About This Listing
From the moment you walk through the gate a tranquil garden awaits you with a deck for lounging and a private hot tub. Our lovely bungalow is located in trendy Temescal with great restaurants and a short walk to the train station to hop into SF.
From the moment you walk through the front gate you are in another world...a surprisingly lush and tranquil garden awaits you with a deck for lounging. Venture further along the flagstone path and you come upon a private outdoor hot tub nestled in a deck right outside the french doors leading into the bedroom.
The 1915 Craftsman era cottage is a cozy and functional nest, with one bedroom containing an extra long full-size bed with a firm organic latex mattress (great for people with back issues), an adjoining bathroom with a claw foot tub, and french doors leading out to the hot tub. The kitchen - designed with the cook in mind - has all new appliances and openly flows to the dining room, where you can have dinner in front of the fireplace -- for those chilly winter evenings.
Our lovely bungalow is located in trendy Temescal, a neighborhood within a short walk of several restaurants opened by proteges of Alice Waters (Bakesale Bettys, Pizzaiolo to name a few), and only a few blocks from Temescal Alley, which has a coffee kiosk, art galleries, and a retro barbershop among its offerings. Walk a bit further and you will be in the lively shopping and restaurant streets of Rockridge or Piedmont Avenue, and a short cab ride takes you to Lake Merritt, Uptown or Old Oakland.
We are within a 10-15 minute walk of two train stations (Rockridge and MacArthur) where you can easily hop a train into central San Francisco. If you have a car, there is easy street parking right in front of our house.
Oakland has great weather year-round (it is one of the most temperate climates in the world) and it is a central, convenient base for exploring San Francisco, the Bay Area and Northern California. Spend the day exploring, yet come back to a peaceful setting that makes you truly feel like you are on vacation.
Up to two adults can fit comfortably in our house. It is not suitable for children, we do not have sleeping pads for additional people, and the couch is not suitable for sleeping.
Note: We prefer a minimum stay of 3 nights; however, a two-night stay might be possible, depending on the day of the week, so please ask me if you are interested in booking a two-night stay.
Guests have full and exclusive use of the house and includes access to the hot tub, garden and kitchen.
Interaction with Guests
Our interaction is almost exclusively by email and/or telephone. Unfortunately we are rarely able to meet guests in person.

Tamara and her husband Ramon were incredible hosts and their home was spectacular! It was like a paradise, in the middle of Oakland. The garden around the house is even more beautiful than their pictures can show and we spent much of our time just sitting outside, enjoying the beautiful calm. The home itself is much more spacious than the pictures may have indicated and is decorated beautifully, with a nice mix of modern and rustic flair. We loved the super well equipped Kitchen, which makes it fun cooking:)
I'll definitely be looking for another excuse to stay with them again in the future!
The communication prior to and during my stay was helpful and fantastic! Everything was positively restful, comfortable and convenient, which was what I was looking for as I was on a business trip. It became a lovely retreat for me at the end of the day, and lots of things to walk and visit in the evenings. Highly recommend! Thanks Tamara!
True hospitality. Thoughtfulness and attention to all the details that make you feel comfortable, welcome and well taken care of. Our host, Tamara, was very welcoming and responsive. The description of the cottage matched perfectly and exceeded our expectations. The privacy, quietude, and comfort were amazing. This secret garden Cottage exceeded my expectations (of which were rather positive in the first place) .. from viewing pictures and reading reviews from prior guests.
What made it work for me was the LOCATION, comfort and cleanliness of the accommodations itself and the many amenities provided. I recommend it highly and, if permitted, hope to rent it on my next visit. Would stay again in a heartbeat.
Tamara is simply amazing. She has a wonderfully comfortable, intimate house. Secret garden isn't a joke; it's the real deal!
Walking to Blue Bottle for our morning coffee was wonderful. Walking to BART each day felt like the start of a new adventure. We never once felt unsafe.
Having the entire house to ourselves, the secret garden and fantastic hottub - what a great place!
We had a wonderful stay at Tamara's sweet cottage. The home was not only clean and well cared for, but absolutely charming and lovely. The garden was an oasis in the middle of Oakland and the neighborhood felt safe and family friendly. Tamara was easy to contact and super prompt about returning emails. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
About the Host, Tamara
I have lived in the SF Bay Area since 1990 and having grown up in Northern California and Nevada, I have a deep knowledge of the region and will be happy to make suggestions for places to go that suit your particular interests. I also love to cook and eat out and can give you lots of suggestions for restaurants and food and wine-related excursions. My husband Ramon is a native of the Netherlands who immigrated to the U.S. in 2004 and in addition to English he of course speaks fluent Dutch as well as workable German. We have an 11 year old Schnauzer, Otto Von Bacon...
