The neighborhood is real mexico, we are in the part of town where all the taco shops are. Within walking distance you have about ten options to eat, all very affordable and local. We are just on the opposite side of the main road from the historical district, walking it is about 15 minutes to the old down town, where you have an assortment of galleries and restaurants, its all very quaint. The beach is about 30 minutes walking or 5 minutes in a car. There is a bus station just down the street and its easy to get around on the public transit.
This place is like no other, it is relaxing, beautiful, close to everything, engaging and can be healing. Just kick back and have a beer, or take some yoga classes and do a cleanse. Its all good here.

Interaction with Guests
Most guests here interact a fair amount, although its also a nice place for some peace and quiet, as there are many a nook or a spot in the garden for some personal respite. And there are always good people around!
Tacolandia we call it sometimes. We are in a local mixed neighborhood, that is very safe and also authentic Mexico. There are many taco shops and local restaurants within close walking distance.
There is convenient public transport close by. Ask someone at the place for the number of the taxi, or simply walk down the main hill and take a local bus, you can get just about anywhere of interest in the town within 15 min.
Respect, ease, consideration, enjoyment, communication, relaxation and mindfulness.
We ask people to be themselves and to respect others. There is no curfew, the doors are open and we expect most people to know the appropriate way to treat the space and each others.
There are yoga clases most days and people resting in the evening, so we ask you to be mindful of the class schedule and noise at night. We rarely have any issues, it all seems to flow well and the guests that find us are always wonderful to have visit.
Raices y Bravos is the perfect spot if you're looking for a chill vibe in a non-touristy setting. I loved my week long stay there and by the end felt like RB was my new home away. A sweet, peaceful calm pervades this place. The common spaces (kitchen, patios, yoga room) encourage easy mixing of travelers. I'm an introvert, and was traveling alone, yet I walked away with new friends that seemed effortless to make. RyB just seems to facilitate this kind of connecting. Ed, the manager, substantially contributes to the atmosphere here with his gentle, kind attention, easy conversation, and knowledgeable San Juan information. Resident kitties Camilla and Camillo added their feline groove.
I was healing from an illness and spent several of my days just enjoying the lush garden and small salt-water pool. When I felt more adventurous, it was a piece of cake to figure the town out on foot (20-30 min walk to the beaches of the hotel zone), or to take the local city bus into town if I didn't feel like waking, or to any of the beaches along The Corridor all the way to Cabo San Lucas (about $2 from San Jose to Cabo). There were AMAZING places to eat authentic Mexican food for dirt cheap within blocks of RyB. I found the other reviews to be pretty spot on.
One thing to note is that with the category 4 hurricane (Odile) that slammed into San Juan Sept 2014, many hotels and stores along the beach have not re-opened, and many others are just getting themselves back together. At RyB, the restaurant is not currently operating, as the off-site organic farm took a heavy toll. But given the truly awesome food to be found right nearby, that wasn't an issue for me.
I can't wait to come back!
I felt like I was home. The property is peaceful, comfortable, and clean and provided an incredible feeling of serenity, safety and love. Ed is a gem and I felt as if we have been friends forever. My private room was perfect and my stay was incredible. Gracias and Love!
We came to the place right from the airport in a rental car and it was a perfect one night stay for us. We hate resort tourism so we really appreciated the fact that the place was in a real Mexican neighborhood with restaurants nearby. Really friendly people hanging around made us feel welcome. There was no lock on the door so that could be a challenge for someone staying longer. But everything felt secure. Bathroom was down the hall. Clean and lovely decorated room. Bring earplugs because there are chickens and dogs early in the morning.
We had an amazing time at Raices Y Brazos. The location is perfect, in an authentic area of town with a lot of genuine "taquerias" at walking distance. The house is really nice with a beautiful little garden. Ed and the other people staying there were all very welcoming, nice and helpful. The room was clean and corresponded to the description. We would definitely stay there again!
A beautiful, hostel-style space in San Jose. Lots of friendly folks and world travelers. People were very considerate about noise and privacy. FYI, no locks on the Center's gate (during the day) or on private room, so we took our valuables with us wen we went out. Otherwise felt very safe and welcoming.
I felt very much at home at Raices. There are many people around, it is like an instant new community is being formed every time new guests arrive and old guests are leaving, in my eyes it is quite amazing.
The place has an excellent vibe to it, it is not a luxurious place, but the common areas (kitchen, music room) are very well equipped.
Given the number of people walking in and out, cooking and taking a shower, the place is kept in excellent condition when it comes to cleanliness.
There is a short walk to town (around 10-15 minutes), but once you learn the directions and the buses in and out of town it all becomes very simple. It takes no more than few hours to get the hang of it.
And, there is the yoga, the massage..
All in all it was a splendid stay and highly recommend.
