the eighteenth century.
Our gardens are lovely any time of the year. Even in winter, there are over 20 different varieties of snowdrops. The front of the house is planted with a rose and herb garden. Please cut the roses and herbs for your enjoyment.
The kitchen has been renovated to a very high standard while keeping original features, like the huge slate sink and the oak countertop. More modern amenities include: dishwasher, microwave, washer/dryer, Kitchen-aid mixer, Magi-Mix food processor, and more. If you like to cook, this is the place! The cottage features copper pots and pans, Portmerion china for 6, bakeware, and a ton of other kitchen gadgets. There is a modern stove and oven. If you really want a challenge -- you can try your skills cooking in the cast iron stove which still exists in the hearth. There is an extensive library of cookbooks
The bathroom was originally the farm’s dairy. We preserved the huge slate slab which used to be used in butter making. The bath tub is double-ended for romantic bathing. A bathroom welcome pack is included.
The sitting room is very comfortable with a wood burning fireplace, Harman/kardon sound system for use with your iPod. There is also a games table with checkers, chess, and backgammon.
The backroom is called the “shop” because it used to be the tea room for the hamlet. It is now fitted out with a Tempur-pedic sofa bed, TV, DVD, internet. There is also a very nice selection of classic literature and local history books available.
Towels, bed linens, and table linens are included. There is an iron and ironing board.
The back garden has a table for 6 and a love seat.
Short breaks are available.
The house is situated in a small hamlet of houses. We are near to the beaches of ceredigion, Aberaeron (15 minutes), Llangranog (30 minutes) Lampeter, the Llanerchaeron estate, Aberystwyth (35 minutes) and lovely dining at Ty Mawr Mansion which has been awarded five stars from VisitWales. Paragliding and walking is popular in the area.

Our thatch insurance does not allow candles or smoking anywhere in the house. If you bring a grill please use it as far away from the house as possible and watch for sparks.
