Our vacation home is designed and built by David, a local artist and builder. It is spacious, secluded, charming and 'green' in every sense! Surrounded by lush jungle foliage, the home is sustainably built with many reclaimed, recycled and salvaged materials, including native ohia logs salvaged from cleared land. Because David is such an innovative craftsman, he was able to find use for so many items we found over the years and incorporate them so beautifully into our rental home. Many of the building materials were left over from houses he had built. Even shipping crates have been re-formed into various furnishings.

Very spacious and clean and nicely decorated. You are in the midst of a rainforest with birds and frogs and beautiful flowers. The hosts were very helpful - great tips for Volcano and Puna. Awesome snorkeling in tide pools about 30 mins away.

My wife and I had a great stay! The description of the home is very accurate - tons of space, private setting, artistically constructed and decorated. We really had everything we needed. The location is perfect home base for sightseeing on this side. David is very friendly and had a lot of good tips for us as newcomers to the Big Island. Highly Recommended!

A RELAXING STAY

My girlfriend and I stayed for a week at this rental. We had a marvelous time. We were far away from the usual day-to-day life in Honolulu and enjoyably so. Our hosts were always there when we needed them but were very circumspect about leaving us our privacy. One of the highlights, though, of the trip was a trip to a series of lava tubes there on the property, led by the owner and his two young sons. Yes, it's a rainy location, but one needs the rain at times for cuddling, watching movies, sleeping deeply, and growing the great green rainforest all around. Highly recommended for those of you, like us, want to escape into a different world for a while.

I am so blessed that my family and I had the opportunity to stay here. It was exactly what we needed. My favorite room was the master bedroom, waking up to pink hibiscus seen through the huge picture window, and the gentle cooling breeze. The location was perfect for getting around Puna too. It was right in the middle, so we could go up to Volcano National Park, and zip down to Pohoiki, the Hot Pond, Kehena Beach, the cliffs in HPP, and then go into Hilo for whatever we needed. Thank you Dave and Sharon for your hospitality, for showing us around, and for helping us adjust to life in Hawaii!

I had the pleasure of staying at this rental for ten days this last November. The unit has a great location almost between Hilo and Volcano in addition to being very near the quaint village of Pahoa. It is also in close proximity to the following magnificent parks: Lava Tree, Isaac Hale and MacKenzie. For the really adventurous, the property actually has on premises access to a vast network of underground lava tubes that seem to go on forever. If you are looking for a cozy, comfortable place in a beautiful rustic and tranquil Hawaiian setting, this is the place for you. I plan to stay there whenever I am on the Hilo Side of the Big Island.

Hawaii Forest Retreat was perfect for two couples who enjoy escaping from the tourist hubbub. The home is simple, but cozy, with everything you need to be comfortable...a very spacious kitchen and two large bedrooms (plus another bedroom that we didn't use), and one of the bedrooms has an included screen porch. The house is very private, you cannot see any neighboring houses. You feel like you are in the jungle, with frog, bird and gecko choruses. We enjoyed staying in this charming place.
Communicating with David and Sharon was quick and easy and we saw David briefly while we were there. This is an unusual, very rustic cottage. I would say that the photos make it seem more "quaint" than it is - it is truly rustic for an adventuresome family. We were booked for two nights but ended up staying only one for two reasons: 1) a big rain storm was predicted the next day and the long entry drive is unpaved with pretty deep ruts, so we were worried about getting in and out with our rental car; and 2) the "master" bedroom was fine, but the second significant bedroom has screens (i.e. no windows) which meant that my son and daughter-in-law felt like they were in the jungle including hearing jungle sounds all night - they, unfortunately, did not sleep well (the third bedroom had a musky odor due to the dampness and neither of the ladies wanted to sleep there). While it says that it is in the Volcano area, it is much closer to Hilo than to Volcano. It was much further from the Volcano National Park and further off the "main road" between Hilo and the Park than we expected. It is also not easy to find the driveway, particularly if you are arriving in the dark. All in all, a memorable experience.
Staying in David and Sharon's place is a really cool experience! There are so many large beautiful windows in the house that show off the fact that you are right in the middle of a rainforest! Lots of very loud frogs and insect noises outside all contribute to the outdoor experience. The house is spotless, beautifully furnished and really well provided for. David built the houses himself... amazing!
We visited the lava tube on site ourselves. One of the highlights of our trip for sure! We only had two nights and a lot to do/see with two small kids but David had some fantastic suggestions and basically curated a cool road trip for us.
We would definitely recommend staying here. Enjoy it!
The reservation was canceled 50 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
I had a wonderful stay. The address sent to me & on air BnB was incorrect so we had a little run around finding it, it is in a different area than posted, about 20 min away. House was on a lovely property with fruit trees all over. David was so kind as to give us a tour of the lave tube on the property, of which was the best of any we had seen. This was a great and fun bonus to the trip. The Eco home in general was very comfortable and roomy. The house needed fans on humid days/nights that David provided on request, but non were resident on site otherwise. Loud frogs everywhere at night(outside). I liked the jungle feel but my friend was a little creeped out by night time noise, so I would recommend earplugs for sensitive sleepers. Not recommended for those, whom like my friend, get creeped out by seeing a few bugs(no mosquito's) or geckos here and there since its to be expected in a rustic(open aired/screened) eco cottage. My experience here gave me the jungle feel I was looking for & I would recommend this place to friends for sure!
We enjoyed the open air windows that allowed us to feel a real part of the rain forest environment. Beautiful surroundings including many blooming tropical flowers. The house was clean and well equipped. It was great to have access to the washer and dryer since we got rained on in the Park. The only shortcoming would be the shower if you like it strong or hot as I do.
My husband, myself, and our 2- and 3-year-old boys had a wonderful stay at David & Sharon's little cottage. (It's not "little," either; we only used half of the available beds and never even touched one bedroom -- this would be a great rental for slightly larger groups/families.) We loved the privacy but found David to be extremely responsive, friendly, and helpful.
The cacophony of frogs provided a lovely nocturnal soundtrack (my initials fears of not being able to sleep were totally unfounded), and the trees and vegetation made for a neat ambiance. (But do bring the repellent -- the mozzies [outside] were ferocious at dusk.) Coming over from Kailua (Oahu), it was really nice to enjoy some cooler evenings, too!
Finally, if for no other reason, stay here because the lava tubes tour that David took us on was AMAZING! We had done the Thurston tube slog the prior day and it was so anemic compared the incredible tubes that we got to see in our back yard. The colors were incomparable, and our kids got a kick out of the stalactites. Super cool to see that piece of the geology of this island.
Will certainly be recommending to friends (and to whomever you are reading this -- stay here!) Mahalo for the wonderful week.
We are Sharon and David and we live on the same 9 acres as our vacation rental, so we will be your distant neighbors! We have three children (ages 8-12), three dogs, and a guinea pig. David is a builder and artist, Sharon works for a non-profit community health center and the children are all Waldorf educated and swim for a swim team. Our weekends are filled with swim meets and beach outings!
