The Space

Come stay with us in our Surf House - 2 blocks from a gorgeous surfing beach and 2 blocks from another beautiful swimming beach. I moved down to Costa Rica from NYC (trading in my high heels for flip flops!) to surf every day and enjoy the beach, and I hope you can do the same. We have a large house, and have a 2nd floor suite - with a private bathroom - available.

The room opens onto a large balcony/sundeck which overlooks our private pool. You can use the balcony to relax, read, practice yoga, drink an adult beverage... your choice!

Your room has 2 twin beds - BUNK BEDS. So if you're up for it, flip a coin for who gets the top, and enjoy.

Playa Langosta is a upscale area that's part of Tamarindo. It's a great neighborhood to stay in to enjoy Costa Rica, surf at the nearby breaks in Langosta, and walk on Tamarindo Beach, while being a little separate from Tamarindo. (In other words, you won't hear loud music at night from the clubs!) It's a 1/2 mile walk to Tamarindo to go out.

Tamarindo is an amazing place to surf. If you are interested in surfing or learning to surf, my husband is a professional surf instructor and would be happy to take you on surf tours to the fantastic surf breaks nearby, or to give you lessons - if you're just starting out.

Lastly, I'm from NYC. My husband is a Costa Rican surfer. This combination ensure we'll be able to pamper you - the way you want - but you can also get a taste of the REAL Costa Rica. If you're here during the US Winter, we'll can take you to a typical Costa Rica Fiesta, including the Rodeo. It's a LOT of fun and authentic.

  • We stay 9 nights at Helena house. She gave us excellent advise for everythings. Carlos is a very good surf teacher. The room is very clean and the a/c was essential for us. The house is in a quiet place just 1.5 km from the center of Tamarindo. The pool is grate. We had no problem with the dogs, Toby was very frendly. We recommend you to go at least once at the langosta beach and to cross the river, you will have 1km of private marvelous beach. We highly recommend this place.

  • We loved our stay at Helena's. It was a nice calm walk to Tamarindo beach (about 2km), and even closer to Langosta beach (although we didn't get a chance to check it out). Her place is just outside of all the buzz of the Tamarindo centre, which was nice. Helena and her family were so welcoming, and very caring. This room was huge, with 2 beds and a beautiful washroom! It exceeded our expectations!!! The day we arrived, I was so excited to go surfing and Helena's husband Carlos was willing to take me, it was awesome. Helena is super organized, and even printed off recommendations for restaurants and activities in the area! Can't describe enough how great the stay was. I would stay here again, thank you so much!

  • Though located a distance from Tamarindo, this was a nice enough place to stay. The cleanliness of the space was fine, and the AC was much appreciated in the hot temperatures.
The walk into/from town was daunting in the evenings (and longer than expected). Upon arriving at the house each day, we experienced a 10-20 min period of trying to coax their dog, Toby into letting us back into their house. On one occasion, Toby showed significant aggression, and this made us feel extremely uncomfortable entering/exiting the space. When we shared this with the host, they expressed no concern.
I would recommend establishing a check-in/check-out time with this host prior to booking the space, as we encountered an unfortunate situation/misunderstanding which resulted in the host demanding extra money from us at the end of our stay.
While in Costa Rica, we found several more enjoyable places to stay.

    Response from Helena:

Good to know about our dog, Toby. We will address this, as now we've heard this 1x before, so it's clearly an issue.

We spoke clearly the night before you left about check-out time, and the fact that the room would be cleaned at noon to prepare for our next guest, and would NOT be available, beyond leaving your bags there. Yet you went in and showered and basically required us to clean the room AGAIN... which cost us money. It was Good Friday during Easter Week, and we were keeping our cleaning staff late to clean up after you. All very confusing, because we had discussed it, AND when you returned from the beach, my husband offered another bathroom in which to shower - as a courtesy.

Hence the resolution discussion - which was a discussion, not a demand - while I drove you into town for free, the 2nd or 3rd time I offered you a free ride. As a lodging option, like a hotel, we have to prepare our rooms for guests and we have a checkout time. And we discussed this prior to the situation.

This could have been resolved via airbnb or outside... however I thought it was more cordial to talk about it face to face, rather than after the fact. This is also how it would've been handled if you were checking out of a hotel.

I've been so puzzled about this situation, because we sat down and discussed it the day before... but perhaps your memory was clouded as you were on vacation and having a great time (as you should.)

Ultimately, our staff stayed and cleaned the room again for no extra charge to us, so we didn't pursue any resolution...though it would've been within our right to do so.

  • Helena and her family were just lovely. We had a great time staying at their place and it was exactly as Helena described it. Surf lessons with Carlos were great. The beach was approx a 5min walk from their place and town about 15min. Helena was very informative about what to do and where to eat etc. It was a great week and would defiantly recommend it to others. Thanks again! Hope to be back soon :)

  • My boyfriend and I just returned from a week's stay with Helena and her husband, Carlos. Their home is conveniently located within walking distance to both Tamarindo and Langosta beaches. The room is private and comes with a/c and hot water (I understand that these can be hard to come by in CR).

As mentioned by other reviewers, Helena arranged for us to be picked up at the airport (and returned to the airport at the end of our trip). She was also a great resource prior to our arrival (i.e., recommending restaurants and excursions). I've never surfed before, but got a surf lesson from Carlos. He was very patient with me and the lesson helped a lot. I don't think I would have lasted 2 hours without his help and encouragement.

We had a great stay; great weather; and lots to see and do in Tamarindo/Langosta.

  • Great place to stay.....away from the noise and bustle of Tamarindo, but not so far that one can't get to town within 15 minutes by walking. I only got to meet Helena briefly because she was out of town, but Carlos was an excellent host, allowing me to use his cell phone to contact the airlines and his bike to go for rides. A great experience!

  • Great experience all the way around. Helena is very detail oriented. She helped me coordinate a shuttle based on my itinerary and although she wasn't in town, she had some responsible friends help me out when I arrived. In fact, we all ended up surfing and hanging out together. One thing- If you are not scared to drive in CR, I recommend renting a car. There are beaches within walking distance, but to maximize surfing potential, you'll want to chase the tides to alternate beaches. I would definitely stay here again.

Mi Ola
Hi! My name is Helena Fogarty. I'm the owner and founder of Mi Ola Surf. I lived in Manhattan (LES) for 15 years and worked in fashion, before relocating down to Costa Rica. Yes - I'm one of those people who actually ditched the city and moved to paradise. Due to my business, I am commuting back to NYC often and using Airbnb to help me find affordable and great accommodations (THANK YOU!) I will be coming to the city 1 or 2 times a month for a couple days with my business partner to sell Mi Ola and look for investors. I would love to stay in your place, and have you be part of the Mi Ola success story!
