Owl Lodge Review
Owl Lodge is truly remarkable. From the amazing views to the warm, cozy and peaceful feeling of the lodge itself, you will emerge recharged and energized! My husband and I spent our first New Years as a married couple at Owl Lodge. It was everything and more! We walked right out the back door to one of the most amazing hikes ever! Owl Lodge is close to historic Nevada City, so you can enjoy the sights and history of Nevada City, yet the lodge is settled in the trees so you feel the peace and privacy the lodge has to offer. Owl Lodge is spacious, yet you don't lose that cozy feeling. Our family came up to visit for a day. There was plenty of room for all of us to sit and mingle and the kids had a blast playing with all the games. The yard is spacious and beautiful! Our beagles had a blast exploring and sniffing! Catriona, the owner, is truly amazing! She was very responsive and helpful. All the info she provided about the lodge and suggestions to local faves were so greatly appreciated. My husband and I travel a lot, and our experience at Owl Lodge was one of the best! We have already agreed to make Owl Lodge a repeat venture. Bridget, December 2012

Owl Lodge is a great place! It is central to all kinds of activities. We did some great rock climbing, hiked/swam the Yuba River, and mountain biked all within 10-20 minutes of Owl Lodge. Catriona was fantastic! She made sure we had everything we needed and checked in on us to assure everything was going well. Couldn't have had a better host. Owl Lodge is a very cool place to hang out, relax and enjoy incredible views, especially after a day of play in the area. I would definitely recommend this place.
The Owl Lodge is the perfect home base for your Yuba River getaway, located close to downtown Nevada City and in between 2 beautiful river spots. You can't ask for much more. The house is clean, quiet and the views are breathtaking! We can't wait to return!
Catriona was very thorough with her instructions prior to our arrival. Gravel driveway wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it might be based on her description, but glad I was in an SUV getting up there.
The pros of our trip:
-The view was spectacular
-Very spacious home for two couples
-Close to downtown Nevada City
-Extremely dusty, even for an old house
-Lots of cobwebs around the place. Seemed as if it hadn't been cleaned in a while.
-Old coffee filter in the coffee pot when we got there, and fridge had not been cleaned of old food items
We just returned from our Lodge and it was gorgeous there.
The Lodge is surrounded by woods and we have a pesticide free zone…:)
The good news is we have at least 6 different types of dragon flies, butterflies, hummingbirds and bees all feel safe coming to our property…
While we do remove cobwebs at least once a week - they will replenish quickly - in a day or two …- its just a fact of life there...
There was a lot going on at the Lodge that needed extra care before Erin's stay - so its understandable that our cleaner (who has worked with us for over two years and is very good at what she does) - missed a couple of things...
We wish that Erin had communicated with us so that we could have helped her enjoy her stay more- and sent over our wonderful cleaner to refresh the home - unfortunately - we were not given that opportunity.
What a perfect retreat! My parent's came down to visit me in SF and neither of them are big fans of the city bustle so finding The Owl Lodge was a great boon. We all loved waking to the great panoramic view and closing the night with a fire in the impressive fireplace. It's a small detail, but we also appreciated the access to movies and Netflix. Catriona was incredibly thorough with information upfront about the Lodge and then upon arrival there was also great information for local sites to check and and places to eat. We had a wonderfully restful time and hope to return in the future.
What a wonderfully relaxing weekend at the Owl Lodge. Everyone in our group wants to return-- the views are stunning, and the lodge really feels cozy and welcoming. The deck is fabulous, and everything about it feels like a retreat. I noticed a review that commented about the bathroom, and I want to respond to that by saying that there were six of us, and we had no problems with the shower or bathrooms. We loved the fireplace, cooking and having great meals, looking at the stars, sitting on the deck. I couldn't have asked for a better weekend. Also, the DVD collection was great to peruse. We watched Moonstruck one night. In terms of location, the house is just five minutes from downtown Nevada City and maybe 15 from hiking along the Yuba. Thanks, Catriona!
The driveway is indeed quite tricky to navigate but the views are worth it. Catriona was very helpful when we could not locate the gate code and responded promptly. I wouldn't call the place totally rustic but it is not updated. Be aware that there is only one shower. With a full house that can be tricky. All in all, it is a great location with enough room for seven comfortably. Beautiful part of the country.
We have a great housecleaner who has worked for us for two years - who usually does an excellent job. We do asks guests to contact us right away if things are not as they should be - because then we can attend to whatever is needed. Its too bad we are learning about the concern about the bathroom etc at this late stage and I would encourage Kelsey to reach out sooner if there is a concern.
The driveway could have been more of an issue with these guests as well because they hosted a party with 26 people at our home - (which we were unaware was going to be held at our property) and unfortunately our drive was very ripped up after their stay.
Catriona provided a lot of good information about the surrounding area - places to eat, hike, etc. The cabin has a charming interior with lots of cozy spaces as well as a lovely outdoor area. It is conveniently located close to both Nevada City and the South Yuba River. The downstairs bathroom is cramped, but the upstairs one off the loft is nice.
