Our vacation home is designed and built by David, a local artist and builder. It is spacious, secluded, charming and 'green' in every sense! Surrounded by lush jungle foliage, the home is sustainably built with many reclaimed, recycled and salvaged materials, including native ohia logs salvaged from cleared land. Because David is such an innovative craftsman, he was able to find use for so many items we found over the years and incorporate them so beautifully into our rental home. Many of the building materials were left over from houses he had built. Even shipping crates have been re-formed into various furnishings.

Very spacious and clean and nicely decorated. You are in the midst of a rainforest with birds and frogs and beautiful flowers. The hosts were very helpful - great tips for Volcano and Puna. Awesome snorkeling in tide pools about 30 mins away.

My wife and I had a great stay! The description of the home is very accurate - tons of space, private setting, artistically constructed and decorated. We really had everything we needed. The location is perfect home base for sightseeing on this side. David is very friendly and had a lot of good tips for us as newcomers to the Big Island. Highly Recommended!

My girlfriend and I stayed for a week at this rental. We had a marvelous time. We were far away from the usual day-to-day life in Honolulu and enjoyably so. Our hosts were always there when we needed them but were very circumspect about leaving us our privacy. One of the highlights, though, of the trip was a trip to a series of lava tubes there on the property, led by the owner and his two young sons. Yes, it's a rainy location, but one needs the rain at times for cuddling, watching movies, sleeping deeply, and growing the great green rainforest all around. Highly recommended for those of you, like us, want to escape into a different world for a while.

I am so blessed that my family and I had the opportunity to stay here. It was exactly what we needed. My favorite room was the master bedroom, waking up to pink hibiscus seen through the huge picture window, and the gentle cooling breeze. The location was perfect for getting around Puna too. It was right in the middle, so we could go up to Volcano National Park, and zip down to Pohoiki, the Hot Pond, Kehena Beach, the cliffs in HPP, and then go into Hilo for whatever we needed. Thank you Dave and Sharon for your hospitality, for showing us around, and for helping us adjust to life in Hawaii!

I had the pleasure of staying at this rental for ten days this last November. The unit has a great location almost between Hilo and Volcano in addition to being very near the quaint village of Pahoa. It is also in close proximity to the following magnificent parks: Lava Tree, Isaac Hale and MacKenzie. For the really adventurous, the property actually has on premises access to a vast network of underground lava tubes that seem to go on forever. If you are looking for a cozy, comfortable place in a beautiful rustic and tranquil Hawaiian setting, this is the place for you. I plan to stay there whenever I am on the Hilo Side of the Big Island.

  • Fantastic experience on the Big Island. The cottage's serene location and authenticity was a beautiful enhancement of our experience on the Big Island. The cave is awesome - with some more planning we could have done a whole day hike in there! Nature's sounds abound near the cottage, from frogs to birds. Sharon and David were great hosts, in communication via emails and texts throughout the stay. We very much enjoyed our stay, and would stay with them again.

  • One of a kind place about 30 mins from Hilo and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. My wife and I liked having a full kitchen, laundry, and grill to use in this forest retreat. Cool breakfast nook on the second floor feels like a treehouse!

  • My family had the opportunity to experience the dynamic splendor of a tropical jungle with stunning lava tubes in an incredible peaceful, charming, clean and comfortable home environment. We created incredible memories of 2013 Christmas and 2014 New Year that will remember for a long time. Sharon and David are the best hosts ever and their house is so cute!

  • David's place is located in a lovely spot in the middle of the wilderness. One can only hear birds and other wildlife, no cars or traffic!
The house has an interesting architecture with multiple split levels which our boys liked.
Dave gave us a tour of his lava tube located only a few hundred meters from the house, it was great. We can recommend this BNB to anyone who wishes to experience the real Hawaiien jungle and wilderness.

  • Amazing house in the jungle! You must see the lava tube! Unbelievable!

    November 2013
  • The house was fantastic, just as described. Set into the woods, a magical location and very good for those interested in exploring the Volcano National Park and other areas on this side of the island. The lava cave tour was also excellent. Do check your address and directions prior to arrival and make contact with the hosts before you get there.

    August 2013
  • The perfect place to get away near Hawaii Volanoes National Park. David and Sharon were great hosts. They even took us on a tour of their very own section of lava tube. (Very cool, but it's not a paved park trail. Be prepared to climb and crawl.) The house was very comfortable with screen windows to let in the breeze and the sounds of nature at night. We had a great stay. Thank you!

    August 2013
  • Sharon and David's Rustic Hawaiian Cottage was a laid back place for our family to spend time inland on the Big Island. Close to Volcanoes National Park (for night viewing) and the fantastic Kapoho tide pools (for snorkeling with the provided gear) their place is an artful haven in the middle of a flower jungle. And the other two lava tubes we saw didn't compare to theirs. We'd be back next month, if only we lived closer....

    July 2013
  • The map on airbnb is wrong but once we looked up the address on (website hidden) we were fine. The house is in the rainforest, with lots of lovely flowers and was great for our group of seven. It was well located between the volcanoes national park, Hilo and the lava tree park. It had all it needed and was fine for our group of seven. David saved us a pile of money by recommending Harveys Rentals in Hilo as the only place on the island that lets you drive their 4WD vehicles to the top of Mauna Kea. Doing that cost $150 all up for seven, instead of about $200 each on a tour.

    July 2013
  • Great place for a relaxing stay. The hosts were very hospitable and flexible. The home was well stocked with all the amenities one would need. The Lava Tube experience was very worth while and surpassed my expectation. No more that 1/2 hour from Hilo and/or Volcano National Park. We live on the west side of the island and really appreciated the peace and tranquility that this setting had to offer. We were a party of 4 and all loved it.
