The Space

The 2 rooms being offered are located in the basement with a separate entrance and key. One of the rooms is a bedroom and the other is a living area that features a microwave oven and a mini refrigerator with a table and chairs. The living area also has an additional bed in it. The bedroom is air conditioned and is located by the washer and dryer, with its own bathroom just 6 feet away. We provide towels, sheets, pillows, Roku 3 (streaming TV) that's attached to a 23 inch monitor and WiFi. There is a shower in the bathroom on the first floor adjacent to the kitchen. The household is made up of a family of 3.

Getting around

The NJ Transit #25 and #70 buses (a 7 minute walk from the house) travel along Springfield Avenue to Newark Penn Station where you can get a train to New York. The #94 bus stop is also very close and travels to a major shopping center on Rt 22. This area is at the center of several major roads: Rt 78, the Garden State Parkway, the NJ Turnpike, Rt 22. This assures you of fast, convenient transportation by whatever means you may choose. There are many car rental agencies in the area. There is a Quick Chek (a convenience store) on the corner.

Other Things to Note

If you have transportation (via taxi, car or bicycle) to alternate train stations (the Maplewood Train Station on the Gladstone Line that's about a mile away or the Union Train Station on the Raritan Valley Line that's about 2 miles away), you can cut your transportation times to NYC (mid town) to less than 1 hour.

  • I had a great experience at Patch's place. It was stormy the day I arrived and I came back late on the following day. But they waited for me and showed me around the property nicely. The place is very roomy and clean and the coach bed was comfortable. Access to the room was easy and the parking area was very well secured. On top of everything was their great hospitality and friendliness. If you drove to NYC and try to look for some good place to stay like me, their place would definitely be your top choice!

  • The rooms are actually the run of the entire basement. The bedroom had powerful wifi, and a pullout bed that was the equivalent of a queen sized. The rooms are fully private, with a separate entrance. I never had trouble getting parking within one house distance of the location.

  • My husband and I stayed there for one night as we traveled through the state. Quiet, clean place. Warm and welcoming hosts, decent place for the price.

  • I stayed here with my partner during out eventual move out to NYC. We wanted some place that was more suburban and not too overwhelming to start, but had reasonable transit access to the city. This place really fit the bill. The transit to the city itself can be far (you can map it online to check) but if you're not hitting the city constantly and plan it well in full day trip increments, you can make it work, especially if it's a move where you need a solid place to anchor yourself for a while as there's plenty of room for your stuff. Patch and his family were awesome. We rarely saw them and were friendly and helpful, checking on us occasionally via text mostly. The internet was solid 98% of the time and the speed was very good. There is plenty of space for two people to share, it feels private and comfy. There's a QuickCheq, liquor store, Chinese takeout and restaurant/bar nearby. About a 5-10 minute walk you'll find the usual Subway/McDonalds/Burger King and many other local restaurants and shops, grocery, etc. If you're up for a 30-40 minute walk, you can reach Target, Whole Foods, Best Buy going West. For about the same time you can go North to the West Orange area. It's a cute little town right on the train route with lots of beautiful buildings, a performing arts center and a nice movie theatre. We enjoyed walking that way to see the beautiful houses and woodsy environs. It's very close to the Reservation there where you can go for a fun walk / hike, see the woods, lakes and waterfalls. There's even a zoo and other outdoor amenities there though we never made it farther than the Southern part of the reservation as it was winter. Of course, having a car is even better, but then you'll be missing out on the long walks around the vicinity. Anyway, Patch's dad picked us up at the airport in Newark and dropped us off at our destination as well...really stellar and not expected at all. Had no problems with communication. He even asked us if there was anything that could be improved about the space/experience and that left a really good impression on us. If we find ourselves in the area again we'll definitely make it back. If you're okay with the transit distance to NYC and plan it well, I have no doubt that you'll enjoy your stay here. It feels like home!

  • Really enjoyed the stay, nice location, we would happily stay again

  • I had a really nice stay at Patch's. I was in the room for about a week after just moving to New Jersey. There was plenty of space to hold my things and it was nice and private, with it's own entrance and basic bathroom (no shower downstairs). There was also a microwave and a mini fridge, which was convenient. The room was surprisingly warm for a basement on winter nights, perhaps because there was some warmth coming off the water heater down there. The bed was fine, though not too comfortable. If you prefer a firmer-feeling mattress, you'll be fine (it is a fold out couch/sofa-bed)

I only saw Patch or his family a handful of times in my eight days there, but every time they were very friendly and welcoming. The location was also great - easy to get on the freeway, and a few convenience stores nearby as well as a Target just down the road.
