The Space

Welcome to my home, an1880s Victorian house with hardwood floors and south-facing bay window with city view, internet access and updated kitchen. No charge for second person, and no cleaning fee. Check out my Guidebook for info. about the neighborhood!

Your room has a comfortable queen size bed, small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. Feel free to buy breakfast items at local grocery store and have breakfast in the dining room. The bedroom is not sunny, but is VERY quiet for good sleeping (with room-darkening shade) and has a yellow rose bush and flower box outside your window. The newly remodeled en suite bathroom has a Swash bidet warmed toilet seat with warm water wash function. House has a washer and dryer--just ask if you want to use them.

My room and bathroom are in the back of the house past the kitchen, so you will have plenty of privacy. Feel free to use of the living room with city view, TV and gas fireplace. Of course I am always happy to chat with you and answer any questions you might have.

I am a retired college English teacher with one shy cat (you might never see her). My son, a computer engineer, used to live with me but he is now working in Germany. I've hosted international students and tourists for over twenty years and have lots of books with suggestions for places to go & things to see if you are new to SF. And I'm happy to tell you about my favorite spots!

My house is in Bernal Heights, a diverse, friendly neighborhood with a great city view from the top of Bernal Hill. The Cortland Avenue area is like a small village within the city. You'll find a bookstore, library, organic grocery store, yoga studio, art gallery, bank and several bars (one of which has a bluegrass night). If you want to rest, people watch and talk to the locals, try sitting on the wall outside the Library. If you're hungry, there's a plethora of restaurants, including Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Indian and California cuisine. Recommended restaurants on Cortland: Liberty Café and Vega, an Italian restaurant & pizzeria.

If you rent a car, there is EASY street parking near the house during the day; late at night you might have to park a couple of blocks away (try Holly Park or Agnon St.) It's a 15-20 minute walk to Glen Park BART subway station (12 minute ride to downtown and half an hour to the airport). There is also a bus which stops in front of my house and goes directly to & from the BART station. Also nearby are several buses going downtown (20 minutes on the 14L); to Ocean Beach and the SF Zoo; the Castro area; and Fisherman's Wharf.

Guest Access

Feel free to use the living room. You can use the kitchen to prepare breakfast and eat in the dining room.

Interaction with Guests

I tend to hang out in the kitchen. I enjoy chatting with guests when they arrive and at any other time they wish. Happy to share my knowledge of the city, favorite spots, transportation info, etc. Of course totally respect their privacy.

The Neighborhood

There's a village feel to the main business street, Cortland Avenue. Many interesting shops and the shopkeepers are friendly. Wonderful library, wine bar, bookstore, yoga studio, coffeeshops, restaurants. Check out the Guidebook!

Getting around

Free & easy street parking. 23 bus is at corner; 14, 49 and 14L are about a block away; 24 bus on Cortland Ave. BART is 15-20 minute walk away (30 minute ride to airport).

Other Things to Note

2 day minimum pertains to weekdays only. If you include a Friday or Saturday, it must be a 3 day booking. Airbnb doesn't allow the host to state this in the Terms section.

  • Rita was very sweet and helpful lady. The house and our room was fantastic, we really loved it. From house to union square its easy (1 bus) but its a little bit far away ( with bus about 1 hour) but it worth it.

    Response from Rita:

Thank you, and welcome back any time.
Maybe you meant Fisherman's Wharf is about an hour by bus?
14 Mission bus to Union Square takes 30 minutes from my house.

  • Rita is a great host, friendly and welcoming. She respected our privacy. Her place is charming. Our room was clean and quiet like described in her announce. Very closed to bus station. I recommended this place and I'll come back for my next stay in San Francisco.

  • The room is exactly as the picture shows, which i'm so fond of. Rita is very thoughtful and helpful. She made us access to her house quite easily although she was not at home the day we arrived. We stayed two nights at Rita's house. It is comfortable and quite. We were very much appreciated that she respected our privacy and let us have a cozy stay. Thank you, Rita.

  • my cousin and I stayed at Rita's house for a total of two days. our room was very clean, the bed was comfortable, and Rita was always around to make sure we were getting along comfortably. Parking spaces in this area are pretty much abundant, which works out for anyone traveling by car. There's an awesome view of the city, which is easy to navigate and not far from her house.I would recommend staying here if you are in the area.

  • Very nice room with en-suite shower. We parked on the Holly Park Circle which is less than 5 minutes away from the flat. Parking is free you just need to check for street cleaning hours on certain mornings (Rita kindly informed us of all of this in advance). Overall, we would definitely return again.
