Owl Lodge is a beautiful private Lodge overlooking Tahoe National Forest Lands. It is a peaceful retreat for couples, families, and friends that love nature and outdoor adventures but like to be close to town for excellent meals and entertainment.
The view from the Lodge is serene and it feels like it is miles from anywhere as it sits atop a quiet hillside on 4 acres. However, the Lodge is just 1.5 miles from Nevada City (5 miles from Grass Valley) so restaurants, shopping, vineyards and theater are near by.
The Lodge is Vintage style and has a cozy feel for couples but also provides a lot of privacy and space for larger groups or two couples, or bringing the grand-parents.
In the winter, the large brick fireplace serves as a cozy focal point and the floor to ceiling windows from the living room offer an inspiring view out doors.
The Lodge is 5 minutes from the Yuba river and amazing swimming and a great hiking trail along the river.
The Lodge is also very close to mountain biking trails (5 minutes) and just 45 minutes from Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. The Lodge is very convenient to get to - as it is just 1 hour from Sacramento, and 2.5 hours from the SF Bay area.
Owl Lodge borders a beautiful hiking trail that runs along a stream just feet from your door. The Lodge is close to hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. It is also close to Lakes - for picnicking - swimming, fishing. The Lodge is just minutes away the Tahoe National Forest and the Pioneer Trail entrance is just half a mile away.
The Yuba River is just 15 minutes away and provides excellent sun bathing, swimming (in season) and fishing. The Yuba is known for exceptional white water rafting and the Nevada City region is a central hub for white water rafting. The region also offers exceptional mountain biking experiences on miles of trails through forest lands.
If shopping and good restaurants are important to you - the Lodge is a 20 minute walk -or 2 minute drive to Nevada City which offers wonderful stores and restaurants and has beautiful Victorian homes. Grass Valley - is only 5 minutes away - and offers many more restaurants and stores. In the winter Nevada City celebrates Victorian Christmas. All year round - it attracts top entertainers and has a local theater. In January, Nevada City come alive with the Wild and Scenic Film Festival - one of the largest environmental film festivals in the country.
The Lodge was built in 1960 and has a Vintage Charm. The beds are all new but the furniture reflects the time period. The Lodge has four separate sleeping rooms in-doors and in the summer - there is a shed that can be used as a sleeping room.
The Lodge has a very large master bedroom with a wood burning stove. This room has a brand new Queen bed - and an older sofa bed that sleeps 2 people. This room is at the far end of the Lodge and very private - it also makes a great game room - and has a dart board - and games and puzzles - as well as a TV that plays DVD movies. Since the room is at the far end of the house - and the furthest from the central heat -there is also a wood stove, and an electric heater and electric blankets added for extra warmth in the winter.
The middle room has a brand new full bed, and a large bookshelf and library with assortment of books, and an electric fireplace.
The room closest the living room has two brand new twin beds and a great view of tall trees from the window.
The sleeping loft is super cozy, private (but with a view of the Living Room below). Children love to play here and It is also right next to the upstairs bathroom.
4 WD vehicles are recommended as the driveway to the Lodge is steep. Many front wheel drive cars have no problem if driven properly in no snow conditions. In snow conditions only 4WDs are recommended. Rear wheel drive cars not allowed at top of drive.
Owl Lodge Review
Owl Lodge is truly remarkable. From the amazing views to the warm, cozy and peaceful feeling of the lodge itself, you will emerge recharged and energized! My husband and I spent our first New Years as a married couple at Owl Lodge. It was everything and more! We walked right out the back door to one of the most amazing hikes ever! Owl Lodge is close to historic Nevada City, so you can enjoy the sights and history of Nevada City, yet the lodge is settled in the trees so you feel the peace and privacy the lodge has to offer. Owl Lodge is spacious, yet you don't lose that cozy feeling. Our family came up to visit for a day. There was plenty of room for all of us to sit and mingle and the kids had a blast playing with all the games. The yard is spacious and beautiful! Our beagles had a blast exploring and sniffing! Catriona, the owner, is truly amazing! She was very responsive and helpful. All the info she provided about the lodge and suggestions to local faves were so greatly appreciated. My husband and I travel a lot, and our experience at Owl Lodge was one of the best! We have already agreed to make Owl Lodge a repeat venture. Bridget, December 2012

What a wonderfully relaxing weekend at the Owl Lodge. Everyone in our group wants to return-- the views are stunning, and the lodge really feels cozy and welcoming. The deck is fabulous, and everything about it feels like a retreat. I noticed a review that commented about the bathroom, and I want to respond to that by saying that there were six of us, and we had no problems with the shower or bathrooms. We loved the fireplace, cooking and having great meals, looking at the stars, sitting on the deck. I couldn't have asked for a better weekend. Also, the DVD collection was great to peruse. We watched Moonstruck one night. In terms of location, the house is just five minutes from downtown Nevada City and maybe 15 from hiking along the Yuba. Thanks, Catriona!
The driveway is indeed quite tricky to navigate but the views are worth it. Catriona was very helpful when we could not locate the gate code and responded promptly. I wouldn't call the place totally rustic but it is not updated. Be aware that there is only one shower. With a full house that can be tricky. All in all, it is a great location with enough room for seven comfortably. Beautiful part of the country.
We have a great housecleaner who has worked for us for two years - who usually does an excellent job. We do asks guests to contact us right away if things are not as they should be - because then we can attend to whatever is needed. Its too bad we are learning about the concern about the bathroom etc at this late stage and I would encourage Kelsey to reach out sooner if there is a concern.
The driveway could have been more of an issue with these guests as well because they hosted a party with 26 people at our home - (which we were unaware was going to be held at our property) and unfortunately our drive was very ripped up after their stay.
Catriona provided a lot of good information about the surrounding area - places to eat, hike, etc. The cabin has a charming interior with lots of cozy spaces as well as a lovely outdoor area. It is conveniently located close to both Nevada City and the South Yuba River. The downstairs bathroom is cramped, but the upstairs one off the loft is nice.
Everything was excellent. what a gorgeous place. Owner was very helpful and informative in all regards - made for a lovely stay. Thank you Catriona!

We had a good experience (7 of us). The neighborhood is woods; house on top of a somewhat steep hill. Great views from the deck that is in front of the Lodge.
My husband Paul and I bought the Lodge over two years ago. We fell in love with this Lodge, Tahoe forest and the region - and plan on moving here when we retire. We tend to like charming older homes - and the Lodge certainly fits that description.
In the meantime we enjoy allowing guests to visit us. We have had an engagement occur at the Lodge, a first wedding anniversary, and hosted many family reunions.
We like to make sure our guests enjoy their stay - they are sent a welcome packet with helpful information about the area and we do prefer to speak to guests via phone on arrival or prior to - to help them get acclimated. While we are not usually at the Lodge we welcome calls from guests to ask questions or for suggestions.
Guests that seem to enjoy the lodge the most are outdoor enthusiasts and people that like being at the edge of a forest, yet near town in a 60s style A frame that offers coziness but also space for privacy.
