Location

Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan

Situated well above the city of Kyoto, the Takagamine area became an artistic colony in the early 17th century, when the shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu gave some land to Hon'ami Koetsu, who was a famous potter, swordsmith, paper-maker, and calligraphist. He is buried in the local Koetsuji temple, well-known for its autumn colours, tea houses, and views of the mountains. You may hear the temple bell every morning and evening.
Nearby is the Soto Zen temple of Genkoan. Here you can see a "blood ceiling", the ghostly, bloody footprints of defeated samurai who committed suicide when their castle was overthrown. The floorboards of the castle were distributed to various temples in order to set the spirits of the samurai at peace. There are also two interesting windows to see: the window of enlightenment, and the window of the everyday world.
Next door to Genkoan is Joshoji, a temple where Yoshino Daiyu, a famous courtesan is buried.
A five-minute walk from the house will take you to the Shozan resort complex, which includes several good restaurants, a very nice shop for characteristic Japanese presents, a swimming pool, bowling alley, and a very fine garden. Well worth a visit.
There is a convenience store a ten minute walk away.

Originally from the U.K., I have lived in Japan since 1979, where I retired in 2014 after a long career teaching. My interests include reading, playing the piano, writing music, and the Way of Tea. I share the house with Masashi (a somatologist) and several cats.
