Room in Swiss Alps near lift

Apartment - Private room · Kirchgasse, Meiringen, Bern 3860, Switzerland

The Space

10 minute walk to cable car which takes you directly to the ski /hiking area. Our village, Meiringen, has its own train station which is 4 minutes from our house, walking. Public transportation in the area is excellent.

In a 100-year-old former hotel, we have a lovely 5-room apartment with long corridors, high ceilings, many tall windows, and 2 full baths, one with a bathtub and one with a shower. The kitchen and both baths as well as the double-paned windows are no more than 4 years old. Our guests would have a comfy mattress (or 2) on the floor of my coaching office, which we would not use during your stay, as well as the use of the bathroom with shower. We do not use this bathroom except to shower and we'd coordinate that with your needs. You are free to use the kitchen (we can coordinate cooking times) and of course the living room.
We would provide breakfast makings for you and show you where things are in the kitchen (Included in the price)

Our work schedules are quite irregular, and we do not want to commit to being full-time hosts who show you all around.
We are a happily married American couple, age 58, with two grown sons, one of whom is living at home currently. We have traveled a fair amount ourselves and worked for many years in a multicultural setting, so we love to meet people from different cultures. While we might not always have time to do things with you, we can provide tips for travel in Switzerland and especially for hikes and skiing in this region. There are endless possibilities for hiking and climbing for all levels. We both speak German and English and KC speaks French as well.

The apartment is in the very center of lovely Meiringen, a village of 5,000 people between Interlaken (35 minutes by train) and Lucerne (75 minutes by train). It has all amenities you really need. The train station is a 5 mins. walk from our house. There are many restaurants in town and in the area, 2 grocery stores, hardware stores, florists, gift shops, an outdoor and indoor pool, climbing and bouldering gym, skateboard park, and tennis, and many tourist attractions primarily geared to the outdoors. There is easy access to the lovely hiking/ski area Hasliberg as well as to other hiking/ski areas in the region. Sherlock Holmes fans love to come here because "The Final Problem" took place here. There is a tiny Sherlock Holmes museum and a special hike to commemorate this.
The region is well known for paragliding, sport climbing, its gorges and five exquisite alpine valleys with attending passes. The Aare gorge is right in town and the even more dramatic Rosenlaui gorge is a hike/bus/car ride from here in our favorite alpine valley - Rosenlaui, as well as a gateway to the Susten, Grimsel and Joch passes, Trift glacier hanging bridge, the steepest funicilar to Gelmer Lake, and much more.

There are trains to Interlaken twice an hour at 0.22 and 0.51 after the hour. The trip takes about 35 minutes and costs Sfr 25.20 round-trip for a full-price ticket. Interlaken is heavily touritsted largely due to the train to the Top of Europe (about Sfr 100 per person.

There are trains to Lucerne once an hour at 0.41 past the hour. This trip takes 75 minutes and costs about Sfr 30 round-trip at full-price. Lucerne is on a beautiful large lake and has a lovely old town and is for many visitors their favorite city in Switzerland.

The local Swiss Tourist Office requires us to charge a tax that is used to pay for the tourist infrastructure of the region. It is 3 francs per adult per night (1 franc for kids under 16). We will collect this from you upon arrival. Sorry! You do receive reductions on some local attractions after paying this tax.

The Neighborhood

There is so much available in this village of just 4,800 people and it is breathtakingly beautiful. Everything I could need or want for a contented life are within about 10 minutes walk from my front door.

  • Due to unexpected cold weather we have cancelled our schedule and arrive Meiringen 10hours earlier. We are so surprised & touched to see KC & phoebe greet us at train station! KC provide us very helpful information and direction how to get to their house and introduce us some nice shop & restaurant to eat. KC even suggested some interesting place to visit of and his plan worked! We enjoyed the Gondel ride to Riote so much :)
KC& Kathleen's room is spacious and warm and the bed is so comfortable to sleep.
Kathleen had been so kind to lend some warm cloths make sure we don't catch cold. They are a very sincere and concerned person. We had a great time sharing with them our experience and photos during our trip to Europe. And to not forget Pheobe, a lovely and royal dog! She is so cute we love her so much ^^ we found out she didn't like take photo haha!
We had a memorable short stay in Kathleen and KC's and we thanked to them for the accommodation. We will definitely come back next time if we come Switzerland again:)

  • Another great stay with Kathleen and KC. My work schedule was quite hectic during the week and they were very flexible with my erratic schedule, with breakfast always ready when I wanted it and easy access to the apartment despite the late hours. In the future I hope to take advantage of their proximity to the cable car to do some skiing and enjoy their hospitality more instead of just working the whole time.

  • KC & Kathleen are wonderful host which filled our stays in Switzerland with great memories with the warm welcome from the families, including Phoebe :) ~
It really touched our heart when woke up in the early morning and saw the kitchen's light is on which KC is preparing the breakfast for us, it's just like our parents who will do so.
Really appreciate the advice, experience sharing etc,
Definitely recommend this lovely HOME to everyone out there who travel around.

KC & Kathleen, will visit you all again whenever there is a chance, cheers~

  • Kathleen and K.C. are great people and were amazing hosts - they not only accommodated us, but they also took time out of their day to give us advice about our stay, show us maps of the area, and chat about all things in between. They also left out a delicious breakfast complete with K.C.'s wonderful homemade bread. It was truly a treat to stay with them.

  • Kathleen and KC are a nice people. We had a wonderful stay at their place in Meiringen. Their place is close to the train station and right opposite to the Sherlock Museum. We enjoyed the bread prepared by KC and it was the best tasting bread we had during our stay in Switzerland. Phoebe is a nice dog and was well-behaved during our stay there. I can summarize that we had pleasant stay in Meiringen and a wonderful trip in Switzerland.

KATHLEEN and KC: We are both from the United States and have lived in Switzerland for over 20 years now. We have been very happily married for 31 years and have two grown sons and a 5-year-old dog named Phoebe. We both love hiking, snowshoeing and skiing, chocolate and ice cream. If we can have all 5 in one day, we celebrate with an extra scoop. For 18 years we worked as teachers, dorm heads and also co-directors of a wonderful boarding school here in the Swiss Alps. We are now both parent and teacher educators of the Positive Discipline approach, giving talks, workshops and classes in Switzerland and the U.S. We are long-time ovo-lacto vegetarians and students of Thich Nhat Hanh. KATHLEEN: I am a social worker and currently work as a parent educator and coach in private practice. I worked for 9 years in the US as a psychotherapist and then 18 years in Switzerland in a unique international boarding school in many different roles. In addition to what's listed above, I love coffee, yoga, being with family and friends, reading, NYT crossword puzzles, films (not action or horror). I am a huge fan of Michelle and Barack Obama. KC: I love back-country skiing, swimming in alpine lakes and rivers, reading stories aloud, playing games like chess, bridge, sudoku and free cell, frisbee with our dog, tennis, and traveling.
