Budget Studio Near Local Hotspots

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Bourke Street, Surry Hills, NSW 2010, Australia

This is a budget accommodation option, better than a private room in a backpackers, and cheaper than a private room in a hotel. It is one of the best value studios for low cost that you will find in Sydney.

The Space

It is conveniently close to local hotspots in the heart of Sydney's gay community, surrounded by awesome cafe's, bars and nightclubs, and a short walk to the CBD.
The studio itself is small, but the nicely decorated furnishings make a practical use out of the compact space. This is suitable for a couple or singles, and is located in an older art deco style building with slightly deteriorated hallway and entrance to the building.
BEDROOM: Includes a small dining table with 2 chairs, side table, clean linen, heater and a comfortable bed which can be folded into a couch if required.
KITCHENETTE: Includes kettle, stove, fridge, some condiments, tea, and cutlery, plates, glasses, etc
BATHROOM: Includes toilet, shower, towels, body wash and toilet paper. This is a fully tiled wet room with space saving design to have shower behind the door. The shower does not have as strong/fast of a flow as usual, but it does have a full stream from the shower head which is adequate.
INTERNET: There is prepaid WIFI internet which works with every device. Sometimes there is credit left over from previous guests, otherwise it's easy to recharge online from $10.
OTHER FACILITIES: The studio has buzzer intercom access and the building has communal laundry facilities available downstairs at $3 per load.

COMPARISON: I have 3 studios, 1 block from each other, centrally located in Surry Hills. Main differences between them are:

***** 7th Floor Luxury Studio & Balcony *****
- Furnished balcony for 2
- Television
- Unimited ADSL2+ internet
- Air conditioner
- Modern bathroom

*** Modern 7th Floor Studio ***
- Unlimited ADSL2+ internet
- Air conditioner
- Modern bathroom

* Budget Studio Near Local Hotspots *
- Prepay your internet usage if required
- Heater and Fan
- Basic bathroom

Guest Access

Complete access to the private studio any time with your own set of keys.
CHECK IN: Usually from 11am onwards.
CHECK OUT: Usually by 10am.
I like to be very flexible with check in and check out which can be as early or as late as you like when availability of other reservations allow it.
Communal laundry facilities available in the building at $3 per wash and $3 per dry.

Interaction with Guests

I am in Sydney 9-10 months of the year and almost always meet guests for check in to explain transport options, potential tourist activities, and local hangouts. If I am out of town, a colleague will usually meet for check in.
After check in, I tend not to see most guests again, but I am on call any time for help, problem solving or local suggestions.

The Neighborhood

Located on the popular Crown Street, surrounded by loads of cafe's, bars and stores in the inner city village-like suburb of Surry Hills. This is very centrally located to most tourist activities and local hotspots, only a short walk to downtown.
3-5 minutes walk to Hyde Park.
5-10 minutes walk to Chinatown, Darling Harbour.
20-25 minutes walk to Circular Quay, Opera House, etc.
Located 1 block off the famous gay strip known as Oxford Street. It's fairly quiet inside the studio considering how close it is to nightlife options.

Getting around

Very centrally located within walking distance to most tourist attractions. Lots of public transport options nearby including buses, trains, taxi, and trams.
From the airport there are 2 main transport options:
1) 15-20 minute train ($16) on the same line as the airport to "Museum" station, followed by a 5 minute walk up Oxford Street.
2) 20-25 minute taxi ($30-$60) directly to Crown Street depending on traffic.

Other Things to Note

Sydney is a very safe city and there are no security or safety concerns. This building does have security doors downstairs and is in a great location to enjoy some nightlife, which is safe even for a woman by herself at night.

Check In
  • Me and my sister stayed for 4 nights in Scott's apartment. It was very nice, great location (walked everywhere) and clean. Scott was also kind to highlight some good bars and clubs around Sydney as well as giving us some tips to save money on traveling. there are many tourist brochures and maps in the apartment, which was nice to have a look at. We really recommend people to stay at this apartment. Thank you Scott!!!

  • Scott's studio is in a convenient location for public transit to major tourist sites like Circular Quay, Bondi & Cogee beaches and is easy to reach from the airport. Scott is a great host and provided a lot of useful transit info upon our arrival and has many brochures and maps available in the room to plan your activities. The studio was very clean and was exactly as advertised. It suited our needs for our 5 day stay in Sydney, although the kitchenette is quite small and has no microwave. I wouldn't recommend the studio to someone who wanted to do lots of cooking.

  • The experience at the studio was unfortunately bad. Not because the place was small or because of the location, but because of cockroaches. The second day, when we came back from sightseeing, we found at least five roaches alive in the living room. We contacted the owner and he promised something was going to be done the following day, but again on the third day, we found more cockroaches crawling on the floor. Then I asked the owner if it was possible to give at least the money paid “cleaning fee” back, as the place was obviously not clean. The owner kindly invited us to find another place and refund the money for the nights not used, but where on earth will you find a place to stay on such a short notice in one of the most expensive cities in the world? We had booked the place well in advance (3-4 months), trying to plan everything as best as possible, and at the end of the day, you are left with no option, and nobody willing to help you. So we finally decided to stay. The final count of cockroaches during the whole five day period was 12. Considering the apartment is twelve square meters, it makes a nice ratio of 1 cockroach per square meter. The response from Airbnb although a bit late was in the end good. If it had been pest free, the experience would had been better. For this price you should not expect luxury but at least some cleanliness would be nice.

  • This studio is in a great location, walking distance to a lot of attractions nearby. There is a Woolworths and IGA just down the road, and lots of cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops. The studio itself is small, and in an older building, just as the photos show. It is recommended if you are visiting Sydney for a few days and just want somewhere to stash your luggage, and sleep. Scott was friendly, helpful and responsive, gave us some good tips for our visit and is very accommodating :) It is a very good price for such a great location, we will be back next time we visit Sydney!

  • Great little studio in the heart of Sydney's Eastern suburbs. It's small but does the job and Scott is a great host. Great value if you're just looking for somewhere to sleep as you explore the city.

  • I cannot recommend this studio. Although it is very close to downtown Sydney, which was great, it is way too small. The studio is approx. 12 sq. meters ( 108 sq. ft.) the kitchen area has just enough room for one person to stand and the toilet and shower are all one little closet. You have to remove everything from the bathroom when you shower. And did I mention that the shower comes out in a single stream and the hot & cold water are impossible to balance. Also, there is only hot water at the kitchen sink if you want a trickle and that is the only sink in the place. All that being said, the studio is very inexpensive for being in such a great neighborhood. And lastly, the host, Scott, was more than understanding and offered to refund my money for the last two nights if I wanted to leave. So, buyer beware and know what you're getting into before you book.

  • My boyfriend and I were in Sydney for a wedding and to see friends so all we needed was somewhere central, clean and convenient for to rest our heads and Scott's place was perfect. Yes it is small and the fridge is in the wardrobe but we didn't go to Sydney to spend all our time in the flat - it was just to sleep. Scott is so friendly and helpful. The flat was clean. There are really nice coffee shops about 100m away for delicious breakfast and everything you could want is walking distance away. Thanks Scott for making a very hectic weekend for us so comfortable and hassle free
