About this listing

Queen bed room in teacher's renovated Victorian house with lock on bedroom door. Very quiet for good sleep. New ensuite private bathroom. In-room coffeemaker and refrigerator. No kitchen use except microwave. Please use dining room for meals --no eating in bedroom. All day free street parking; many buses nearby; subway (BART) to/from airport. Cortland Avenue, with many shops, is a 10 minute walk. I have a cat which stays outside & in my room, never goes into dining room, living room or bedrooms.

The space

Welcome to my home, a renovated 1880s Victorian house with hardwood floors, south-facing bay window with city view, wifi, two fireplaces. Quiet queen bedroom sleeps 2. Free all day street parking; many nearby buses & subway (BART) to city center. or airport. Flea market & farmers market nearby. Note that there is a flight of steps up to my front door.
Your room has a comfortable queen size bed, large closet and cabinets. The bedroom is not sunny, but is VERY quiet for good sleeping (with room-darkening drapes) and has a yellow rose bush and flower box outside your window. The newly remodeled en suite bathroom has a Swash bidet heated toilet seat with warm water wash function. House has a washer and dryer which you can use certain hours--just ask if you want to use them.
My room is at the back of the house past the kitchen, so you will have plenty of privacy. Feel free to use the dining room to have self-prepared breakfast.
I am a retired college English teacher. I've hosted international students and tourists for over twenty years and have lots of books with suggestions for places to go & things to see if you are new to SF. And I'm happy to tell you about my favorite spots.
My house is in Bernal Heights, a diverse, friendly neighborhood with a great city view from the top of Bernal Hill. The Cortland Avenue area is like a small village within the city. You'll find a library, organic grocery store, gourmet foods shop, yoga studio, art gallery, bank and several bars (one of which has live music). If you want to rest, people watch and talk to the locals, try sitting on the wall outside the Library. If you're hungry, there are plenty of restaurants, including Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Indian and California cuisine. Recommended restaurants on Cortland: Bernal Star Café and Vega, an Italian restaurant & pizzeria.
If you rent a car, there is EASY street parking near the house during the day; if you come back late you might have to park a couple of blocks away (try Holly Park or Agnon St--safe to walk.) It's a 15-20 minute walk to Glen Park BART subway station (12 minute ride to downtown and half an hour to the airport). There is also a bus which stops in front of my house and goes directly to & from the BART station. Also nearby are several buses going downtown (25 min. on the 14R); to Ocean Beach and the SF Zoo; the Castro area; and Fisherman's Wharf.

Guest access

Feel free to use the living room and dining room. You can buy breakfast or dinner take out foods at Good Life Grocery on Cortland Avenue--roast chicken, sushi, salads, etc.

Interaction with guests

I enjoy chatting with guests when they arrive and at any other time they wish. Happy to share my knowledge of the city, favorite restaurants, transportation info, etc. Of course, totally respect your privacy.

The house dining room is right outside the bedroom and there were evening card games there or in the living room next to the dining room. Sheets and bed comfortable but the frame is askew near pillows and a little lower.

Response from Rita:
Jane told me they would arrive at 4 pm. When they didn't arrive by 6:30, I decided to have the bridge lesson in the dining room. They arrived around 7:30 and the card lesson was over by 8:30. Another thing, Jane told me they would stay at a friend's house the second night. In the morning all their luggage was gone, so I made up the room for the next guest. Lo and behold, Jane arrives later that day. Jane, you need to communicate better. Also, Airbnb sent you my phone number.

Rita was great. The location and house is very historic. House was built in the early 1900s and has that San Francisco feel. The location is awesome Bernal Heights is a beautiful area. The neighborhood has a charm. The room Rita provided has its own bathroom inside of the room which gave me privacy I liked. Thank you!

The room was cozy and Victorian in design. Very comfortable bed and nice hot shower. Very sweet and friendly host! Quite close to the airport and can travel to city using Uber Pool quite easily...which could turn out to be cheaper if travelling in pairs.
