I am a retired college English teacher. I've hosted international students and tourists for over twenty years and have lots of books with suggestions for places to go & things to see if you are new to SF. And I'm happy to tell you about my favorite spots.
My house is in Bernal Heights, a diverse, friendly neighborhood with a great city view from the top of Bernal Hill. The Cortland Avenue area is like a small village within the city. You'll find a library, organic grocery store, gourmet foods shop, yoga studio, art gallery, bank and several bars (one of which has live music). If you want to rest, people watch and talk to the locals, try sitting on the wall outside the Library. If you're hungry, there are plenty of restaurants, including Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Indian and California cuisine. Recommended restaurants on Cortland: Bernal Star Café and Vega, an Italian restaurant & pizzeria.
If you rent a car, there is EASY street parking near the house during the day; if you come back late you might have to park a couple of blocks away (try Holly Park or Agnon St--safe to walk.) It's a 15-20 minute walk to Glen Park BART subway station (12 minute ride to downtown and half an hour to the airport). There is also a bus which stops in front of my house and goes directly to & from the BART station. Also nearby are several buses going downtown (25 min. on the 14R); to Ocean Beach and the SF Zoo; the Castro area; and Fisherman's Wharf.
Feel free to use the living room and dining room. You can buy breakfast or dinner take out foods at Good Life Grocery on Cortland Avenue--roast chicken, sushi, salads, etc.
