Our house gets buckets of sunlight, is extremely spacious, and is blocks from the beach, Boardwalk, and downtown. It is up on Beach Hill, an island of relative tranquility between the beach attractions and downtown. Easy walking to everywhere.
Nichole and I are high school teachers who have been enjoying living in and renovating this 1928 Dutch Colonial Revival home on Beach Hill. One reason we bought it was because we love to be able to walk everywhere, and the location is perfect for that. It is located 2 blocks from the Main Beach and Boardwalk of Santa Cruz, and Cowell's Beach, the best beginner surf spot in California. There is a wetsuit and surfboard rental store directly across from Cowell's Beach. The house is also 3 blocks from downtown Santa Cruz.
The house looks like a large green barn from the outside. We've slowly been bringing the main house back to its original single-family home state (though there is a separate rental on the basement floor with a private entrance). We've removed the carpet from most of the house and found beautiful original hardwood floors.
The front lawn has three chairs for reading and gets nice morning and mid-afternoon sunlight. In the back of the house, we've recently put in a hot tub under the buckeye tree.
The main floor consists of a large living room with couch, piano, wood stove and large flat-screen TV (we don't have cable but use Netflix, Hulu and DVDs). The living room wraps around into the kitchen and half-bath. Off the kitchen, there is a good sized teenager's bedroom with an extended full bed and its own bathroom. Off the other side of the living room is the large deck with barbecue. The deck looks over the city and across to the university, and is a great place to barbecue or have an afternoon cocktail.
Upstairs there is an extremely large master bedroom (it used to be a studio apartment) with its own bathroom and king bed. On the other side upstairs are the two rooms of what used to be a one-bedroom apartment... we haven't taken the kitchen out of that one yet. We use one of those rooms as a guest room (it also has its own bathroom) and this room has a queen bed. The other room is used as an office though it doubles as another spare bedroom with the air bed or the two sleeping mats.
Feel free to use the wireless and/or house computer. There is also a bike, boogie boards, and a foam surf board to use in the garage!
Guests have access to the full house, front yard, and back hot tub. We do ask that guests only use the basement for laundry, as it is our storage area and shared with our tenant in the downstairs basement apartment. The garage and the attic are locked during rentals.
We rent the house while we are out of town on vacations, so are not available to interact with guests during their stay. Nikki's father who lives in the area assumes the "house manager" role if anything comes up.
Kids love this house because we are so close to the Main Beach, and Boardwalk with rides, games, arcade, mini-golf and bowling. In the summer, they offer free concerts on the beach. We are blocks away from a stroll down West Cliff Drive, which has amazing views of the ocean and surfers.
Next to Main Beach is Cowell's Beach, one of the best beginner surf spots in California.
Walking a few blocks in the other direction brings you to downtown Santa Cruz. Somehow this Beach Hill neighborhood stays an island of relative quiet and tranquility in the middle of all the tourist attractions.

Great location and homey style at Philip and Nicole's! Love the old house!
Philip and Nichole are a very friendly and warm couple, with a beautiful home in a great location. They went out of their way to ensure we felt comfortable and welcome, even before our actual trip. We stayed at the house with another family, and there was plenty of space for all of us. The kids loved the turtles, and I enjoyed giving them fresh lettuce from the garden every day! They even left some breakfast items in the fridge for us with a note for us. This was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend staying at this home if you plan a trip to Santa Cruz!
Great location for two families with middle school/high school age kids. Easy walking to beach, boardwalk and shops/restaurants on Pacific Ave.
House was spacious, comfortable and had character with a nice deck for late afternoon relaxing and BBQing.
Hope this house is available again next time we want to spend time in Santa Cruz!
The house was spacious and perfect, the location is ideal. We went with out of town family, and spent our days at the beach and the boardwalk, we walked to downtown and Phillip and Nicole provided us with lost of helpful information, particularly regarding things to do with kids. I imagine we will stay there again!
We stayed at this large and airy home near the beach, close to downtown with our extended family over 4th of July (3 nights). It was a good value and we appreciated our hosts generosity and hospitality. We were able to include our adult children, their spouses/significant others and friends and there was no extra charge for that. We did clean up after ourselves, in spite of not being able to find a broom, we even did laundry and ate al fresco, since they have a good sized deck. All in all, a fine home, the only drawback was loud neighbors after 1:00 am.
We couldn't have had a better experience. The house is beautiful, the yard well-kept, and the area perfect. Two blocks from the beach and a close walk to downtown - the perfect excuse to leave the car behind and enjoy the area. The house itself is perfect for multiple families or couples due to the fact that each bedroom (3) has its own bath. The boogie boards were a huge hit with the kids, as well as the resident turtles. :) There's also cable TV and free WiFi for those who need to check into work or enjoy some downtime!
We will definitely look into staying here again. Thanks, Philip and Nicole, for a wonderful mini-vacation!
I can't say enough about this house and my experience with Philip. I contacted him via email before reserving the house and everything fell into place. The house itself is spacious, bright, & beautiful. It's located very close to the beach & boardwalk area, with a large back deck.
I would definitely recommend this home for anyone looking in the Santa Cruz area. 5 stars.
