My son and I had a fabulous time staying at Jack's place for seven nights following his graduation from college. We arrived via Amtrak at Union Station and took the metro to Columbia Heights to get to his condo. His directions made it easy to find. We walked. We both travel light--carry on bags only--so it was not difficult to manage the few blocks on foot. Travelers with more baggage might need to take a cab. Jack called to make sure we had arrived and we had everything we needed. We did. Beds were very comfortable and we both slept well the entire visit. The place is quiet--the bedrooms are in the back and there was no street noise at night. Neighbors quiet too. The location was terrific for us. We hit the metro to downtown every morning and spent the day seeing the sights--neither of us had been to DC before. Did not need a car. We came home to the condo in the early evening and it was a great haven after long days. We walked to Harris Teeters for groceries--a few blocks away--and often took an evening stroll in beautiful Meridian Park, a block (website hidden). Augustine Catholic Church is just down the street, the mother church of the African American Catholic community in DC. I walked there for Mass on Sunday, an additional bonus to the location of the condo for me. The place was truly perfect for my son and me. Jack was a great host--checking in to make sure we had everything we needed, but not intrusive at all. Our last day we sat out a rain storm at Pleasant Pops off U Street where Jack had arranged a special sweet treat for us! A wonderful trip and a great place to stay!
We had a great experience staying in Jack's home. Great restaurants and parks within walking distance. When our plans changed last minute, he was very accommodating and flexible. Would definitely stay here again.
Hands down the worst AirBnb experience to date. Listing indicates “Luxury” apt but our experience was anything but. 500 word limit isn’t enough but main items include:
Apartment not as advertised.
•Very dark and somber especially the bedroom which was dark/ominous and not the bright blue as seen in the pictures.
• Unwelcoming: All of the closet spaces were cluttered or completely occupied with host’s belongings! Never unpacked our bags.
•No TV in living room: Picture on AirBnB shows TV is placed in the living room. This is not the case.
•Ad says 3 bedrooms and sleeps 7. There is only 1 bed and 1 bunk bed. Even if you slept people on the couches you'd sleep 5 at most.
•Mischaracterization of fireplace - it is not real only a visual one.
•Shower not working properly and needed to be replaced. (No shampoo)
•Found in the apartment for every day of our stay! Total count of 5 different silverfish and a beetle. There seems to be an infestation issue in the bathroom that should be addressed.
• Many of the dishes, cups and utensils needed to be washed by us once we arrived.
•There is an area in the apartment where the floor is distinctly protruding from the ground. The first day when we got there my partner tripped and fell to the ground - there should be some warning signs advising guests of this!
Host was aggressive, overly defensive and unpleasant to deal with when I tried to inform him about the various issues with the apartment. including the insects, our discomfort with the place and our desire to leave.
•At many times he dismissively stated that it’s just a bug and that we should get over it. Also tried to insinuate that since we were coming from Texas we should be used to this kind of thing.
•Kept cutting me off several times and wouldn’t listen to my concerns. When I told him we were not comfortable with the place his basic answer was too bad and that this was not a good reason for me to “breach” our contract. He also told me that his place “isn’t a hotel”.
• When I told the host that I had found an iron but couldn’t find an ironing board he told me to look around in the various cabinets but that most likely I wouldn't find one. He then said that he didn’t advertise an ironing board in a very defensive tone. I was just trying to understand how I should iron my shirts and at that point he said that he uses the countertop on the kitchen island.
Initially Jack was welcoming but once I tried to address my concerns his demeanor completely changed. His communication is prompt and the apt location is central. But you’ll surely find a much better place to stay.
Got a refund but thoroughly unpleasant experience! Worst by far…
We had a great time at Jack's apartment. The location is fantastic and the apartment was as described and has everything you need. There was enough space for our 2-year old to play around. We lacked a bit more daylight during his naps. We parked our rental chevrolet suburban in the parking lot with not that much of an effort. Check-in and out were really easy and Jack was very flexible, easy to reach for questions and very helpfull.
Jack's place was great and just as pictured. The location was perfect for what we needed, but also great access to the buses downtown. The apt. was clean, well stocked and safe. Having the parking spot was a big plus as parking in all of DC is terrible. Having such close access to the park was a great way to get out and just relax.
Jack was a great host. Responsive and professional. The apartment had everything we needed.
