Zilker Retreat~5 min to Downtown!

House - Entire home/apt · Treadwell Street, Austin, TX 78704, United States

The Space

This is a backyard studio, the Zilker Retreat, in the very BEST location in Zilker Pak within 1/2 mile from DOWNTOWN AUSTIN!!!

The Zilker Retreat can be found by entering the backyard fence (on the left side of the property beyond the driveway) which brings you to the backyard. The entrance to the Zilker Retreat is a pair of french doors welcoming you to a wonderful 450 square foot efficiency full of vintage items, reclaimed antiques, and stained glass windows. There are 2 other houses on this property, The Enchanting Zilker Cottage up front (see that listing for details) and the detached Backyard Bungalow (long term resident in place) on the far south end of the property. A huge bonus...you have use of the washer and dryer within your property located in the kitchen...detergent not included, though...this particular property is the only one with its own private washer/dryer which is nice. Zilker Retreat is perfectly suited for one to two occupants and, unfortunately, pets are not permitted because I have 4 beautiful lady chickens free roaming in the yard:) If you're interested in any fresh eggs, send me an email before your stay and I can arrange for an egg or two to be waiting inside your refrigerator or my Dad can personally arrange for this, as well, as he takes pride and care of my chickens.

Parking for your vehicle is available on the private driveway to the left of the house (1 car only please). You can look forward to staying so close to downtown but in a safe and cool Zilker residence. Best of both worlds.

The following are some details about your Zilker Retreat:

Bedroom:
Enjoy this private loft bedroom with reclaimed wide pine wood floors (taken from a Smithville, Texas teardown), reclaimed fence wood used as the head board to the queen bed, fluffy topper, comforter with 100% cotton duvet cover, Egyptian cotton linens, and WiFi internet. Important note...The only way to the loft bedroom area is to go up these stairs (pictured). I wanted to achieve a private and secluded feeling for the bedroom. Incidentally, it has pretty steep stairs up to the loft and a very low ceiling up there (3 feet at the lowest point and 4 feet at the highest point). I want everyone to take this into consideration and determine if that would be desirable (as opposed to all one level, ease of comfort, etc).

Bathroom:
The bathroom has satillo tile floor, a full bathtub/shower (if you're tall...not a problem...high ceiling), Bath and Body antibacterial hand soap, lotion, shower gel, Yardley soap, shower cap, and comfy all cotton towels also provided. (We recommend you bring beach towels for off site use).

Kitchen:
The kitchen is petite, efficient, and full of vintage and reclaimed material including the 4 foot long 1928 farmhouse sink, vintage sewing machine drawers, and antique knick- knacks I picked up in France. New mid-size refrigerator, and new petitie 4 burner gas stove. The kitchen also has a coffee maker, coffee bean grinder, blender, kettle, pots/pans, and dishes.

Living room:
I have a comfortable Pottery Barn Charleston slip cover sofa with plenty of room to relax with your laptop or read a great book. There is a 19 inch flat screen tv with cable. I also have a pair of gorgeous 1940's reclaimed glass french doors which bring a wonderful amount of bright light into the living room. There are antique stained glass windows everywhere as this is by far my favorite type of window.

Backyard: Pretty large backyard with 4 chickens running around during day hours (Pearl, Wilhemina, Ginger, Beatrice). I'm still working on the backyard landscape as this is a work in progress. There is an organic vegetable garden my Dad tends to on the south end of the property. In addition, Sir William's Guesthouse (my Dad's property...his name is William) is also located about 20 to 30 feet due south on the property. Dad's as authentic as the word, "hippie" gets...he defines it. He offers free music lessons on just about any instrument pretty much 7 days a week...he's devoted his life to this. Incidentally, the vegetable garden and music lessons are optional and free but just thought I would let you know in case this interests you! If you're looking for an authentic Zilker Park/Austin experience...this property is it!

Location:
This house is in Zilker, a residential neighborhood in south-downtown Austin that adjoins Zilker Park, 351 acres on the Colorado River. Within the park is Barton Springs, a large, spring fed swimming pool. The nearest commercial corridor, South Lamar Boulevard, is one block away, and has many restaurants, coffee shops, and music venues. About a mile away, there’s South Congress Avenue, a strip lined with restaurants, bars, vintage shops and stores like Allens Boots, which carries over 4,000 pairs of cowboy boots, along with hats and pearl-button shirts.

Walk/Hike/Bike/Explore ~
If you book a stay here (I can't emphasize this enough) please consider walking/running/biking this area as it offers incredible homes to admire, the famous Hike and Bike Trail on Town Lake, Zilker Park, Barton Springs Pool, Umlauf Sculpture Gardens, Botanical Gardens, restaurants galore (including the famous "Uchi" sushi restaurant 1 block down the street), Alamo Drafthouse, etc, etc, etc. This is a very cool and historical area of town and I encourage you to take advantage of this location. If you are bringing your bike(s), please feel free to leave them inside your house :)

PARKING: There is a private driveway for your use...1 car only please.

TRANSPORTATION: There is also public transportation with the nearest bus stop less than a block away on Lamar Boulevard/Treadwell Avenue in Austin, Texas 78704. The bus can take you to 6th Street (downtown), the Warehouse district (downtown), the 22 acres of the Texas Capitol (downtown), the University of Texas campus; or the Austin Convention Center to name a few destinations. Cab fare is about $5 to downtown - it's only 1/4 mile away.

  • I was exceptionally comfortable at the Zilker Retreat -- it felt like home right away! Sovay has excellent taste so all the furnishings suited the place perfectly. She provides all the comforts you need, including an incredibly comfortable loft bed with plenty of room to sit up without knocking your head (I'm 5'4, may be a bit of an issue if you're a lot taller). Sovay's an excellent host; this is my second stay at one of her properties and I will definitely return! Thanks again for a lovely stay!

  • We just had a fantastic stay at Sovay's Zilker Retreat. Dan and I really enjoyed this cozy home for 4 days while staying in Austin. We made coffee every morning and watched the chickens make their rounds. There is a driveway near the front and it was convenient for us to park the car we rented. I forgot to pack my lotion but there was some I could use so my skin didn't get dry. The temperature changed a lot during our visit but it was easy for us to adjust even in the loft area. We hope to come back soon!

  • The space was clean and cozy - plenty of space for 2. Conveniently located to Zilker Park area, but you'll definitely need a car or bike to explore the rest of the city. Sovay sends along a great list of local recommendations after you book, which we used as reference several times. I would stay here again.

    Hi, Tricia!

Thanks for the opportunity to host you during your stay in Austin :)

  • The Zilker Retreat was truly incredible! It's a very cute small house-like apartment. It's very close to Barton Springs Rd. and Lamar Blvd. which both have a ton of great places to eat and drink (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The apartment itself is located in a very cute and quiet neighbourhood.

The apartment was very clean, comfortable, and warming. It was a treat to stay here and the relaxing environment we needed.

Of course we also took the opportunity to meet with the dad for some eggs and music/life lessons! We were not disappointed!

All-in-all a great place to stay!

I'm glad to hear you had fun at the Zilker Retreat and enjoyed the eggs, music, and neighborhood :)

  • I stayed here during SXSW and the retreat was just beautiful. It's exactly as described, and very comfortable. Sovay provided excellent and extensive instructions and recommendations for things to do in the area. Her father was also quite kind and generous, and very worth getting to know. Highly recommended!

Glad to hear you had a wonderful SXSW here in Austin and at the Zilker Retreat :)

  • Wonderful hostess! Responsive. Helpful. The place is exactly as advertised. Perfect for a couple. This was my second visit to Austin and Sovay's chickens are by far the friendliest that I have encountered while in town. I would definitely book again!

    Chris!

Thank you so much for saying I have the friendliest chickens in Austin...I am so flattered :) My dad does treat them like royalty so I'm so glad you noticed they were happy. Glad you had a nice trip...you're welcome back anytime.

  • loved my stay at Zilker cottage. It was comfortable and quiet and safe. The location was perfect. This place exceeded my expectations. Lots of little thoughtful extras like coffee, cream, sugar. Extra toothbrush etc. The photos are very accurate and Sovay and her Dad are great. Loved the chickens in the yard and the fresh eggs and just picked carrots given to me by William. I would stay here again without any hesitation. One block to Saxon Pub and very close to Zilker park. I only wish I had more time. For those looking for a Hyatt or Marriott experience this is not the place for you. If you want a peaceful little retreat in a nice neighborhood to relax try the Zilker Cottage.

    Hi, Mary!

I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the fresh eggs and carrots from the garden :) And...you're right...it's nice to have Zilker Park and an incredible live music venue like the Saxon Pub within walking distance. This is such a wonderful neighborhood and it is so much fun to share it with guests.

Hope you come back to Austin soon, Mary.

  • Zilker Park, the 78704, and surrounding areas are what makes Austin unique. Zilker Retreat was exactly as presented and I quite liked the experience. At night is was very quiet, but literally you are minutes from the shops, restaurants, bars, and music venues located on S. Lamar, S. First, and S. Congress that make Austin cool. I really enjoyed trying out some of the recommended places to eat during my stay.

  • We loved the Zilker retreat! It was so peaceful and unique (especially with the free range chickens running around)! Keep an eye out for the white fluffy one, we nick named her polar bar chix.

The house was only a 5 minute drive downtown and if its a nice day out definitely walk, it is well worth it! If you are a runner, check out the river trail just across the bridge!

Sovay left wonderful instructions and recommendations for Austin! If you are headed to Austin, make Zilker retreat your home away from home, you will love it.

    Hey Gillian!

Don't tell the other chickens but the white silky is my favorite, too. She lets you pick her up and she talks a lot...too cute. I'm glad you were able to take advantage of the hike and bike trail and the quick access to downtown...it's a great location within Austin to explore :) I hope we see you again.

  • A nice, quaint old-school Austin place to stay in one of our best located neighborhoods. I'm actually a local who needed to be downtown for a few days, so I mainly used the bungalow for a crash pad. It's a very unique place to stay, full of the Austin "weirdness" we treasure. From the chickens in the backyard, to her talkative father as property caretaker, to the loft bedroom upstairs, this is a cool place in a cool location. Close to most things anyone would want to do in our great city, she also provides the most detailed lost of things to do / places to go I've come across. Thanks so much!

Hi, Chris! The Zilker Retreat is as "authentic Austin" as it gets. Glad you thoroughly enjoyed your stay and thought it was cool experience...that's saying a lot for a local like yourself...appreciate it :)
