This is a great place to stay and Denis was a wonderful host. The apartment itself is located within walking distance of the 'night life' of Kona. This includes cafes, restaurants, live music places and gift shops.
It's very clean and has a great view of the ocean. Denis was a good a host as he could have been. One day we went out snorkeling and he offered us his equipment so we didn't have to purchase our own.
The apartment is filled with lovely pieces of art work and has a very warming feel to it.
I would highly recommend staying here if you intend on spending some time on the west coast of the island.
Denis is an excellent host. From start to finish he made my stay both comfortable and enjoyable. He was also really friendly and generous. In fact, he made dinner for us on two occasions and offered a light breakfast for each morning as well (fruit, toast, coffee etc). The room was comfortable and clean and there was a private bathroom for me as well which was great. The place is very centrally located to everything you'll need while staying in Kona, which is perfect for travellers without a car as many of the other listings in the area are farther out and public transit in the area is spotty. I highly recommend visitors to the area stay with Denis!
Denis was very welcoming and polite . Had a wonderful time using their space.
As other reviewers have stated...I have never felt more welcome and at home than at at Denis and Vidal's place. Vidal was out of town so I did not get to meet him, however, Denis went above and beyond trying to make my stay as comfortable as possible. I became extremely ill during my stay and Denis offered to pick up anything I needed and even gave me a ride to the Urgent Care Center one of the nights. I could not have had a better host. The room/apartment was exactly as described and how it looks in the photos. I have no complaints and will definitely be going back as soon as I can get some more time off from work. Thank you!
I was very welcome in Vidal's and Denis place. When I arrived I received a selfmade fresh flower lei and every morning I was welcomed with a wonderful Papaya and decorations of flowers. In the evening Vidal was cooking and invited me to join him for dinner. He is a real good cook!
I requested to be picked up at the airport for only $20 and Vidal greeted me on time with a lei that he had made himself. When I got to the apartment, that looked exactly like the pictures there was dinner waiting for me. Vidal showed me around the apartment and gave me a key to come and go as I pleased. Every morning there was breakfast for me on the table and I was always invited to dinner where I met their friends from all over the world with lots of laughter. Both Vidal and Dennis are excellent cooks and every vegetarian dish they prepared was delicious with quality presentation. They were also helpful when I had questions about the area and Dennis even invited me to do yoga with him. They really do live in the downtown area of Kona within walking distance and a view of the ocean. I was traveling on my own for the first time and so naturally I was anxious/apprehensive, but I couldn't have had a better experience. I felt safe and cared for. My trip would not have been the same without them and hopefully I have made long-lasting friendships. Vidal made me another lei the day of my departure and it was bittersweet saying goodbye because like other reviews I have read...You met as strangers and left as friends. I would definitely not stay anywhere else in Kona!
My stay with Denis and Vidal went way beyond my expectations! I honestly felt as though I was reuniting with old friends, rather than staying with two people that had until now been strangers.
The entire apartment shows an appreciation for beauty, and provides a warm and calming atmosphere. The walls are adorned with Denis's paintings, with employ a bright color palette, and radiate joy and a love of nature. The balcony allows you to take in the sunshine and breezes of Kailua-Kona, and is frequented by adorable gold dust day geckos, attracted by the jam left out by my hosts.
My room was spotless, and the bed was comfortable. The guest bathroom was very clean, and a variety of toiletries were provided.
One of the highlights of my stay was Denis's cooking. I myself am a carnivore, but am happy to eat a well-prepared vegetarian meal. Denis used only fresh ingredients, mostly local, and employed flavors inspired by his many trips to India. Be sure to ask for his quinoa breakfast porridge which, in addition to being delicious, helped power me through several hours of hiking later that day! I was always invited to breakfast and dinner, even if my hosts were having friends over.
Denis and Vidal are also engaging conversationalists, and I learned a lot about the area and its history from them. They were always happy to give recommendations, and then eager to hear about my activities after the fact.
I can only hope that they will still have an Airbnb listing on my next trip to Kailua-Kona!
