The Space

Beautiful log cabin on private sunset facing shoreline filled with classic details and many luxuries that will make your stay more than memorable. Perfect for a quick getaway the cabin is located approximately 20 minutes west of Interstate 35 and is just two hours north of the Twin Cities, and 1/2 hour from Duluth.

The cabin has one bedroom + a loft. It can sleep up to six people (three queen sized beds) in two sleeping areas: two beds in an open loft (accessible by a ladder) and one in the bedroom. There are three levels to the cabin. The loft (ladder access), a window filled main floor with kitchen/living space and a stairway leading to a walk out lower level with window/doors on three sides facing the lake.

While the cabin can accommodate six people it is BEST FOR FOUR OR LESS guests. Although they have enjoyed their stays, a few guests over the years have found the spaces a bit to cozy--especially in winter for those who don't plan to spend time outside.

Lakeshore western views from over 1000 sq. feet of wraparound decks with two tables, umbrellas and chairs. There is also a sauna in separate building, wood stove, A/C, in floor radiant heat, and a kitchen filled with high end appliances. Near three state parks: Moose Lake, Jay Cook and Savanna Portage and less than five minutes from Fond du lac State forest with thousands of acres with endless ski, snowmobile, and hiking trails. Great fishing lake–nearly 300 acres and is connected to other local lakes, rivers, wetlands. 48 notice needed prior to rental. Sadly, no pets allowed due to allergies. Other nearby attractions include: golf, Blackbear casino, history centers, whitewater rafting, and the amenities found in Duluth. The home is not suitable for gatherings or parties with more than six guests. Wi-fi, netflix, and hulu service is available. Available dates are detailed on the airbnb calendar. Note: It's typically not possible to accommodate check-in's on the same day as another party checks out. Sufficient time is needed to adequately clean and prepare the home for your arrival.

THINGS TO DO ….

Jay Cooke State Park: This park is a must! Park trails link up to the Willard Munger State Trail at the north edge of the park; perfect for backpackers, bikers (both mountain and tour), hikers, horseback riders, and skiers. Check out the wildflowers in the spring, and the vivid colors in the fall. Walk on the swinging suspension bridge high above the raging St. Louis River. Visit the historic cemetery and the gorge at Thomson Dam.

Fond Du Lac State Forest: is roughly 3 miles north of the cabin. There are countless miles trails for winter and summer use. Maps available online. There is also a fire tower that is partially climbable.

See Duluth: Visit Canal Park by the city on the lake. My particular favorite places include canal park (I35 to Lake Avenue. Right into Canal Park Area). Eat at Lake Avenue Cafe, drink coffee and hear local music at the Amazing Grace Cafe, visit the Lake Superior Maritime museum, shop for antiques at Father Time Antique store, walk across the aerial lift bridge and out on the jetty to the lighthouses. End your day with a walk on the beach on Minnesota point (across the aerial lift bridge to beach) on Minnesota's youngest geological feature... the long spit of land.

Raft the St. Louis Rivers: (website hidden).

Gamble the Night Away! - Blackbear Casino (and great buffets!) is minutes away in Cloquet.

Moose Lake State Park Geology Interpretative Center -- Rock hunters and agate collectors traveling around Lake Superior should consider taking a slight side trip (on Interstate 35) about 36 miles south of Duluth, MN to see the very impressive Lake Superior Agate collection and rock displays at the interpretive center located with the Moose Lake Park Visitor Center. If you have a annual state park pass or a pass for the day from visiting another Minnesota state park, admission to the Geological Center is free; otherwise there is a modest admission charge (in my opinion worth the fee if you are interested in agates).

Moose Lake Fire Museum and Historical Society – Moose Lake Housed in the former Soo Line Depot, the Moose Lake Depot contains exhibits about the history of the area railroads and tells the story of the huge 1918 fire. The fire burned 250,000 acres, took more than 450 lives and devastated the Moose Lake-Kettle River area.

Golf Minnesota National (McGregor) Welcome to the magnificent Joel Goldstrand-designed Minnesota National Golf Course. Developed within the dense covering of towering red and white pines and abundant wildlife, nothing but nature will greet you here. The 7,200-yard, bent grass 18-hole championship course has five tee boxes for all skill levels. There's also a blue grass 9-hole executive course featuring junior tees for families and those who like a more leisurely, less challenging round of golf. (phone number hidden)th St. McGregor MN 55760

Bike / Ski / Snow mobile the Trails… the Soo, Willard Munger, and many other trails are in the area… too many to mention. Claiming the title of "Agate Capital of the World," Moose Lake is a great place to start a ride. It is located at the halfway point on the Willard Munger Trail system, and the route follows an area covered by glacial till and outwash left from the last ice age.

  • We had an excellent several days at the cabin. It's well appointed with attention paid to every detail. It's a comfortable space inside and out with a great kitchen, loft (the beds up there were terrific), bedroom, deck, dock, fire pit, etc. The property feels quite private and the cabin sits nicely on the lake. And to top it all off, the fishing was good as well. Highly recommend.

  • Cabin was gorgeous and just as described. We were very comfortable and had no issues whatsoever. The instructions were clear and very helpful, would stay there again in a heartbeat.

  • As a family of 3 adults and 2 kids we had a great stay at Matt's cabin. The cabin is pretty secluded as one probably expects in a Northwoods cabin. The lake and fishing is right in front of the cabin and a great state park is nearby. The kids loved the fact that they were able to watch Netflix. Beautiful cabin with nicer appliances than we have at home. Matt was super responsive and answered all questions very quickly.

  • An amazing cabin! The weather didn't work out so great for our stay but we enjoyed it regardless. The cabin was clean and beautiful. During the rain we watched some Netflix and enjoyed the Sauna. Matt was great at communicating everything we needed. Loved the experience.

  • Matt was efficient with responding to my questions, and very organized. The cabin was exactly what we expected, very beautiful, exactly as (website hidden) family and I had a very enjoyable relaxing time. We didn't see any neighbors. The sauna was very hot and refreshing. We may have swam if there wasn't so much seaweed, but very beautiful overall.

    Response from Matt:

So glad you and your sisters had a good weekend at the cabin Kathleen. Thanks for the kind words about the space. We love the sauna too. Thanks too for your note about swimming. We love using the lake for swimming, boating and fishing and do manually remove an area 10 feet out from the south and west sides of the dock just enough to expose the sand bottom but not enough to diminish habitat for the bass and sunfish... with the ice only out a few weeks ago we hadn't got to that project yet... but will... thanks for the reminder. Come back anytime. Matt -

  • We had a fantastic weekend at Matt's place. It was slightly smaller than I had envisioned from the pictures, but it was VERY well done and I could definitely detect the high quality of craftsmanship. It was still more than enough room for my girlfriend and I. It will sleep 6 comfortably (super comfortable beds), but if you think you will be spending most of your days in the cabin, I would recommend 4 tops. I really enjoyed how it felt rustic while still having high quality amenities.

Matt provides a very thorough house manual to all features of the house, as well as suggestions for things to do in the area. He is very responsive to any and all questions. I would definitely go back!

  • This is a beautiful cabin, and looked exactly as it did in the photos. The view was beautiful and we enjoyed toasting marshmallows over the fire by the water. The place was very clean, and I especially loved cooking with his amazing stove! I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to get away from it all- you obviously take great pride in your place Matt! Thanks for everything :)

  • Matt was a great host, and my family and I loved staying at his cabin. Matt was extremely responsive and went out of his way to make sure we had a great time and had everything we needed for our weekend. The cabin was cozy and charming. We would definitely stay here again!

  • We had a great winter weekend getaway here, and it was a very pleasant, hiccup-free experience. The cabin is very pleasant and tastefully designed. The kitchen was a high point - great for cooking. Sauna was also great. Easy to drive over to Fond du Lac State Forest and cross-country ski.

  • Matt's place is great and Matt himself was phenomenal to work with. Matt was very communicative, provided great recommendations, was organized, and is clearly concerned about his guests having a good time.

The cabin was very nice as well and was perfect for our winter weekend away from Minneapolis. It was cozy, spacious, and relaxing. Highly recommend.

    Thanks Matt!
