Our house gets buckets of sunlight, is extremely spacious, and is blocks from the beach, Boardwalk, and downtown. It is up on Beach Hill, an island of relative tranquility between the beach attractions and downtown. Easy walking to everywhere.
Nichole and I are high school teachers who have been enjoying living in and gradually renovating this 1928 Dutch Colonial Revival home on Beach Hill for the past five years. One reason we bought it was because we love to be able to walk everywhere, and the location is perfect for that. It is located 2 blocks from the Main Beach and Boardwalk of Santa Cruz, and Cowell's Beach, the best beginner surf spot in California. The house is also 3 blocks from downtown Santa Cruz.
We do have neighbors with infant children who we are very close to and want to keep on good terms with, so it is not a good rental for a New Year's Eve or other party situation, but it is a wonderful house for a family vacation.
The house looks like a large green barn from the outside. We've slowly been bringing the main house back to its original single-family home state (though there is a separate rental on the basement floor with a private entrance). We've removed the carpet from most of the house and found beautiful original hardwood floors.
We've recently put in a hot tub under the buckeye tree in the back of the house. The front lawn has three chairs for reading and gets nice morning and mid-afternoon sunlight.
The main floor consists of a large living room with couch, piano, wood stove and large flat-screen TV (we don't have cable but use Netflix, Hulu and DVDs). The living room wraps around into the kitchen and half-bath. Off the kitchen, there is a good sized teenager's bedroom with two side-by-side twin beds and its own bathroom. Off the other side of the living room is the large deck with barbecue. The deck looks over the city and across to the university, and is a great place to barbecue or have an afternoon cocktail.
Upstairs there is an extremely large master bedroom (it used to be a studio apartment) with its own bathroom and king bed. On the other side upstairs are the two rooms of what used to be a one-bedroom apartment... we haven't taken the kitchen out of that one yet. We use one of those rooms as a guest room (it also has its own bathroom) and this room has a queen bed. The other room is used as an office though it doubles as another spare bedroom with a fold-out couch. This couch extends into a good sized bed.
Feel free to use the wireless and/or house computer. There is also a bike, boogie boards, and a foam surf board to use in the garage!
Guests have access to the full house, front yard, and back hot tub. We do ask that guests only use the basement for laundry, as it is our storage area and shared with our tenant in the downstairs basement apartment. The garage and the attic are locked during rentals.
Interaction with Guests
We rent the house while we are out of town on vacations, so are usually not available to interact with guests during their stay. Nikki's father who lives in the area assumes the "house manager" role if anything comes up.
Kids love this house because we are so close to the Main Beach, and Boardwalk with rides, games, arcade, mini-golf and bowling. In the summer, they offer free concerts on the beach. We are blocks away from a stroll down West Cliff Drive, which has amazing views of the ocean and surfers.
Next to Main Beach is Cowell's Beach, one of the best beginner surf spots in California.
Walking a few blocks in the other direction brings you to downtown Santa Cruz. Somehow this Beach Hill neighborhood stays an island of relative quiet and tranquility in the middle of all the tourist attractions.
There is parking in the driveway and on the street. In the summertime when street parking is permit only, we provide guest permits.
Our tenant and friend downstairs, Jake, has his own pathway and entrance to his apartment on the basement floor. Please do be considerate of him in terms of loud noise late at night. Also, please do not use the pathway on the left side of the house or the backyard patio space below on the left side of the house as those areas belong to our tenant.
Please, no smoking inside the house, and no pets.
Please bring in the mail (from the top mailbox only) each day, and the newspaper from the small gate by the front lawn.
Please do not allow children in the basement. We use it for storage along with Jake, and only open it up so that the washing machine and dryer can be used.
Garbage night is SUNDAY night, if you are staying on s Sunday night please do bring the cans to the front curb and back again the next day. They come by early in the morning on Monday, about 5:30am.
We also have a vegetable garden. If you could take a couple minutes to water it with the hose that would be so helpful! And feel free to harvest whatever looks tasty.
Lovely little house, suited our group great and felt like home. It's in a great location near the Boardwalk / West Cliff / Downtown.
this house is just as described and the pictures are accurate. fits well in neighborhood and being so close to the beach and boardwalk areas as well as some of the downtown area was a bonus. the house was very open and had a lot of personality. outdoor spaces were used quite a bit and it was a very comfortable home for our large group. really nice to have 3 full bathrooms too! host left accurate instructions for appliances and suggestions for places to visit and restaurants near by. a great experience.
This is a great house! It is light and airy with plenty of room to spread out. It is an easy down hill walk just a few blocks to the beach, boardwalk, arcade, etc. and an easy walk to town, restaraunts, etc. the house was comfortable and well stocked. It was beautiful and spacious and well equipped. Philip and Nichole could not have been more gracious hosts and made us feel completely welcome though they were not there. We definitely hope to return!
Philip was a wonderful host, he made sure we were aware of everything the house provided and also what to do when cleaning/locking up. The house itself is bright, roomy, and has unique character. The balcony was a wonderful place to grill, relax, and have a view that overlooks Santa Cruz downtown. Everything you need on a relaxing getaway vacation was just a couple blocks from the house --Downtown, beach boardwalk, restaurants, and day spas. Jake, the tenant downstairs, is also a friendly guy, we invited him up for food and a couple beers. I would definitely book this place again when I come back to Santa Cruz!
Philip and Nichole are a very friendly and warm couple, with a beautiful home in a great location. They went out of their way to ensure we felt comfortable and welcome, even before our actual trip. We stayed at the house with another family, and there was plenty of space for all of us. The kids loved the turtles, and I enjoyed giving them fresh lettuce from the garden every day! They even left some breakfast items in the fridge for us with a note for us. This was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend staying at this home if you plan a trip to Santa Cruz!
Nichole and I are high school teachers of French and Science. I enjoy playing old time and bluegrass music, surfing, and beach volleyball; Nichole loves to dance swing, hula and modern dance. On the weekends, we spend a lot of time at the beach and visiting with friends downtown. In the summertime, we love to travel!
