The Space

Our ocean view eco-retreat is one of a kind.
Enjoy incredible sweeping views from our mountaintop home.
Situated on a working organic tropical flower farm, this is a nature lovers paradise. There are abundant flowers, birds, wildlife, and sweeping views of the pacific coast of Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula. There are Mangos, Bananas, Passion Fruit, Breadfruit, Avocados, and Ylang Ylang growing in abundance throughout the property. The closest beach Playa Manzanillo is 2 km. The strikingly beautiful beach of Playa Hermosa is 5 km. Santa Teresa with it's many restaurants, spas, luxury hotels, yoga centers, and international travel scene is 10 km.
The "Rancho" is an open air gazebo style structure, that has 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, and an open living space with a seating area and kitchen. There is an outdoor shower and wash basin for hand laundry.
This place is remote! You will need a 4x4 rental car with good clearance, or a locally available quad (ATV).
There are solar panels and a battery bank to power lights, radio, refrigeration, and pressurized water. There are a couple of 110v outlets for laptops, and other small items. Local cell service and a (slow) USB internet card are available.

Visiting the farm here in "La Palmita" you will find absolute tranquility, with sweeping views of the tropical ocean and mountains extending out to the distance. Hummingbirds greet you in the morning, and the sound of waves breaking on the sand put you to sleep at night.
There are hundreds of tropical flowers, and abundant birds and wildlife throughout the property.

A short walk through the banana grove is a teak wood platform under the shade of a giant bamboo tree. This is an ideal place for yoga, meditation, or to simply relax and watch waves break or see hummingbirds collect nectar.

The rancho is stocked with the necessary items to simply show up with your luggage, relax, and watch the sunset.
The beach is 2 km away, and is a picture perfect white sand beach, nearly deserted, and stretching to the horizon in both directions.
There are tide pools for swimming, waves for surfing, world class beach walks, all within a few kilometers. In nearby Manzaniilo, there are a few local restaurants, and a "mini super" grocery store with just the basics. Many more services, including grocery stores, numerous restaurants, bars, hotels, resorts, and spas can be found 10km away in Santa Teresa and Mal Pais (15 km).

The "dry" season is from Dec - May, and you are nearly guaranteed sunny dry conditions in this time. It occasionally rains, but this is quite rare during the dry season.
June - Nov is the "green" season, and is the time when there is a mix of on rain and sun on the pacific coast, although many sunny days and fabulous weather do exist.

  • WOW – is what we have to say about Katrine and Walt’s Eco-Retreat in La Palmita Costa Rica.
My boyfriend and I rented a car and spent two weeks traveling around the Pacific coast. We were looking for a romantic place that would be close to the nature, and we found it here.
We were originally concerned the Eco-Retreat might be too remote, especially when we were driving there on an endless dirt road, over mountains and even through rivers!! Luckily Walt had provided us with very detailed directions. By the time we arrived we were both sick of driving and feeling a bit worn out. Then, we walked into the rancho and took one look at the amazing view and knew we had made a good choice. Laying in the hammock, looking out to the sea and mountains is absolutely spectacular. The location is unique, out in the country, with Costa Rican farmers as the closest neighbors, but not too far to be to the beach in ten minutes, or to go out to dinner easily. We were concerned about there only being solar power, but on arrival we found a guide to "living off the grid”. The only real change for us was turning off the refri at night when we went to bed.
The area is as amazing as the property. Manzanillo is like a little town that time forgot. Cowboys ride by on horses, cows walk the streets, and when we took our morning walk on the beach we were the only ones there.
It was nice to take the drive to Santa Teresa about 15 kilometers away to visit a tourist area and shop and go out for a delicious dinner. After spending the afternoon and evening we were happy to return to our hidden retreat.
The only negative for us was the slow internet connection. The hosts have plans to upgrade to a faster satellite system, but they didn’t know yet exactly when the work would be completed.
Walt and Katrine are great hosts and easy to communicate with. They have a really unique life set up down here and are eager to share the experience. When we were out to dinner we mentioned we were staying at their place and the owners of the restaurant treated us like family. What a great spot for a relaxing vacation. Pura Vida and pure adventure. We can’t wait to come back for a longer stay!

Pura Vida
Flores Tropicales - La Palmita Organica
The tropical flower farm is a very special place, and we are excited to have you share this experience. I have been an organic farmer, surfer, and globe trotter for about 15 years now, and have over the past 5 years become pretty well established here in Costa Rica. The pure nature, amazing beaches, relaxed atmosphere, and tropical living that this area offers lured me in, and most likely you will feel the same after your visit! Pura Vida- Walt
