The Space

This space provides seclusion for a getaway, honeymoon, ceremonies, and/or a base for family events and to explore the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, parks, and more.

We have two rooms to rent within the cottage: a larger room with queen sized gel bed and attached bath ($94 per night) and a smaller room with a full-sized bed and bathroom across the hall ($79 per night). Unrelated people staying in both rooms will pay the per night rate for each room: family members may rent the smaller room for half price. Renters may request a private stay with no other people.

On the land, we have kitchen garden beds and permaculture food forest for our orchard trees, blueberry & berry bushes, strawberries, blackberry & raspberry brambles, and native wildflowers. We share these fruits and vegetables with our guests. We grow four seasons during the year and have added a mobile high tunnel (greenhouse) to grow tomatoes, chiles, cucumbers, peppers, and eggplant during summer months; greens and root vegetables during the winter months. Other crops include garlic, potatoes, edamame, greens, squash and melons. During your stay, we would be glad to share our experiences, foods, and plans for developing our organic farm and food forest. By prior arrangement with the hosts, guests can receive $10 per hour credit ($20 per day) for supervised farm duties such as watering, weeding, picking, mulching as needed and directed.

Our large front deck with roof (email hidden) to enjoy the garden views, hills, and have a meal and/or enjoy a drink. Deck includes ADA ramp. Full-service kitchen and dining area in one large room.We have local hiking, flower, and day trip guides. Living room has door to porch. Yoga mats. Gas grill. WI-FI. TV with DVD viewing only. Good selection of DVDs.

Plant-based vegan breakfasts and other meals available (gluten-free, raw options), but not included in lodging price. We can cater plant-based meals for one or two up to 15 people for eating on our front porch, stay-in dinners, portable wine trail tiffins and more by Vegan Fusion trained teacher, Kathy Ward. Menus available on request and meals can be prepared with 48 hours notice. She can share recipes, menus, and strategies for plant-based and gluten-free cooking, baking, and living.

We had our first Farm to Table lunch in March featuring local foods and gourmet vegan fusion cooking and gluten-free baking. Our latest meals was a sold-out supper on 22 June (Spanish tapas theme); our next schedule meal will be on 21 September and a December lunch. We source foods-fruits from our farm, nearby farms, and farmers' markets.

Our cottage is located in quiet area amidst the Southern Illinois-Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and a van tour can be reserved with Shawnee Shuttle for up to six people. Shawnee National Forest, Giant City State Park, and River to River trails (hiking, rock climbing, and horseback riding) nearby. The Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour (Zipline) just opened nearby and people showing proof of stay at LCL will receive $10 off Tour fees. Location is excellent for birding, butterflies, wildflowers and road biking. Tunnel Hill Bike Trail is 45-60 minutes away. Nearby lakes (Little Grassy & Devil's Kitchen) and wetlands (Cache River) provide opportunities for kayaking and other water activities. The neighborhood is mainly farm land and horses. Many sustainable farms, including several organic farms, in the area.

Restaurants such as the Yellow Moon Cafe, Taqueria Pequena, and Palace Pizza are located in nearby Cobden, around 8 miles from La Colina Linda. The Yellow Moon and Old Feed Store often host local music events. Anthill Gallery, Alligator & Blue Fox, Southpass Beads and other local stores sell local art and collectibles. Carbondale, Illinois and Southern Illinois University (SIUC), Neighborhood Coop, and Longbranch Cafe are 20 minutes away.

Check In
  • The LCL Farm B & B (email hidden) to stay. Jeri & Kathy were friendly, accommodating, and attentive hosts. The house and amenities were all easily accessible and in clean condition. The surrounding property grounds are absolutely gorgeous.

  • We very much enjoyed our stay at LCL Farm. The house is clean, tidy, and comfortable and the country/farm setting is very relaxing.

Kathy and Jeri were very kind hosts. Kathy spent a great deal of time with us and was very patient with our young children (age 8 and 6). She let the kids help plant squash and watermelon and also utilized them to water plants. Kathy gave my wife a lot of great advice for her gluten-free diet.

  • We had a short stay, but everything was very nice. The breakfast was a little pricey for what it was—two mini muffins and a smoothie made the night before. They were both very nice, though.

  • This is a really special place to visit - quiet country home surrounded by trees, flowers, and organic produce. Jeri and Kathy were kind and accommodating, with interesting backgrounds and experiences to share from around the world! LCL Farm is a must if you are traveling through southern Illinois! Honestly, one of the most beautiful areas in the country.

  • We enjoyed our stay at Jeri and Kathy's country cottage. With two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, it was just the right balance between cozy and comfortable for four humans and a dog.

The stars at night were beautiful! There is less light pollution out in the country, so the stars come out clearly. Dusk came early, and the cold December air made for lovely sunsets.

We enjoyed staying on a small farm and looking at the crops out the front windows. Kathy gave us a diagram of the beds and plantings, so we were able to identify the different plants and trees they are growing.

The only thing that was a little surprising was the presence of mice. I gather it's not unusual for farms to have mice (what with being surrounded by foodstuffs), but as a city girl, I was unprepared.

We had a nice time in southern Illinois. From the prettiness of the countryside to the convenience of Carbondale (which has yummy restaurants as well as big box stores for shopping if you're so inclined), it was a good stay at Kathy and Jeri's place.

  • Kathy's and Jeri's organic farm (email hidden) to stay. The house is very clean and comfortable. They have great wireless Internet which was very important to me. Staying there is like staying in a great park as it's right on the edge of Giant City State Park. The night sky is just gorgeous in this very rural setting.
Donna and I are vegans and Kathy made us a great Thanksgiving vegan dinner. It had several delicious courses with enough for two days of leftovers. Their house is very quiet (email hidden) to sleep or just relax. We look forward to a return visit in the summer or fall. Thanks again, Kathy and Jeri, for a great time!

  • Jeri and Kathy's place was perfect! They were so accommodating to prepare the house for us with only a few hour's notice, even leaving treats for us upon our arrival. The farm was beautiful and located in a lovely rural area, but within close reach of restaurants, coffee shops, and unique, locally-owned shops. Makanda was a quaint delight, and Carbondale provided all the supplies we needed throughout our stay. Sadly, we did not get to meet Jeri or Kathy, but all of their communication was prompt and lovely. Hopefully, we can return to meet them in person!

  • Jeri was very responsive and communicative in advance of--and during--our stay. The place was just as described. It's in a lovely setting minutes outside a tiny historic town (Makanda) and in the beautiful wooded hills around Giant City Park. We had the queen bedroom with attached bath--it was extremely comfortable. The grounds are lovely, rural and quiet. We saw rabbits and squirrels and birds including a hummingbird at the kitchen window. Full kitchen with all the utensils you need. Some beautiful rustic furniture pieces. This is a simple, cozy, very quiet and lovely place to spend a few days and get away from everything. We also purchased the muffins and smoothies that came in addition to the coffee, apples and chocolate that seemed to be included with the place. Next time we want to spend a night or more around Shawnee National Forest, this will be our home base.

    October 2013
  • We had a great time in Cobden! The property was beautiful, and the breakfast was yummy. The garden looks wonderful; we'd love to come back and see how it looks in spring or summer.

  • What a treat! Quiet, relaxing and well located. We really enjoyed reading and recovering on the front porch. Close to hiking, biking and fun Canopy Zip Line. Kitchen was well appointed in the house for cooking and there are good restaurants and wineries within close distance.
Beautiful organic gardens made for fun bird and bee watching from front porch.
Jeri and Kathy were good hosts and easy to work with. The beautiful homemade soaps for showering were a treat and local honey and jam a taste treat. They provide organic breakfast (donuts, muffins, and smoothies) for $10.00 pp which we enjoyed. Did I mention the house was clean as a whistle! It was a treat to find this gem and we look forward to further explore this beautiful part of the state from this comfortable house.
