Very peaceful and less than 10 minutes from the little town of Atenas.

The Space

We live on a well traveled gravel road 150 meters from the paved road and less than a 1/4 mile to the local bus to Atenas (10 minutes away) where you can make connections to other routes. The views in the area are pastoral and wooded with a few houses in sight from the deck. The area is pretty quiet and muy tranquillo.

This is a private room with an adjacent private bath. The room has two large screened windows a separate entrance opening to large deck overlooking coffee with mature trees with a distant view of San Jose. We love to sit out on the porch and watch birds and butterflies. We have several outside spaces with exotic plants and nice views. The house is 5-6 years old with high peaked rustic teak wood ceilings and tile floors. We have free WIFI. The temperature here is perfect and your room has a ceiling fan which you probably will not need.

We are sort of vegetarians who occasionally eat fish and our guests are welcome to use the grill for whatever they like to cook.

Atenas is centrally located for travelers who want to see different parts of Costa Rica.

Coffee, toast and fresh local fruit are served for breakfast.

We will consider single nights stays to accomodate your travels needs.

Check In
  • Spectacular natural views. The small quiet town nearby, Atenas was a friendly place. Our hosts kind and attentive . Contemplative place to relax and unwind. Best restaurant in Atenas was La carreta.

  • Chez Wideman was our first stop on our month of travels in Costa Rica. The choice was a happy accident - it was close by the airport (40 minutes by auto) but we'd have happily spent the rest of the month with Robert and Bea in the hills above Atenas.

We had the run of a long veranda overlooking a valley filled with birdlife; iguanas scuttling along the tin roof overhead; quiet country roads to climb and descend for a daily constitutional. Our hosts lead a quiet life, busy themselves with their projects (blacksmithing, jewellery-making), and they check in unobtrusively to see if you need something. Atenas has a busy greenmarket and we ate well of fresh local produce and fruit.

All in all a healthy life, a lovely spot, kind and attentive hosts; highly recommended.

  • This was a lovely place to stay. It was a bit hard to find. Make sure you get directions from calle San Isidrio to his house and don't forget his phone number in case you get lost. The view was great and they were wonderful people.

  • What a terrific stay in a beautiful location, very comfortable and well appointed home and with such interesting and very nice hosts. If you have the opportunity to stay with Robert and Beatrice, do. They live just a few minutes up the hill from Atenas (best to have a car) with great views and a nicely landscaped yard. The room is quite private and in the morning I was served coffee grown from the coop where their production goes. Just great all around.

  • Our stay was really great! Robert and his wife were wonderful hosts. Very hospitable and welcoming. Each morning we enjoyed a delicious breakfast with fresh local fruit, toast, and coffee from their property. They helped us with places we wanted go to and navigate the unmarked roads of Costa Rica. The room and bathroom were clean and comfortable and the back porch views were gorgeous, full of bird life, volcano, lush plant life, and iguanas. We highly recommend this place!

we like to experience different cultures, our style of traveling is mostly mixing and getting to know the locals.staying at bed and breakfast, hotel or camping at time. favorite destinations are france and costa rica, we enjoy growing tropical plants, watching birds and butterflies and eating local food such as fresh food and vegetables. we eat fish but not meat. but guest are welcome to use the grill and cook anything you like, we will make sure that the guest stay will be a very posistive experience as we know both roles. we are learning spanish and able to converse enough to get what we need, we also speak french.
