  • Karen was great. Offered to let me use her bike, which was unexpected!
Easy parking. Very easy checkin and checkout, which is not always the case.
Good sized apartment, and very quiet.
Bring eyeshades; the bedroom gets a fair amount of light in the am.
Highly recommended apartment with a great host.

  • Karen's apartment is in a nice clean area with access to the grocery store and a short distance from downtown. The interior looked almost exactly like the picture here except for an additional rack that held a few spare blankets. Our trip was during the colder part of the year and the fireplace was great. We had no trouble finding parking on the street in front of her home. It took us about 10 minutes to get to downtown by car. I would say that this is a good deal - We stayed at a hotel downtown for the first few days of our trip to SFO and then we switched to a couple of days at Karen's place. Karen's place was better for about the same money. Everything went smoothly for us. Thanks Karen.

  • Karen was a gracious host and her place was clean and welcoming. I was traveling mainly uptown so the drive could range from 15-20 minutes but it was well worth it, given that there was abundant street parking which was convenient since I rented a car. Wifi was good and the apartment was right down the street from a market which was super convenient.

  • We had chosen Karen's apartment because of location, nice pictures in her add and fabulous reviews. Karen had instructed us, that she would not be there at the arranged arrival time. But she would let us in through her cell-phone connected to the intercom system of the apartment building. For any sudden events or urgent changes, I left my cell-phone number with Karen.

We arrived at the agreed time, but nobody opened the door. No information, no way to communicate, I just got Karen's voice mail, no call-back from her either. Not so pleasant miles away from home after a long journey.
After more than half an hour, we were able to convince a merciful neighbor to let us into the building. Her apartment door is open and there is a person in the room. He tells us, that we are too early! Finally he concedes that we have been on time. He even admits that he saw us waiting outside the building!
There were spots and stains on the carpet, walls, counters and furniture. When we mentioned the lack of cleanness, he offered us to leave. We told him, that this is unfortunately not an option for us: we are tired, in a foreign city and the rent is already collected from us.

The contrast in the Airbnb-published pictures is high, so you don't see the spots and stains. The refrigerator was dirty and filled with food, so we had to make some space and clean it first. The furniture was old. Especially the kitchen drawers were falling apart. The dishwasher regularly over-flowed to the counter and then the fuse of the waste disposal turned off - I was concerned about safety.
The paint of the bathroom ceiling was flaking off. The blinds in the living room were broken, so at night you are “on display”.
There was not the slightest empty space in a closet or drawer, so we had to “live out of the suitcases”
If you don't mind these circumstances: the neighborhood is nice, there is ample street parking, a quick walk to the supermarket and short drives to downtown.

    Response from Karen:

This apartment is located in a very peaceful environment. Yes, there are a few superficial imperfections but overall the apartment is very comfortable and all linens and towels are freshly laundered for each guest. The apartment is professionally cleaned and disinfected with chlorine based products and vacuumed and dusted in between vacationers. I have recently painted the bathroom ceiling because the paint was starting to peel away because of the moisture from the shower as Arno indicated in his review.

The apartment is completely safe. When the dishwasher is used it shuts off the garbage disposal and the switch has to be flipped on at the fusebox in the bedroom closet (the disposal switch is clearly marked in the box). It is not a big deal.

For guest storage there is a garment rack with hangers and I added a hanging shelving unit in the extra changing space next to the bathroom. The room is big enough for storage of all of the guests luggage. The closets and drawers in the bedroom store all of my personal items and really are not available to the guests.

I had a very bad experience with Arno and his wife when they stayed at my apartment for nearly a week in February. His wife's behavior was irrational, unreasonable and unpredictable. I do not recommend that you rent your home to them because they were very difficult. Unfortunately, Arno informed me of a change in their arrival time a week before their arrival off of the regular Airbnb platform from 3pm to 2pm. I highly recommend that all correspondence be on the AirBnB platform as a reference. After I got the first voicemail from them I sent them a message through AirBnB and Arno's email to call right back on the security phone and I left them the cell phone of the person that was meeting them upon their arrival. I informed them that I was able to arrange for someone to meet them at the apartment because I had to be somewhere else at the time of their arrival. He was expecting them at 3pm. It was unfortunate that we were unable to connect on my cell phone for 20 minutes. My neighbor begrudgingly let them in the building because Arno's wife had lost all composure and was yelling at him when he walked by the door. She went upstairs to my apartment and barged through the apartment door and startled the person that was waiting to check her and Arno into the apartment. It was a rough start to the relationship because of the mixup with the arrival time. After Arno and his wife argued with their greeter about the arrival time he tried to welcome them to the apartment and offered to show them details about living there. After they did their initial walk through of the apartment they said the apartment was dirty but were unable to give specific examples on the spot. The greeter called me on the cell phone because he felt the guests were too difficult to please. They had nothing but complaints about staying at the apartment and were offered their money back if they chose to leave. They did not want to look for another place and decided that they would rather stay because they had already paid. I later called back and left a followup voicemail on Arno's phone that I would refund them all of their money if they were unsatisfied and wanted to move to another vacation home. Again they decided they wanted to stay at my apartment. I really felt so uncomfortable having these people remain in my home because I thought their behavior was unpredictable. Arno's wife was so irrational and explosive.

  • Karen's place in Diamond Heights was a great location to spend our time. We stayed with our one year old, and took advantage of the nearby grocery store, two parks, and a nice canyon to hike down. The home itself is well appointed with a garden view and a very comfortable bed and everything else you'd need to get through the day. Karen also checked with us regularly to make sure we were OK.

  • Karen was a great host! We had a great time in her flat. Had everything we needed. She was so kind to explain the basics. Flat was very comfortable and cosy. We had the fireplace ( nope it was not that cold and the tV on demand :) ...... overall a great SF experience with a very kind host ....and that was KAREN ! ....parking was not a problem at all for our car. You will enjoy it at Karen's place.

  • Karen's apartment was beautifully decorated in a very nice part of the city. I was there for business so I didn't do much there other than sleep, but the apartment is very clean and quiet, which is exactly what I needed. She kept the apartment well stocked for the forgetful traveler (in my case, I left my shampoo/body wash at home, which I found she had in the shower), and she was incredibly fast and cordial during our communications. I would be happy to stay here again.

  • We had a great 9-day stay in Karens place in Diamond Heights! Karen met us at arrival (10.30pm) and was sweet and helpful. The apartment was clean, with lots of space and a huge bed.
