We were greeted with smiles in the driveway and couldn't have asked for a better stay. We had a large group, which the castle easily accommodated, and the family of the estate were outstanding hosts. This was our first airbnb and the standards are now set very high thanks to our hosts. The rooms were spacious and the grounds were wonderful. Although we weren't sure how the family being there would be at first we can't wait to return again! Too hot? They have fans. Hungry? Head to the kitchen. Need anything at all in addition to what was already provided? They have it. We also met some other guests who were a lot of fun as well! We made great use of all three floors and all the amenities and there are a ton! Loved the family pets as well. This house has a ton of character and I can't wait to bring a new group next year if not sooner.
When you approach Sunny Gables, you drive through a beautiful older California neighborhood, past homes with perfectly manicured lawns and exquisite landscaping. You pass Mercedes and Land Rovers parked in driveways, and then you reach Sunny Gables with dead grass, old toys and a dilapidated swing set.
Upon entry, you can't help but notice the beautiful architecture. It's a unique home, there's no doubt about that. But you know what else is unique? THE FACT THAT THE OWNERS WILL BE STAYING IN THE HOME WITH YOU. The ad fails to mention that the owners live there full time. I have stayed in plenty of vacation rentals, but never in my life have I heard of this happening. I don't think they meant any harm, however I think they truly do not understand the concept of boundaries, or our expectations as renters. I'm honestly not sure how many of them there were because new people just kept appearing. Off the top of my head, I can think of 3-4 adults and 3 different children that we came across over the course of our stay. They like to cook while we're hanging out in the kitchen, kick us out of the dining room so that they can use it, play video poker on iPads in the middle of the hallway right outside our bedrooms, watch TV in the living room so that we feel uncomfortable using that space, and throw loud dance parties in the basement. So they're certainly not obtrusive or anything. No, not at all.
The kitchen and bathrooms weren't the pinnacle of cleanliness - were the towels truly washed, or were they just dried and re-folded? We'll never know. Good luck finding room in the refrigerator for your food...if you're brave enough to open it. One of the women in our group stepped in dog poop in the kitchen. They keep their puppies in the basement, so the basement reeks of urine. The upstairs bathroom at the end of the hallway looks like it was poorly renovated sometime around 1950 and hasn't been touched ever since. There's no ventilation, and the window is painted shut, so it makes all the bedrooms in the vicinity extremely humid. Everything smells musty. The closets are full of their personal belongings.
I'm pretty sure the owners' idea of cleaning up for the guests consisted of shoving everything they own into the closets and shutting the doors, similar to how a teenager would clean their room. Either that, or a clothing bomb went off in them. It looked like something straight out of hoarders - no exaggeration. There were even cats lurking in the shadows. The light fixture in one of the bedrooms was filled with dozens of dead bees.
Overall, it was a beautiful home, so if you don't mind living amongst very odd strangers, this is the place for you. Just whatever you do, don't rack up a bunch of credits on the PacMan machine or you'll receive a stern talking to.
My experience at Sunny Gables was absolutely wonderful. I hosted my 29th birthday party there and had a bunch of friends spend the night. The estate is impressive and so much larger inside than the pictures can convey. Sherry was extremely accommodating and laid back, offering her fancy dish ware to use for the spread and went out of her way to get a cable to ensure we could play music. The party was a wonderful success. I cannot express how awe-inspiring this old house is. The history is rich and the building is unique and grand. The only thing I wished I knew earlier is that while completely wonderful and amicable, Sherry and her family do live in the house even though the listing is for the entire house. Which made me feel a little uncomfortable about having a private Valley of the Dolls themed lingerie party (even more so because she has young children). But they assured me we could be loud and would have utmost privacy. As it turns out the house is large enough for a family to co-exist un noticed while throwing a party, though during our stay there were people in and out of the kitchen a bit. A few bedrooms of the main house are private and there are a few odd curtained off areas that beg to be peeked behind, which gave the experience a Lynchian quality, somewhat of a ghostly feeling, kind of like the movie The Others (the house is that big too!). Something important to remember is that this is not a hotel. So seeing personal affects of the tenants or having run-ins with the people who live here is something that is within the realm of possibility. And if you ask me it added to the overall strange, wonderful, bizarre and surreal experience that was Sunny Gables. Very Twin Peaks.
Overall, I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this listing. The hosts Darleena (sp?) and Sherry are extremely accommodating and nice (they made us a pancake breakfast in the morning!). If you don't mind sharing the house (they were very good about lending us privacy when we needed it) then this listing will be perfect for you! A wonderful time and a truly incredible property!
Our experience staying at this vintage home was fabulous. I was really impresed and it was a memorable experience going up the vintage elevator and then the elevator moving down to close the floor to walk tothe bedroom. Our group enjoyed every minute of their stay and Sherry always treated us to a full and fresh breakfast. Sherry was a great host and even took care of the rest of the group when I had to leave early and arranged for a campfire dinner and also took care of the transportation of the group to LAX airport. I was surprised by couple of reviews about dust and not being clean. This is a vintage home and the place is really big and if one has to enjoy the real feel of a vintage home and feel like a real home there is no better place than staying at this place. I will definitely come back here.
