Fully equipped Kitchen, laundry room with Dryer available.
What to expect?
A nice clean place, good vibes, warm friends, open minded people. Art all around. Peace. Security. Comfort.
Located in Barrio Escalante, a very nice neighborhood, surrounded by restaurants, bars, yoga schools and the University of Costa Rica's main campus, a beautiful green place for running and walking.
Taxis 24/7 with service at the door. Cheap buses. Walking distance from San Pedro, San Jose, Yoses, Guadalupe.
You're welcome to use our kitchen as if yours, our small but comfy living room and the garage in front where we keep our table and chairs for hosting all our friends who come by for a coffee or to say hi, you're always welcome to join us
We're very social, we treat our guests as friends that we welcome in our city so we try to take you along in our social activities such as going out for a walk, a drink, dinner or also by hanging out at home, sharing wine, beers or any other relaxation elixirs :)
We love our neighborhood, is eclectic and vibrant yet full of history, lots of options for food & drinks, restaurants, bars and cafès all very close to our home. Barrio Escalante used to be one of San Jose's old residential parts but when the city grew it became surrounded within it and it's mostly wealthy home owners emigrated to the outskirts of the city, now it's gone through some changes that made it a new hot place for city living
Taxis from San Jose downtown cost around $4 (2000 colones)
There's a bus that passes every 15 minutes from and to San Jose/San Pedro thru Barrio Escalante. There's also a bigger bus stop a few blocks from home with buses to Cartago, Turrialba, Sabanilla, etc.
The Atlantic train station is 5 - 10 minutes walking distance with trains to Heredia, Cartago and La Sabana.
Juan and Oscar were some of the best hosts I've ever had! They helped to start my entire vacation out with wonderful positive energy! They cooked breakfast for me, they took me out for pizza and beer, and they introduced me to Paula.. who is also amazing and who teaches yoga and dance. Juan and Oscar even came to Envision, a festival that I worked at. We all danced the night away and had an amazing time! For any future guests that read this.. my friends J & O are herb friendly and would very much appreciate it if you shared some of your green from your home town. I brought some from the states and it is no problem getting it through customs! J & O are super amazing people! I really enjoyed my stay at the Art House!
I am happy to write this review about Art House and staying with my two NEW FRIENDS, Oscar and Juanjo! These guys went out of their way to make me feel at home with them for a short two days in San Jose. I regret not being able to stay more and see more of the city with them.
The neighborhood is very safe with many police visible on the streets and quiet in the evening. There is a grocery store walking distance from the house to get anything you may need for your stay however Oscar and Juanjo were willing to share mostly everything with me. There are a lot of restaurants nearby (still thinking about my burger at Costa Rica Beer Factory) and finding taxis or walking isn't difficult at all. The house is very clean beautifully decorated with Juanjo's art!!! Make sure you take the time to look at all of the paintings. The bedroom is huge with a comfortable bed and is in the backside of the house so you feel like you're in your own private space even though it's a shared house.
Don't hesitate and miss the opportunity to stay with Oscar and Juanjo. Their English is excellent, they want you to love Costa Rica as much as they do, and they are great hosts that represent what AirBnB's mission to world travelers is.
juanjo & oscar are the best option to stay in san jose!! they are simply friendly and lovely and help you with everything you need! one of the nice features about them is that they make you feel home and part of their "family"! the flat is super hipp and i love juanjos paintings and all the creative interior! a plus is also the location, 15 minutes walk to the citycenter, nice restaurants (also veggi) nearby! we will come back soon! ;)
Great stay!!! Oscar and Juanjo were wonderful hosts, very welcoming from the moment we arrived. They offered many helpful hints when we had questions about getting around San Jose and even talked to our taxi cab driver to give him better directions. Great people and great location!
A friend and I spent two nights at Oscar and Juanjo’s apartment and had a lovely stay. We were only around in the evening, as our one full day in San Jose was busy with a whitewater rafting trip, and only used the accommodations for sleeping. We thought the apartment was clean and in a good location – not too noisy and safe to walk around at night. Oscar was a great host – Juanjo was out of town on business – who brought us out to dinner for our first night and entertained us with stories of his travels and life in Costa Rica.
For our travel purposes, it may have made more sense to stay in a hotel or B & B since we were getting picked up by various shuttles/busses that work with local hotels.
I recommend staying with Oscar and Juanjo if you’re wanting a more involved look at life in Costa Rica and a chance to make some new friends (Oscar is awesome!).
I had an absolutely awesome time with Juan and Oscar! They were really warm and welcoming and happy to introduce me to their friends and involve me in their life. I would happily stay with them again. I would also like to say a big thank you to their friend Paula.
Oscar and Juan are AMAZING people and hosts. The place is super cute, and has a great vibe. Beautiful art and books all around. Slept very well! and loved meeting all of their interesting friends :) they are very helpful with making suggestions and explaining what's up. Muchas gracias!!!
I stayed with Juan & Oscar for more than 3 months and I couldn't have chosen better! I felt warmly welcomed from the very first day... they became such good friends and I totally fell in love with their generous, open and lovely characters. Oscar has always a hint ready and knows everything and can organize everything... If he does not so, Juan does! :) they are such a great team and I loved to chat with them until late into the night. Not to say how good they cook...mmmh... delicious! The room is huge and beautiful, very bright and has plenty of space. There is this beautiful hand painted closet and some of Juan's exquisite paintings in perfection. The room also has its own little patio which is adorable too. I will come back for sure as soon as I can. Thank you for making my stay in Costa Rica perfect.
Juan and Oscar included us in their lives as if we were old friends. They invited us to a party celebrating the launch of the third edition of the magazine Traffic; they asked us if we would like to tag along to Café Rojo where they were meeting up with friends; they introduced us to the lunch specials at Olio’s. Nothing was too much trouble.
One morning Juan spent an hour explaining the various regions of Costa Rica, helping us plan an itinerary for our days in the country. When Oscar was making a dish to share we friends, he asked us if we’d like to try a local specialty.
Our stay in their home was a great introduction to Costa Rican hospitality and the artistic community. Oscar and Juan are two very capable, talented people with the gift of hospitality. They managed to make people who are twice their age feel young at heart and part of their world. We look forward to watching their careers advance and anticipate being able to say that we knew them when.
We couldn't choose better. The house is in the great area. Close to the centre, but quieter and all the best restaurants are in 5-minute walk.
Staying with guys let us enjoy our trip to Costa Rica more than we've expected. We've got the best and fresh advises about places to visit you could't get in Lonely Planet. We've visited the unbelievable cloud forest, volcanoes, beautiful beaches, saw a lot of wild animals, ate delicious food, swam in a luminous ocean at night. But meeting guys was the best. Thanks! Hope to see you soon!
