Our guests say: "This is paradise!" when they stay at The Rose Cottage on our horse farm. Located in sunny Deer Harbor in a very private valley on a dead end road, you can watch our mustangs play in the meadows below, or the deer munching apples from our 100 year old trees. Our snug cottage has an old fashioned feeling with wood floors, wainscoating, high ceilings, lots of sunshine and walls of windows. Yet it is modern, warm and has high speed internet for those who are working or need to stay in touch.
This one bedroom cottage offers a queen sized bed with down comforters and 100% cotton linens. There is also a single bed (sleigh bed) in the dining room. The fully equipped kitchen has a double sink, gas range, fridge, table for dining. Windows surround the living room offering views in three directions and let in lots of sunshine. Furnished with couch, chairs and TV with a DVD player. (Bring your own DVD's) The bathroom is compact with shower, sink and washer/dryer.
Adjacent to a Waterfowl Refuge for extraodinary bird watching, you may see owls, hawks, eagles, songbirds, migrating waterbirds, finches, swallows, herons right from the patio. The round brick patio surrounded by mature lavender and flowering herbs is a great place for the evening barbeque and a glass of wine, while watching the sunset.
Walk to the nearby Deer Harbor Marina to the beach, or to go whale watching or kayaking at the Deer Harbor dock. Quiet roads for walking right out the door, and great hiking on nearby Turtleback Preserve.
In Deer Harbor you can dine watching the sun set at the Deer Harbor Inn. Eastsound offers a variety of eateries, some of our favorites are the Asian Kitchen for lunch, Ship Bay Oyster House for dinner - both offer excellent seafood. At the far end of Orcas you can find the Doe Bay Cafe- run by a 5 star chef from NYC, or grab some crabcakes and blackberry pie at the Olga Cafe. For more about Orcas visit my blog: LifeOnOrcasIsland.
Love Horses? A recent guest had this to say: ". I would HIGHLY suggest you take some horse lessons during your stay, it will feed your soul, and Kate is a master at her craft in her ability to connect with the horses." See more at: Natural Horsemanship On Orcas. We offer weekend workshops, private lessons for horse handling skills and riding.
The entire cottage with patio/garden/lawn area. Walking trails nearby, bikes, the chairs down by the bird preserve.

It's so beautiful, peaceful and quiet! Birdsong is the first thing you'll hear. Horses are wonderful to watch, hummingbirds, eagles, swallows every day. Flowers blooming the scent of lavender, a feeling of abundance in the earth. Just a short walk to see the water and snow capped mountains. A waterfowl preserve out the kitchen window!
FLY direct from Lake Union in Seattle to Deer Harbor. We can meet you at the dock and bring you to the cottage. A day long bus ticket is $15. Easy Walk to the Marina - about a mile. Driving to Orcas? Washington State now has a Ferry reservation system. Be sure to book a ticket in advance! Please note: GPS does not work well on Orcas and cell phones are spotty.

Rose Cottage was charming! So peaceful and quiet... A wonderful place for respite. Loved the horses and bird watching!
Both Ken and Kate's cottage and land were very tranquil. In Deer Harbor it's about a 25 minute drive to town and a 25 minute walk to the Deer Harbor Marina. Ken gave us great advice on things to do on Orcas. We ended up going on a whale watching tour where we got to see humpbacks along with many other animals, it was amazing. Glad we got to visit and that they were able to take us in.
I absolutely loved the cottage. It was the perfect place to chill out and enjoy the serenity of Orcas Island. Our lives are very busy, so I greatly appreciate Kate's flexibility and the privacy the cottage allows.
The rose cottage was wonderful! It's bigger than I realized, and bright and beautiful. The location is great and pretty secluded (but nothing is terribly far from anything else on Orcas if you have a car), and right near a marsh. We slept to frog sounds and woke up to birds. It was a very relaxing place to be--I wish we could have stayed more than one night!
Kate was a great host--very responsive and helpful. We didn't meet her, but she was nearby in the main house on the property if we had needed her.
We loved staying at the Rose Cottage! Although we kept busy enough not to end up meeting Kate, she made our stay so enjoyable with her lovely notes and warm spirit. After spending so much time in the city, this was a much-needed fresh-air retreat.
We loved being greeted inside with vases filled with fresh flowers & Rosemary. We enjoyed so many things: your French press for our morning coffee; your China teapot & cups for hot tea & honey in the evenings; comfy bed & warm blankets; washer/dryer. My daughter especially loved walking down to the bird/water fowl preserve in the mornings & taking beautiful photos. The surrounding area is lovely, green, cool & filled with only the silence of nature, birds chirping & crickets at night. Thank you for helping make this the most peaceful and relaxing vacation we have had.
