The Space

A beautiful private Lodge overlooking Tahoe National Forest Lands. A peaceful retreat for couples, families, and friends that love nature and outdoor adventures but like to be close to town for excellent meals and entertainment.

The view from the Lodge is serene and it feels like it is miles from anywhere as it sits atop a quiet hillside. However, the Lodge is just 1.5 miles from Nevada City (5 miles from Grass Valley) so restaurants, shopping, vineyards and theater are near by.

The Lodge is Vintage style and has a cozy feel for couples but also provides a lot of privacy and space for larger groups or two couples.

In the winter, the large brick fireplace serves as a cozy focal point and the floor to ceiling windows from the living room offer an inspiring view.

The Lodge is 5 minutes from the Yuba river and amazing swimming and a great hiking trail along the river.

The Lodge is also very close to mountain biking trails (5 minutes) and just 45 minutes from Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. The Lodge is very convenient to get to - as it is just 1 hour from Sacramento, and 2.5 hours from the SF Bay area.

Owl Lodge borders a beautiful hiking trail that runs along a stream just feet from your door. The Lodge is close to hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. It is also close to Lakes - for picnicking - swimming, fishing. The Lodge is just minutes away the Tahoe National Forest and the Pioneer Trail entrance is just half a mile away.

The Yuba River is just 15 minutes away and provides excellent sun bathing, swimming (in season) and fishing. The Yuba is known for exceptional white water rafting and the Nevada City region is a central hub for white water rafting. The region also offers exceptional mountain biking experiences on miles of trails through forest lands.

If shopping and good restaurants are important to you - the Lodge is a 2 minute drive to Nevada City which offers wonderful stores and restaurants and has beautiful Victorian homes.

In the winter Nevada City celebrates Victorian Christmas. All year round - it attracts top entertainers and has a local theater.

In January, Nevada City come alive with the Wild and Scenic Film Festival - one of the largest environmental film festivals in the country.

The Lodge was built in 1960 and has a Vintage Charm but is not upgraded. The beds are all new but the furniture reflects the time period. If you like everything new and upgraded this is Not the place for you - but there are much more expensive accommodations in the region that will suit that taste.

The Lodge has four separate sleeping rooms and this includes a small loft bedroom next to the upstairs bathroom.

Note too that the Lodge has two bathrooms - and only one bathroom has a shower with the other having a bathtub.

The Lodge has central heat and air that is perfect for the main section including the living room, dining area and kitchen and the bedrooms nearest the center. The rest of the Lodge (two bedrooms) away from the central section is heated by a wood or electric stove, and cooled by a swamp cooler or fan,

4 WD vehicles are recommended (as the driveway to the Lodge is steep. Many front wheel drive cars have no problem if driven properly in NO snow conditions. In snow conditions only 4WDs are recommended. Rear wheel drive cars NOT allowed at top of drive. Parking for 3 Vehicles comes with this agreement - extra vehicles pay extra fee - ALL drivers must be made aware of driveway conditions and agreement

Owl Lodge Review
Owl Lodge is truly remarkable. From the amazing views to the warm, cozy and peaceful feeling of the lodge itself, you will emerge recharged and energized! My husband and I spent our first New Years as a married couple at Owl Lodge. It was everything and more! We walked right out the back door to one of the most amazing hikes ever! Owl Lodge is close to historic Nevada City, so you can enjoy the sights and history of Nevada City, yet the lodge is settled in the trees so you feel the peace and privacy the lodge has to offer. Owl Lodge is spacious, yet you don't lose that cozy feeling. Our family came up to visit for a day. There was plenty of room for all of us to sit and mingle and the kids had a blast playing with all the games. The yard is spacious and beautiful! Our beagles had a blast exploring and sniffing! Catriona, the owner, is truly amazing! She was very responsive and helpful. All the info she provided about the lodge and suggestions to local faves were so greatly appreciated. My husband and I travel a lot, and our experience at Owl Lodge was one of the best! We have already agreed to make Owl Lodge a repeat venture. Bridget, December 2012

House Rules

All guests Must sign and we must receive a Vacation agreement prior to confirming your booking.

We ask all Vacation renters to be good communicators - we may not be there in person - but we care about you and the quality of your stay - we ask all renters to If for some reason the Lodge is not in good condition when you arrive, and this also pertains to cleanliness, or something breaks or is damaged prior to or during your stay - You agree that you have a DUTY to contact us immediately so that we can take steps to repair, clean, fix or remedy the situation as soon as possible so that you can have a more enjoyable stay.

We allow well behaved, and totally house trained and clean pets with an extra security.

There is a shallow pond at the Lodge. No Pets or people are allowed in the pond and children and pets must be supervised at all times.

This is a strictly Non-Smoking House.

We have two garbage cans and will remove any garbage that fits neatly (and sorted via recyclable and non) in those cans. Anything more than that must be removed by guest.

We do not allow rear wheel drive cars at the top of our drive, only 4 WD and front wheel drive. Rear wheel drive cars must park at bottom of driveway.

To light a fire in our fireplace or use our wood stove - we only allow people with previous fire building experience and understand safety issues - no lighter fluid allowed on property and no logs like duraflame - only natural wood is allowed.

The Lodge is an older building and is located in the woods. Because of this and because of drought exacerbating environmental conditions - we are finding that a light dust can settle in the Lodge (especially on the electronics in less than 24 hours - this means - you may find a thin layer of dust even though the Lodge has been professionally cleaned 24-48 hours or more before you arrive. In addition, because of its woodsy location - we do have insects like spiders, ants, ticks, bees and so forth.
We do NOT allow pesticides on the property (except for the occasional ant motel because its contained in the house).
Please wipe down counters and do not leave food out so as not to attract ants.
Also - spiders are continuously spinning webs - we have found that webs may re-occur or new ones spring up less than 24 hours after we have cleaned! If you do not want to experience a spider web, insect or light dust. This is NOT the place for you!
We recommend a hotel that is not in the Woods and that employs full time cleaning staff that can make continual rounds.

Obligation to Disclose & Inform: As a vacation renter you are Obligated to inform and disclose to any guests that you invite onto the property - of the Lodge Agreement, disclosures about hazards, and the Lodge rules.
