We *loved* this place. What a beautiful family and home. We could feel the warmth and love from the first second we arrived. Pedro picked us up from the bus station when we arrived, which was very nice, though Lorena gave us great directions to the house. The bus to Cuenca is convenient (and insane!) from their house. It is a bit of a hike up their driveway, but we really enjoyed it.
Zilpa, Santiago and Pedro made us feel incredibly welcome. Our Spanish is...terrible. But Pedro's English is fantastic, and we learned a lot of Spanish, as Zilpa and Santiago made huge efforts to communicate with us, tell us about their recent trip to the coast, and explain the many uses of sugar cane. Aaron really enjoyed his early morning drink of aguardiente :)
The room and the house are just fantastic works of art.
We loved our stay and would love to come back.
My family was greeted at the bus station by family members and taken out for dinner, which was very convenient. Zilpa, Santiago, and Pedro were very welcoming and helpful during our stay. They often ate breakfast with us (if we got up early enough).
As stated, the house is gorgeous, clean, and nicely decorated. It is a bit of a hike up the driveway to the house, especially after a long day. The house is within a 20 or 30-minute walk of several different hot springs and a few restaurants and stores. There is also a nice hike up the hill on the property.
The room itself is bright, with a very large window. There is also many drawers for storing personal items, making it very convenient. The internet signal was strong and reliable, able to support video chat programs.
Santiago and Zilpa were wonderful hosts. They were gracious and very helpful at all times. They even came into Cuenca to pick us up. In addition the house is one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed in. Every piece, including the furniture, were handmade by Santiago. I highly recommend this as a place to stay, especially if you're trying to get away from the city for a while.
Zilpa, Santiago, Pedro and the entire family were just fabulous hosts. They are very welcoming and helpful with any questions and advice. I only stayed 3 days and regretted I didn’t have more time. During my time, they made me feel part of their family.
The house has a lot of character, is very clean, the rooms are spacious. It is located at the outskirts of Cuenca, in Baños, and therefore does not have the air pollution you might find on some days in Cuenca. It is set back from the main road and is slightly up a steep hill. It has an amazing view. You can walk up (through an Eucalyptus grove) to the top of the hill or marvel at the numerous plants and flowers in Zilpa’s garden. Zilpa prepared a healthy breakfast every morning with home-made and organic food, some taken directly from her garden. She also has detailed knowledge of natural remedies and helped me overcome a cold I brought along from my previous travel.
I made my daily trip into downtown Cuenca by bus (25cts), and back to the house by taxicab ($4-5). Some cabdrivers from Cuenca were not very familiar with Baños and had difficulty finding the location. Just tell them the name of the school at the opposite side at the main road and they will find it.
I enjoyed my stay very much. Highly recommended! (5 stars)
I received a very warm welcome at the airport by Lorena when arrived who took me to their home in Banos. Both Santiago and Zilpa are wonderful hosts, made me feel part of the family right away. Their home is very beautiful. But there is a pretty steep hill to walk up to their home which might be difficult if you're elderly or not in shape. However, Santiago was starting to fix it when I was leaving so that taxis will be able to drop you off to the door instead of having to walk it. Banos is a very small town, it's highlight are the thermal spas.
