My husband and I and my best friend and her family (4 adults, 2 kids ages 11 and 7) shared this condo for a week to celebrate my 40th birthday and 2nd wedding anniversary. It was perfect.
CONDO: The condo's size and layout made it comfortable and easy to share the space so that we all had common areas when we needed them (meals and socializing) and separate / private areas when we wanted a little alone time for reading, napping, or downtime. The beds were comfy with lots of pillows and the condo was tidy with extra chairs and items to make our stay more comfortable. There are books, board games, great wireless access (to stream Netflix on several iPads) and TVs in every room, plus a fully packed kitchen to make your stay feel seamless (pots, pans, coffee maker, rice cooker, etc.). There were also enough beach towels and the washer/dryer made it handy to wash the towels to be used the next day. The condo common areas were also great with BBQ grills right outside that were SO easy to use that we regularly made dinner each night and relaxed after a day on the road to Hana, at the beach, or visiting Haleakala. The kids loved the pool with the kids pool, hot tub, and 3 - 4 ft pool.
LOCATION: The beach is right down the parking lot across the street so I would say that the condo was perfectly situated for a week's stay by the beach. Kehei is a wonderful area, beaches there are perfect for families, everything from 24 hour Foodland and Longs Drugstore are down the road, and locals obviously live in the area as the day gets started around 6 - 7 am when people run, bike, and are stand-up paddle boarding along the beaches and kids head to school. It isn't 'touristy' or built up like Waikiki which is exactly what we were looking for because when we wanted that, we drove up a little ways to Kaanapali beach which is tremendously built out. Personally, I like to be in the ocean and looking back to a beach with sand, palm trees, and lushness rather than in the ocean with big boats, wave runners, and looking back to a beach with multi-story hotels with little greenery in sight.
HOST: Greg was a wonderfully gracious host, always provided immediate responses, and was kind enough to adapt to our changing schedule as we extended our stay by 1 1/2 days towards the end. We had a great time and I'd highly recommend this condo to others!
The Jay's condo is a great option in Kihei for a family on a budget. It is located just a few blocks from the beach, which is about a 5-10 minute walk depending on how fast you walk. The size and layout of the condo was perfect for our party of 6 (3 kids and 3 adults).
The place was very clean when we arrived. There were plenty of towels, both bath and beach. The kitchen was well equipt with the basic supplies: pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and coffee maker. The galley kitchen was a good size and opened up to the living room, which was great for socializing during meal time. There was plenty of storage for our clothes in the closets and to put our luggage away for the week. The bathrooms were a good size as well.
Besides the necessities, there were a few added bonuses. My favorite was the beach chairs and the kids' favorite were the boogie boards. We all enjoyed the sand toys. The parking at the condo was easy, and there were spaces for registered guests as well. We did use the pool and grill on site and found those to be in good condition. There were also a few games and cards in the condo, which made for a fun family game night. The WiFi was nice to have too.
The location of the condo was great. We were at the beach near the condo pretty much every day. We enjoyed snorkeling from the beach and saw several magestic honu (large sea turtle) every day! We even saw whales on two of the days as it was whale season. There is a walking trail from the beach that we took south towards Wailea that was beautiful. There were tide pools along the way that the kids loved to play in and explore. The Kihei boat harbor was only a 5 minute walk down the main road, which was very convienent as our scuba diving boats took off from there. Also, there were several great restaurants and shops just a short drive from the condo.
Overall, we had a great stay. The owner, Gregory, was very prompt to respond to my questions via email and telephone. The condo was clean and we liked the location very much. If you are looking for a condo that is kid friendly and close to the beach, I would recommend this place.
Just a correction. The condo is much closer to the beach than indicated. It is not 5-10 minutes walk neither is it a few blocks. It is across the parking lot and down the driveway (approx. 500 feet) to the main road. The beach park is directly across from the driveway entrance to the property.
