An hour from Dublin and Belfast and mid-way between the two, on the east coast, this GEM of a property is a 2-bed, 2-storey house, built in 1727, this nearly-300 year old home has been recently gutted and totally renovated, fully restored with many original features and furnished to make you feel right at home.
Walk out your front door to stunning views of the Mountains of Mourne, have your morning cup of tea listening to the waves and plan your day hiking, pleasure-crafting, taking in the local medieval sights, taking the ferry from your front door to across the lough to Warrenpoint for an afternoon of wining and dining, shopping in Ireland's premier shopping district (6 miles/a world away) or simply strolling to the shop for the paper and to take some air along the shorefront among the most breath-taking views of the best landscape in Ireland. This location cannot be beaten.
The house is the first stone house to ever have been built in the village. No 1 Strand Road is one of four houses built in 1727 that comprise 'The Coastguards'; famous buildings scattered along the coastlines of Ireland built to guard seafarers and house generations of landed English gentry (and later Irish rebels)! This house is steeped in history and, in the hands of its current owner, has been lovingly restored to its former glory as a cosy dwelling with an open-fire at the hearth and original pane glass sash windows and shutters looking out over the sea - at night-time, boats reflecting their lights in the water pass silently along the lough.
When you enter the house, an open plan 50-foot view meets you at the front door. There is a huge kitchen, with all mod cons, and a warm wooden welcoming vaulted ceiling, dining table that seats 6-8, ceiling to floor windows overlooking a 50-foot back garden with trees and a small patio area for al fresco dining, and a down feather plush red couch with a heavy set 4x4ft coffee table and chairs. The living room is carpeted with a leather sofa and chairs and coffee table. The fireplace hearth was specially hand-made by a local artisan to fit the larger than normal fireplace.
This house has been lovingly restored. The bathroom downstairs has an electrically heated (instant hot water) two-person bath, and upstairs there are two double bedrooms; a smaller bedroom to the rear, with a wrought-iron double bed and fitted wardrobe and cupboards, overlooking the garden and Cooley mountain range and the master bedroom, the width of the house to the front, with two large sash windows overlooking the sea, an original cast iron (recently dipped and painted) fireplace, sanded and stained floorboards and an en suite with bath and and shower.
Public transport runs every hour from Dublin airport to Newry (10 mins taxi ride away) and from Belfast Bus Station.
This is the perfect retreat for anyone wanting to soak up the natural beauty of the best of Ireland's scenery, engage in water sports, seek out medieval Ireland, or anyone wanting to have a fantastic base an hour from the two main airports at Dublin and Belfast, or for exploring this magical island, or just wanting to hide away to finish a novel or other pursuit, with just the landscape and the locals in the pubs for company.

Great location and price! Near a lot of the action, and easy subway access to get to other parts of the city. The beds (one bed and one futon) were comfortable and everything was neat/clean. It is a little tight on space, and there is no living room area, so it's hard for more than 2 people to hang out anywhere except the bedroom, but we were in NYC to see the town and not hang out in the apartment, so it didn't affect us much. Suzanne was really gracious, prompt and helpful with everything, so overall, a good experience!
This was a clean, safe, small apartment in a convenient location. No frills, but all the basics were covered -- a place to sleep, to eat and get washed up. The room was a reasonable size for two friends in NYC for an event. It could have worked for three as well (as long as people don't crave personal space or mind sharing a bed!) or even a family of four, although I imagine things might be cramped in the rest of the apartment with that many people. You will certainly see how many New Yorkers live -- not in their apartments (because of their size), but out and about in the city! The local area can be hopping at night with upscale bars and restaurants, a young crowd, but makes the area safe and populated for coming back at night. Great, reasonably-priced places to eat. I used the nearby subway to get around to everything. The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is just down Orchard St.
Suzanne was a great host. She was not there while we stayed in her apartment, but she helped us every time when it was needed. It started with the guide to arrive from the airport to her apartment. The location is perfect. She gave some great advises about the neighborhood that made our first stay in NYC unforgettable. Thank you!

Just a wonderful host! It turned out that Suzanne was away most of the time we were there, so it turned into a private apartment for us. She has a full list of neighborhood amenities, and there are even more than she listed.
Unfortunately, I ended up not making my trip to NYC, so I wasn't able to stay at Suzanne's place. She went out of her way to make me feel welcome before the stay though! She sent me a great neighborhood guide full of information should any situation arise; she also included a guide on how to get to her place from the 3 major airports. I will definitely stay at her place next time I'm in NYC.
Maja was the perfect host. Picked me up from the ferry, recommended the wonderful Lola restaurant ( worth a special trip to Vis). And the apartment was cute and comfortable and had the best views of the water and yachts as well. Lovely.

Suzanne was very sweet and really accomodating to all of our needs and great with follow up and communication. My husband and I needed a place to crash to be able to travel on foot to wedding we were going to that evening and then also close to my friend's show the following day - both on the lower East Side and we saved tons of money just being able to get to our destinations easily on foot which is exactly what we were able to do from Suzanne's apartment. She even offered to let us leave our luggage in the apt later than normal just to help us out. It was pretty cool neighborhood and sure beat paying the price of almost or above four hundred dollars just to stay in NYC. Plus we were staying in the heart of a cool funky neighborhood with lots of cool restaurants and night sights to see!
Suzanne is a great host, and the location is fantastic. The area is full of things to do during day and night.
