Lovely cottage with small garden

House - Private room · 1st Avenue, Johannesburg, Gauteng 2109, South Africa

The Space

Our cottage lies in Auckland Park in Johannesburg, just a 50m walk from the lively and bustling 7th street in Melville. The cottage has its own little entrance and garden, separated from the main house. The room to let is facing the small court in front of the gate. The cottage also has a small living area and dining area, both facing the well equipped kitchen from different angles. The bathroom has a lovely old bathtub, and the shower - very classic South African style - is outside (but roofed and secure from curious views). Makes for very nice showers in summer, but in winter you'd rather take a bath :-).

Depending on the date you book, you will either have the cottage for yourself, or will share with us (Jan and Anne). The master bedroom that is used by us is not included in the cottage rental. If we are there, you are welcome to share breakfast with us.

Again, depending on the date you book and the size of your car, you may have access to a secure parking space (off-street, roofed)

Free WiFi - smoking allowed only outside cottage!

Please note: Our neighbours have two (friendly) dogs, who are often in the open courtyard we share with the main house - not in the cottage's own courtyard which is closed off. But you need to cross the shared courtyard to get out on the street, so please let us know if you are afraid of dogs.
Also, we normally don't provide towels but can make a plan if you let us know in advance that you need one.

  • Morning, Jan an' Anne!
Your description of your place is accurate, from my point of view, thank goodness it is not a 5-star hotel! It is a really convenient place from which to engage with Melville, Joziburg and to get to Soweto, as the Aukland Park line of Rea Vaya leads both there and into town. Of course, for those with a car those public transport connections are not an issue.
Also your welcome is the best kind of '3-star-hotel' welcome: uncomplicated, friendly, locally knowledgeable and balanced. I could not have found a more suitable place for my five-week stay, or nicer people to have stayed with.

  • This was my best airbnb experience to date. Jan and Anne have always been truly helpful and really easy to communicate with throught our stay. The cottage is quite safe and their neighbours are very nice people! We had everything we needed at their place, and I can recommend them without any hesitation. Thank you very much guys for having us!

  • Jan and Anne, I want to thank your for the great time. You really live in a great area with the shops and restaurants of Mellvile walking distance away! In sort, great location and great hosts. Nothing to add

  • Even if we arrived very late the fist day, waking Jan and Anne up (sorry again about that), they have been very nice and helpul. The flat is safe and cosy with a lovely garden; the area is nice and central. I highly recommand it.

  • I had an awesome time staying with Anne & Jan. Going to South Africa for the first time, I didn't really know what to expect or how to get from place to place, but I felt I was in safe hands.

They were great with emails and communication, made me feel welcome during my entire stay, the place was clean and tidy, and it was a really inspiring and sharing kind of atmosphere. They even invited me out to their Zulu language class, which is a pretty unique experience for me! I feel that people like Jan and Anne are an asset to Airbnb.

    Thanks again guys!!

I am a communications consultant, sharing a cosy cottage with my wife Anne (who is working in the same industry). We like to bike and ride our motorbikes (two wheels rule!!), get out into nature or cook together with friends. We don´t travel as much as we would like to, but we`re working on it! We think that AirBnB is a little more than a cheap alternative to a hotel. Please consider this before writing to us.
