The Space

One of the best heritage architecture to be found in Shanghai. Build in the 1930s by a tobacco factory tycoon, now a typical Chinese neighborhood where everybody knows each other.

Can be best described as a small countryside village with no noise and clean air located in the most central spot of the 20 million metropole of Shanghai. All famous restaurants and clubs of the town are within walking distance -- the most expensive city center of China ist just around the corner: Jingan Temple.

Public transportation starts just in front of the gate: bus lines (phone number hidden) and 20 -- the most famous trolley bus line, operated by electricity since 1928 and one of the nicest rides in Shanghai as the last stop is at the Bund/Peace Hotel.
Jingan Temple station with metro lines 2 and 7 is a 300 m / 0.2 miles walk.

The room itself has two windows opening to the south and east with beautiful sunlight from the morning throughout the whole day and at night you control more than 30 different lights with an easy to operate home automation system (Customizes software programmed especially for this location and operated via webbrowser or one of the preinstalled iPod touch's as the owner is a software engineer). Once you tried it, you will never want to live without.

There is no TV in the room although a build in projector system is available to display any content via an Apple TV on a 2 meter wide canvas if you need.

Unlike most old apartments this room features it own bathroom with toilet, bidet and shower. In addition to the master bed, the sofa at the table also is great to sleep on with it's Danish mattress and another pull-out sofa can be changed to a bed if needed to accomodate a third/fourth person or children. (1 bed for one or two people, 1 couch for one person, 1 pull-out sofa for one grown up or two children).

As the distance to the next China Telecom digital subscriber line access multiplexer is just a few steps, internet is much faster than at any other location in Shanghai. Live streaming of Youtube, Netflix and similar (via encrypted VPN) is no problem 24/7. There is a wireless network for you (including access to the Apple TV and Home Automation System) while you may use/offer a separate Guest Network featuring an easy to remember password.

Parking your car is between 20¥ (some hours) to 50 ¥ for the whole day. The doormen in this community are exceptionally friendly and engaged compared with other communties in Shanghai.

  • Very spartan accommodations which is what I expected. A quaint place that is in the heart of the city very close to a main subway line. Living in close quarters with friendly people of all ages. Though the complex was quiet the fridge next to the bed could be a nuisance unless you are a sound sleeper.

There was no internet service even though it was promised. I had to beg a young neighbour if I could use her wifi. Then I had to hang out in the hallway to have access to the signal. Can't live without internet then this may not be your place to stay.

Other than that no complaints. Couldn't beat the location.

  • Very charming old lane house flat in Shanghai, central location yet quiet and green surrounded by beautiful alleys. Really lovely waking up to the birds singing outside the window every morning. Everything you need to see, do, and taste within walking distance. Ansgar was great host, quick to respond to all my requests even when he was on the road and 7hrs time difference between us!
