Enjoy the sights and sounds of nature from a rustic farmhouse nestled in the desert of Southern California.

Drive two hours east of Los Angeles, past the Big Bear mountains, until the suburbs thin out to wide-open land on the fringes of the Mojave Desert. Welcome to Lucerne Valley, where homesteads, rock formations, and dry lakes make for strikingly beautiful scenery.

Join us in feeding the animals and goat milking or just enjoy as your kids play and get a taste of the farmlife.

The space
Horses and peacocks and sheep, oh my! Barnyard buddies and city slickers alike will want to flock to the Flip Flop Ranch, a working 40-acre farm filled with furry friends in the heart of Lucerne Valley. Stay in our bright and airy farmhouse and experience country life at its best—more than your average farm, the Flip Flop is home to several endangered breeds of livestock that we help to conserve. Every stay at the ranch helps to keep these breeds alive for future generations!

Get a peek into a rural lifestyle that disappeared for many when the family farm was sold, often generations ago. There is a pace to life on the farm that starts with the early morning wake-up call by the rooster, the sound of the tractor throughout the day and ending with a quiet sunset and the total darkness of a desert night, except for a fantastic view of the stars.

The Flip Flop Ranch farmstay has sheep and lambs, pigs and piglets, cows, chickens, bunches of barn cats (with plenty of kittens), geese, ducks, turkeys, goats, horses and more.

Host a family get together, a business retreat or a hangout with friends!

Where you’ll be

Lucerne Valley, California, United States

The home is located on a working farm surrounded by miles of beautiful desert with hardly any neighbors. Plenty of space to go hiking. Located five miles down the mountain (about 30 min drive) from Big Bear lake and the ski areas.

We are 45 minutes from Joshua Tree National Park and less than an hour from Calico Ghost Town. Wolf Mountain Sanctuary is about ten minutes away and The Sound Bath and Pioneer Town are about a half hour.

We're also only 22 miles (about a half hour) from Means Lake in Johnson Valley where King of the Hammers takes place. Johnson Valley also offers fantastic off highway vehicle areas for dirt biking or rock crawling all year long.

I'm Serina and I’ll be showing you around my family’s farm. We raise rare heritage breeds of pigs, chickens, cows, goats, geese and a bunch of beautiful but slightly annoying peacocks. We started farming so that we could become healthier and more self sufficient. When we started 15 years ago, we were absolute beginners and didn’t have a clue what we were doing. There’s always more to learn but now we know enough that we help other people to get started on their own little homestead! I’m excited to teach you about goats and how to milk whether it’s just for the fun of the experience or because you’re serious on wanting to pursue this kind of life. Either way, you’ll leave here with new friends and knowledge and be more connected to nature and farming!

During your stay

Feel free to roll up your sleeves and get grit under your nails alongside a family of good-natured farmers, learning as you go. Guests can pitch in around the property helping to feed the livestock, collecting chicken eggs, and milking the goats. You can bring apples or carrots to share with the horses, pet a sheep, or take a gander at the gaggle of endangered Sebastopol geese to learn more about the farm's conservation efforts.

Or, just kick back and enjoy the simple, unhurried atmosphere; you can spend time holding baby goats, napping in the afternoon, or hiking in the desert. At the end of the day, a sky full of stars and roasted marshmallows around the fire will be your sweet rewards.

Some guests come just to relax or go skiing in big bear and others come for the farm. For the last group, we have extra activities to give you a better farm experience!

Book one of our extra activities:

-Farm tour: $5 per person
-Join in animal feeding and goat milking: $200 for up to 15 people*
-Mozzarella cheesemaking class: $65 per person
-Painting class: $25 per person
-Jewelry making class: $25 per person
-Learn to card and spin wool: $25 per person

*Generally we feed the morning after you check in and then milk the goats that evening. If you would like to schedule it differently then please contact us. You don’t need to book a farm tour if you do the animal feeding.

**Please let us know as soon in advance as you can if you want to do the activities. We’re just a tiny family farm so we can’t always schedule things especially last minute. Also unless the activities are paid for, they aren’t guaranteed. Some classes are led by people who aren’t farm employees so they have to know for sure in advance. Thanks!
