  • The description and previous reviews describe John's place pretty well but I thought I'd try to help clarify a few points. I think we stayed in the Whale room and it's hard not to be impressed at what you get for your money. Kona's not a cheap place to stay and the huge bed, TV with netflix and (website hidden) (which we didn't try out, c'mon get off the internet, you're in Hawaii!!), wifi, kitchen area and bathroom were more than you'd expect from hotels many times the price. The view from the balcony across the sea is spectacular during sunset or a moonlit night. There was a second bedroom which we weren't expecting which is obviously a little girl's room (sinister barbie doll comes free), and another sofa bed in the main room so you could cram quite a few in here comfortably.

To address some of the concerns of others... the indoor rented area seemed very clean and tidy and had a nice feel to it. As with elsewhere on the island, keep doors closed to keep the beasties out, I saw one gecko in the house which, considering they're everywhere outdoors is pretty darn good.

The shared balcony area is a bit more gritty and those who are accustomed to the glittering interior of a five-star hotel may be traumatized by the appearance of a range of wildlife up to and including the local wild turkeys which popped up on the hunt for insects during our stay. The small kitchen area out here is kindof like mine during University, perfectly serviceable but would probably make my Mom tut a bit. Bear in mind all this stuff is in addition to the kitchen in the apartment and the food is basically complimentary, so don't get too worked up about it. You didn't pay for a five star hotel.

As stated in the description you're roughly a mile horizontally and a good 300 metres vertically from the sea. If you walk it, bring suncream and your own food and drink, you'll be hiking suburban wilderness for a while. When you get close to the water, don't bother turning left as there's mile upon mile of beachfront suburbia with no beach access. Turning right yielded a nice beach park with no refreshments (I burned out at this stage and started the hike back). Basically, cars are the way forward. Kona is a few miles distant, ask John for advice on local shopping as well as places to eat out in Kona. Thanks John, and say hi to the alpha male turkey for me. He's a beast.

  • We stayed four nights at John's house in the surfer studio. Our stay was average. We were not at home in the daytime because of our travels, but spent every night and morning there. While John was very nice and attempted to accommodate us as much as possible, the overall experience fell short. The cleanliness of the studio was below average, with spiders, ants, and the occasional cockroach. It would have also been helpful to know about an extra cost for an additional person, as well as added fees for "increase in utility use" because it's the cold season. If I had known about these added costs before I sent a request I would not have sent a request in the first place because it was over my budget. This was the 3rd home we rented on the island from AirBnB, the previous 2 had many more accommodations and exceeded our expectations, while matching his price or were lower. His pricing did not match the accommodations received. Also based on the description and pictures given, we were under the impression it was a studio within an apt complex, where in reality it was a locked room in his house. But there were also upsides to the studio. John himself was very friendly, offering advice, ideas for travel, sharing his fresh fruits with the guests, and the location is about 10 min by car to downtown Kona. While John has great intentions, he needs to convey them in a more efficient manner, therefore overall I wouldn't really recommend this listing to other travelers.

  • Der Vermieter war bemüht, dennoch die Unterkunft war nicht so toll. Die Möbel waren alt und abgewohnt.

  • We had a mixed experience at John's place. The host is welcoming and nice. The room is large and there is all the amenities you need. But the whole property is a mess. There is old stuff lying everywhere. The laundry room is particularly messy. There's plastic bottle, pans, old microwave and more lying around the property. We had stained bath towels. The kitchen counter was full of ants. Yes, the price is good, but the cleanliness is not there. There is potential but a good cleanup is needed, meaning getting rid of all the junk.

  • It is really the host JOHN who made my first airbnb stay a remarkable experience. I and my friend had the two-bedroom suites on the 2nd floor and i love my room. Sheets are clean and bed is comfortable. My friend's room has some smell the first day, but John took care of it right after we complained about it the 2nd day.
The outdoor hallway on the 2nd floor is amazing, with the stunning sunset ocean view and windbell singing. It felt amazing of sitting there preparing my scuba learning. :)
Also, John was very considerate of preparing every guest fruit and drink, and even pulled out the ping pong table for us. :) Normally I stay in hotel most of my trip, but spending time in his house really added a lot of flavor and fun into my trip. Also, he is so helpful when it came to helping me plan the tour seeing etc. Thank you John. And I will definitely come back.

  • John (Giovanni) greeted us with his bountiful enthusiasm, luscious fruits, a cold bottle of Pellegrino, and a warning about which spiders we should avoid as we made our way down the overgrown tropical path to our private gecko-friendly area in back. This is a warm, friendly, in touch with nature place if not luxurious, though we were comfortable, it was well stocked, and has a great bed! For greater privacy we recommend the back room (turquoise paint) which butted up against a hill with lava rock wall, orchid, and a gorgeous tree -- very quiet and peaceful, I slept great here!! We got the baby geckos to lick our fingertips, so cute!! Thanks again, John!

    March 2013
  • Sorry, but we didn't like the stay with John at all. Let me put it this way: if I want to explore nature or sleep in it - I go camping! We had ants, geckos, wild chicken, turkeys running around and a big cockroach - which eventually made us rearrange our last days of what has been until then a perfect holiday on Hawaii and we left for O'ahu earlier than planned (of course adding more costs to our holiday budget). We didn't think that the description matched what we found and would never stay there again. If I pay a lot of money - I expect at least cleaniless and honesty. John should maybe also consider that there might be people allergic against certain animals (his cat was running around freely, too and the plate with the cat's food was just outside our room... So, no wonder why all the insects etc. love staying at the hous)

    Response from John:

We offer great savings and Sarah got a chance to save so much on her stay in Hawaii as our prices where a third to half of what others where charging during her stay. We really stife to offer a great value with amenities, and extras. We feel that the value we offer is additional safety to our guests- not being forced to be exposed to very toxic sprays and also exposure to more wild life. Hawaii holds special challenges beyond our control, and Sarah appears to have let 1 bug in on her own. I am sorry too that Sarah did not give corrective actions a chance/ extra complimentary room cleaning and wild life abatement. In the Future, It is always best to report your aversions/ special needs/alergies before checking in so that hosts can be more vigilant on your behalf. Also in tropical areas you do have to be more careful to not let creatures into your unit by being more watchful when you open/close/ or leave doors open. It is important when you have aversions to wild life to let your host know in advance so they can take steps to guide you on how to avoid inviting wild life into your living area. Also be careful as many tropical destinations during the rainy season or just regular rain storms the wild life will look for shelter. I had a wolby in Kona try to get into my previous place, at 4 foot high it was an experience. A friend had a wild pig move into his place. If you have things that scare you, it is better to ask people that serve you to help. Also as far as cleaning we used cleaners and cleaning procedures that are standard in the industry- wipe walls, floor down, tiolets, shower- a higher standard that most peoples places. As far as Honesty goes some people want the toxic exposure/ wild life free place, the full service hotel then why do they book at a rustic older Hawaiian Home in Hawaii, did they want the hawaiiana expereince, the great view we have, good location, the superior amenities or was it just they could save 30%-300% on the price in the very pricy peak season. Perhaps a condo complex or full service hotel might have been a better fit. We have turned 3 people away this year after hearing their needs we recommend several full service hotels over us. For others we offer a chance to see a Hawaii that they could only dream of, life expereinces that they may never have , exotic tropical fruits and wild life, hmmm , choose for your self .

  • John is a great host and his place is lovely. You will enjoy the big beach towels and the marvelous view. You get to cook on the lanai and that means you get to mix with the other guests. I arrived a day early so John found me a lovely place and even took me there. He is accommodating in every way, he shares fruit from his trees and converses with everyone
Please rent a car because the walk to the beaches or to Kona is quite
a hike. Finding his place from the airport is super easy
Go stay with John you will enjoy it.

  • This place is awesome! Much better than the photo's show. Great space with everything you need. There is a different bed then the photo. A very comfortable queen size bed, there is a couch and a dresser with a bunch of kitchen things. You share a porch area but your space is your own.

This is a great place for people traveling around, not for the people that like everything the same and in place. It is an eccentric place with an eccentric welcoming host.

    Would go back again.

About
I am a bit of an eclectic person, I like to do cultural travel, grow tropical exotic fruit, definately into the whole health and wellness thing. I've found that I really enjoy the hosting aspect of having people come into my home and us get to know each other over the course of their stay. Maybe it's the massage therapist in me but I really enjoy the satisfaction that comes with providing a good experience for my guests, be it good advice on what to see and do, brewing fresh coffee in the morning, or having everything clean, ready, and in order when guests arrive. Having traveled a lot myself (staying in everything from hostels and guesthouses to five-star hotels), I know only too well what kinds of things are important to me in a homestay -- conveint location, clean linens, a comfy bed, helpful people that turn me onto the to do's of the place and a hot shower after a long day of traveling or sightseeing. Oh, and a friendly host, of course.. I really, really enjoy living on the Big Island of Hawaii and know it pretty well. I'm amazed every day that a place as special as this exists and that I get to call it home and I'm thrilled when I get to share it with others. Hope to see you soon!
