The Space

Miro cottage is a 1 bedroom self-contained cottage situated at the waters edge of the beautiful Waimea Estuary.
Private and tranquil, Miro is perfectly equipped for a relaxing holiday with hammocks, good books, board games, barbecue, brazier, kayak, stand up paddle boards (x2) and endless views to gaze at.
The cottage has wifi and good cellphone coverage.
The coastal village of Mapua is less than 5 minutes drive away. Mapua's busy wharf area has cafés and restaurants and several galleries representing local artists. The village has a grocery store, bakery and a choice of pubs.

Miro is a very popular base for day trips to the Abel Tasman National Park. Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks are also within easy driving distance for day walks. Located in the centre of the Nelson region the choices are endless: visiting wineries, artists studios, rivers and beaches for swimming, kayaking, tramping, sky diving, trout fishing and more.

Sunday Star-Times columnist (and avid bird-watcher) Steve Braunias declared the Matahua Cottages to be the "Best Holiday Cottages in New Zealand".

  • The Miro Cottage was a wonderful place to spend the last two nights of our South Island holiday. Elspeth was a wonderful host with a fantastic sense of style and gracious commitment to our planet. The cottage was beautifully decorated, and the location is a birder's dream. I look forward to returning to her gorgeous piece of property again.

  • miro cottage is special. the location between nelson and abel tasman was perfect for us. the farm and estuary setting was spectacular. watching the tides and the birds come and go at sunrise and sunset was the perfect way to start and end the day. the cottage itself was charming and very aesthetically pleasing - simple/classic yet very sophisticated, with just the right mix of retro design and up to date fixtures. elspeth is a very gracious host.

  • We absolutely loved the cottage just outside of Mapua. Highly recommended-we were still talking about it in Queenstown, I think it was our favorite spot to stay of both the north and south islands. Elspeth was lovely and welcoming-even gave us some fresh vege from her garden! If you have the chance, don't miss a stay here!

  • In a word; wow! The Miro Cottage far exceeded expectation and was difficult to leave. We enjoyed every moment on the property and surrounding area. Elspeth was so gracious, we felt at home immediately. Private, serene, and picture perfect, we would not hesitate to revisit.

  • Fantastic time at the Miro cottage. Elspeth and her husband couldn't have been nicer or more helpful, and the cottage was the perfect hangout spot and launch point for Abel Tasman Nat'l Park. Meant to stay one night and ended up signing on for another. Loved the fireplace, outdoor tub, fully stocked kitchen, and interesting wildlife outside. Can't say enough about the place.

  • Miro Cottage was our absolute fave stay during our month-long trip to New Zealand. When we arrived we were delighted by the apple trees and grape vines, the estuary, and the cottage is just too cute. It's tiny from the outside, but actually felt like plenty of room inside - and decorated in a fun, warm, artistic and welcoming way. The bed and sheets were SO comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed to cook some good meals. It's just a beautiful property altogether and Elspeth is a wonderful host. The cottage felt very private and was a great place to unwind. I wish I could go here every weekend. Elspeth let us do a load of laundry (so helpful, thank you!) and also let us take paddle boards out onto the estuary while the tide was in, which was such a fun thing to do. Also - make sure you go into the little town of Mapua to get a little tub of the smoked mussels at the Smokehouse: YUM. We also used this as a hub for a great day trip to Abel Tasman. Highly recommended!

We are a family of 3 living on a small organic waterfront property (2 Ha) on the Waimea Inlet near Mapua. Our place is a mixture of fruit trees, vegetable garden, chickens and a small vineyard. We love to travel, and have spent many years living overseas. We have a constant flow of people from all over the world staying here which we love.... as well as guests in the cottages we have wwoofers here most of the year (willing workers on organic farms) .
