We are in Cobden IL area amidst orchards wineries, forests. One-acre organic farm with two-bedrooms/baths nonsmoking cottage, 4 season vegetable-herb-flower-fruit beds and food forest. Our vegan hospitality is open and inclusive. Se habla espanol!
This space provides seclusion for a getaway, honeymoon, ceremonies, and/or a base for family events and to explore the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, parks, and more.
We have two rooms to rent within the cottage: a larger room with queen sized gel bed and attached bath ($94 per night) and a smaller room with a full-sized bed and bathroom across the hall ($79 per night). Unrelated people staying in both rooms will pay the per night rate for each room: family members may rent the smaller room for half price. Renters may request a private stay with no other people.
On the land, we have kitchen garden beds and permaculture food forest for our orchard trees, blueberry & berry bushes, strawberries, blackberry & raspberry brambles, and native wildflowers. We share these fruits and vegetables with our guests. We grow four seasons during the year and have added a mobile high tunnel (greenhouse) to grow tomatoes, chiles, cucumbers, peppers, and eggplant during summer months; greens and root vegetables during the winter months. Other crops include garlic, potatoes, edamame, greens, squash and melons. During your stay, we would be glad to share our experiences, foods, and plans for developing our organic farm and food forest. By prior arrangement with the hosts, guests can receive $10 per hour credit ($20 per day) for supervised farm duties such as watering, weeding, picking, mulching as needed and directed.
Our large front deck with roof is a good place to enjoy the garden views, hills, and have a meal and/or enjoy a drink. Deck includes ADA ramp. Full-service kitchen and dining area in one large have local hiking, flower, and day trip guides. Living room has door to porch. Yoga mats. Gas grill. WI-FI. TV with DVD viewing only. Good selection of DVDs.
Plant-based vegan breakfasts and other meals available (gluten-free, raw options), but not included in lodging price. Our breakfasts feature nutrient dense fruit smoothies made with local fruit, nut milks and greens. We provide mini loaves of cinnamon, cranberry walnut breads or other grains on request. We cater plant-based meals for one or two up to 15 people for eating on our front porch, stay-in lunches or suppers, pizzas (vegan & gluten-free), vegan tacos y other mexican dishes, portable wine trail tiffins and more by Vegan Fusion trained teacher, Kathy Ward. For example, our wine trail meal can include a soup and/or Salad Niçoise (new potatoes, green beans, hummus, greens), multigrain baguette, vegan cheese ball, crudites, and brownie bites. Menus available on request and meals can be prepared with 48 hours notice. She can share recipes, menus, and strategies for plant-based and gluten-free cooking, baking, and living.
We had our first Farm to Table lunch in March featuring local foods and gourmet vegan fusion cooking and gluten-free baking. In June, we had a sold-out supper (Spanish paella y tapas). In September, we hosted a fall harvest supper (corn soup, watermelon-arugula salad, ratatouille, polenta-black rice casserole, sherried mushroom beans, apple cobbler y vanilla ice cream)---all vegan and gluten-free. Our final farm to table meal for 2014: a brunch on 7 December featuring Indian-Bangladeshi foods with locally sourced vegetables. In 2015, we will have four quarterly meals. We source foods-fruits from our farm, nearby farms, and farmers' markets and vegan fusion menus feature seasonal recipes.
Our cottage is located in quiet area amidst the Southern Illinois-Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and a van tour can be reserved with Shawnee Shuttle for up to six people. Shawnee National Forest, Giant City State Park, and River to River trails (hiking, rock climbing, and horseback riding) nearby. The Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour (Zipline) just opened nearby and people showing proof of stay at LCL will receive $10 off Tour fees. Location is excellent for birding, butterflies, wildflowers and road biking. Tunnel Hill Bike Trail is 45-60 minutes away. Nearby lakes (Little Grassy & Devil's Kitchen) and wetlands (Cache River) provide opportunities for kayaking and other water activities. The neighborhood is mainly farm land and horses. Many sustainable farms, including several organic farms, in the area. Two weekend farmers' markets in Carbondale during spring-fall. Carbondale high school hosts a winter's farmers market from beginning of November into April. Ask us for more information on these and summer markets in Cobden y Anna.
Restaurants such as the Yellow Moon Cafe, Taqueria Pequena, and Palace Pizza are located in nearby Cobden, around 8 miles from La Colina Linda. The Yellow Moon and Old Feed Store often host local music events. Anthill Gallery, Alligator & Blue Fox, Southpass Beads and other local stores sell local art and collectibles. Carbondale, Illinois and Southern Illinois University (SIUC), Neighborhood Coop, Pita Alley (west Carbondale and Murdale shopping center), Common Grounds (coffee+) and New Kahala (Chinese) [on Grand Ave/Wall Street] are 20-25 minutes away. Kiki's coffee on Main Street in Anna is another place for coffee and music. These places have reliable vegetarian and some vegan options for coffee, takeaway and more. If you are traveling on I-57 to and from La Colina Linda, Thai D at the Marion Mall has the best Thai food in the area and vegan friendly (across from Dillards in a strip mall).
Renters have access to full kitchen, living room, laundry facilities and seasonal harvests.
Interaction with guests
We greet guests upon arrival and deliver breakfasts and any other meals if requested. If guests would like a farm tour, that is available. Some times during the growing seasons, we may need to do some farm work or watering (as unintrusively as possible....we don't use machines). We can arrange supervised farm work @$10 per hour for up to $20 per for our seasonal ongoing tasks such as planting, watering, weeding, picking, moving the high tunnel (2x per year).

We have guide books for day trips and hikes in the area, flowers, birds, and bio-intensive/organic growing and can provide info on various bike routes, too. Our menus, recipes, and food options available on request.
La Colina Linda Farm and B & B
1) First of all, please enjoy your stay at the farm and cottage!
2) Next, please conserve running water as the system is based on a cistern. There is sufficient water for showers, clothes washing, dishwashing etc., but avoid leaving water running from faucet. For drinking, use water cooler or Britta filtered water in refrigerator. Coffee and ice will taste better with filtered water.
Use electric teapot to heat filtered water for any of the various teas provided. Coffee is freshly roasted locally (Jen’s Joe).
3) Toilets are water-saving so button on left uses less water to flush than button on right, which is used when more water is needed for flush.
4) Place dirty dishes in dishwasher after rinsing and run when necessary. Soap is under kitchen sink.
5) Store all food either in blonde cabinet or in refrigerator.
6) Recycling is important to the sustainability of the farm. Please place all plant-based food scraps, paper towels, dryer lint, tea bags, coffee filters, etc. in the stainless steel container on counter. Plastic and cans can be left at the cottage for the recycling center.
7) Respect the vegetable, herb and flowerbeds. Reach into the beds to observe or pick without stepping on the double dug beds. We are creating a sponge-like texture for the benefit of the soil and plants. In the forest garden, step only on the grassy areas.
8) You are welcome to eat food from the garden during your stay, but pick only those things that have been designated.
9) To checkout, leave keys on table and lock lower lock from inside on both doors.

Guests at our B & B will stay in a quiet beautiful area and a working organic farm and orchard. Atmosphere is relaxed and casual.
Kathy is a Vegan Fusion certified teacher and can provide plant-based meals and wine trail lunches from around the world based in part by what we grow at LCL farm and local CSAs-Coop (organic, sustainable). Gluten-free and raw options available. We can cater luncheons on our front porch (up to 15 people) . We can advise on other local dining options and day trips. Our food options have been shaped by Kathy's travels in Bangladesh, India, Great Britain,New Zealand, Australia, Honduras, and Puerto Rico and Jeri's travels to Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico.
