This flat is located in a quiet little street in the very city centre, and probably has most of the required things to live a great Madrid experience.
It is located walking distance to most major tourist destinations in Madrid. For more information, please visit my blog specifically done for guests staying at VillaJardines (please go to villajardines at wordpress).
The flat is located where the old stables of the palace used to be. It is a ground floor, at street level, with an independent entry in the building. What you can see in the pictures is where they used to store the horse carriage and part of the flat of the driver and his family. That was in the 19th century. Now it is modern flat ;-)
A. THE FLAT.
62m² (667 ft²) fully equipped apartment with high ceilings (4 m, 13 ft) that used to be part of the old stables of a palatial building, specifically where the driver lived and stored the Marchis del Busto's carriage. Located on the ground floor.
One silent bedroom with double bed (150x200), a big closet and a door heading to a silent little courtyard.
One bathroom with a big marble shower.
One kitchen with fridge, washing machine and dish washer. Dishes, cuttlery, cups, glasses and whatnot. Fondue machine. Lots of spices for fun cooking. Convenient sideboard. Perfect if you prefer home cooking.
One sitting room with a big table, wi-fi and a sofa that can be turned into a bed.
The flat is located in the very centre of Madrid. It is very well connected (train station at Sol, metro station at Sol, Gran Via or Sevilla and numerous bus stops).
It is in a quiet street with hardly no cars (just for residents). It is walking distance to all major museums, historical places and cool commercial areas (shops, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, musicals, night clubs, etc) in a truly lively neighborhood.
C. THE STREET.
The street is between Sol and Gran Via. Sol is the geographical centre of both Madrid and Spain. No cars are allowed in the street, just for residents (and that makes it pleasantly silent).
The street is only 300 metres long and also hosts two pharmacies, two convenience food stores, one fruit shop, one bike rental, several restaurants (Mexican, Russian, American, and Peruvian) and a couple of Spanish tapas and drink bars and a beautiful guitar repair shop.
D. THE BUILDING.
The building dates back to 1629 and first belonged to the Marchioness of La Floresta.
On 1st August 1799, a young Simon Bolivar, father of six nations in Latin America, alledgelly moved to the building, along with his uncle Esteban de Palacios, father of the 1812's Spanish Constitution.
In 1868 the Marchis del Busto fully renovated the building, according to the taste of the time. He was the personal doctor of Isabel II, Queen of Spain, as well as a Senator, member of the Order of Malta, a prolific writer, an extravagant philantropist and hosted scientific debates and a wild social life in the building.
In 1901 the building was donated to the Catholic Church and it was savagely vandalised in 1937, in the middle of the Civil War, and the cellar became one of Madrid's checas (people's prison). In 1938 a bomb destroyed the facade.
In 2012 the building was totally restored according to available information from 1868.
I was born in Madrid and have lived abroad for many years. I came back to Madrid in 2002 and decided to live the Madrid experience for good. After so many years away from home I discovered Madrid at a mature age....and found a fascinating city. I am very passionate about what Madrid can provide as a cool city, so if you want to live the Madrid experience, please do not hesitate to contact me. It is always a pleasure!
I live upstairs, so if you need anything at anytime, you just need to buzz your upstairs neighbour.

Where do I start? This was the perfect place in the perfect location with the perfect host. I know that it's hard to attain perfection, but it doesn't get much better than this. When we arrived we were greeted by Rafael who was gracious enough to give us a great walking tour of part of the city and throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. Do not worry, this is not a boring tour. It's filled with fun facts, historical lessons, architectural nuances of the city, and other great bits of information. The best part was the conversation with Rafael that we hoped wouldn't end because he's such as interesting guy.
On to the actual apartment. It's on the ground floor and looks exactly like the photos, but even better. Because of it's location on the ground floor, there can be some street noise, but honestly it added to the feel of the place. It felt more like an urban hangout. With it's eclectic feel and interesting decor, there is always something new to discover on the walls above your head. The ceilings are probably 20 feet tall, which adds to its dramatic flair. The place is a great size for two people, but would comfortable fit 3 or 4. Rafael left the kitchen well-stocked. We brought a few groceries, but ended up not needing them because he provided many things. The bed was super comfortable and floor, while tile, was never too cold. The bathroom was great, towel warmer, large shower, excellent water pressure, and overall trendy feel. We absolutely loved the patio off of the bedroom. It's a little dark at night as there are no lights out there and it gets very little direct sunlight, but its a neat, intimate space for hanging out with a glass of wine.
It's located just 2 blocks over from Puerta del Sol, about a 5 minute walk to Plaza Mayor, 4 min from Gran Via, 5 min from the clubs and bars of Chueca, and about 5-7 minutes from anywhere else that you would want to go. We ended up taking the metro to the airport when leaving which was quite a bit more convenient than we thought.
We would stay here a hundred times over and recommend it to anyone going to Madrid. The only feedback I would have is to buy more clothes hangers and put some kind of light outside on the patio. If that's the worst I could come up with, that's pretty good.
It was a wonderful week in the Spanish capital! Madrid has won our hearts as soon as we got out of the metro. He is a beautiful, clean, very energetic and very comfortable. The wonderful museums with its rich collections, excellent parks and Botanical gardens, delicious cookery, fresh oysters on the Mercado San Miguel, nice and quite inexpensive shopping, medieval city in one hour distance, passionate flamenco and no less passionate corrida del torres- all this Madrid!
But now Madrid I will always be associated with Rafael is a wonderful host of wonderful apartments in this wonderful city. Rafael is very nice, interesting and charming. He was a hospitable host, very caring and attentive. The apartment is clean, stylish and comfortable. It has everything you need and even more. The location is beyond all expectation - is this really the center of the city. I also want to mention a very useful and interesting content for the blog Raphael (website hidden). It helped us during the preparation for the trip, and so we were able to enjoy a stay in Madrid in full. Thank You, Raphael! We will be happy to come to Madrid again and be sure to stay in your apartment:-)
Being able to live in this beautiful apartment and meeting Rafael was the highlight of our three-day stay in Madrid! The apartment is spacious and exactly, if not better, than the photos shown. Its location is perfect to see all the major attractions of the city on foot, besides being right in the centre of Madrid. Our host was the best we have ever encountered! Rafael was kind enough to take us around the city centre and explain the history of Madrid and the different districts which make up this wonderful city.
We look forward to visiting Madrid again, and we would, without hesitation, return to one of Rafael's beautiful apartments. It was truly a wonderful experience!

Rafael was wonderful! The place is stunning! Right after making the reservations we found out my partner would be stuck at work an extra day in another city. With the advance notice, Rafael let us alter our reservations by a day without a question.
I still got there hours earlier because work kept my other half behind in Barcelona. Rafael provided me with a wonderful walking tour, roaming around the local area of Madrid, complete with accurate historical descriptions and knowledge that most would never have received taking one of those annoying bus tours. Our only regret was that we did not get to stay longer! Comfortable bed and lots of room to stretch out in the beautiful living area. Cannot recommend his apartment enough! Hopefully we will be able to return soon. Thank you once again Rafael!
Great appartment, great location, great host! Thank you so much. We enjoyed our time in Madrid.
Phil and I had a wonderful stay in Rafael's apartment in Villa Jardines! The photos don't do it justice, it is gorgeous! We knew it was very central from the map, but you really are right in the centre of Madrid. Even so, the flat was lovely and quiet in the evening.
Rafael was a brilliant host and on our first night he took us to the market of San Miguel, a fantastic place to have tapas and try all different sorts of food and drink. He walked us through the city to help us get our bearings which was invaluable once we started to explore the next day.
We had totally forgotten to pack a uk adaptor for our charger, and with limited spanish were a bit lost on where to find one, but Rafael picked one up for us within hours! He was a very generous host!
We would 100% recommend staying here and hope to be back to visit Madrid again soon. Thank you Rafael!
Rafael is the perfect host. Couldn't have asked for anything better. This was my first time in Madrid and I am so grateful I stayed with Rafael. He made me feel truly welcome, safe and excited about my stay. Rafael welcomed me at the flat and after getting settled, he offered to take me on a brief tour of the city and surrounding areas. He taught me the layout and how to get around, even pointed out local architecture and taught me some history too! I can see his passion about this city, which added to my joy in being there! The flat is simply amazing. I was here for work as a writer and wow, what an inspiring place to write, create, dream, reflect, and rest. A rare find! I would recommend this flat to anyone. I had an experience I will never forget. Rafael checked in with me and asked if I needed anything at all. The last day when I checked out, I ended up needing to find a place to stay for an additional night and Rafael helped me to find a room. He went above and beyond the call. You will not be disappointed if you book this room. I guarantee you will have a trip that will remain a fond memory forever. This is truly the magic of Madrid!
This was our first airbnb experience and we could not have asked for a better host or flat. Rafael absolutely lives up to all of the positive comments everyone has left. We enjoyed spending time with him and regretted that there was not more of it.
Rafael is like a walking history book and can answer any question you might have about Madrid, Spain and the Spanish culture.
The flat is great. Even though our visit was during the winter months, Rafael kept the flat at a very comfortable 70 degrees.
Every request we had was met promptly. The flat is fully stocked with anything you might need, from body soap to laundry soap. There is a huge drying rack for hanging your fresh laundered clothes and we found that it usually took just one day for most items to air dry and 2 for jeans.
The flat is located in the very center of Madrid and within walking distance of everything. The only time we had to use public transit was to go outside of the city. The bedroom is situated toward the back of the flat and despite there being a restaurant or some type of club next door, we could not hear a thing from the street, when in the bedroom. I am a very light sleeper and had no trouble at all. We felt safe at all times, even when we returned to the flat long after dark.
I would not hesitate to stay with Rafael again and we hope to be able to return some day in the near future. When we do, we will be staying with Rafael.
Just returned from our first visit to Madrid and a week's stay at Sol. Noble building. Old stables. The traditional charm of the restored building combined with the facilities and interesting artwork made it a pleasure to return to each day. Its location was perfect for getting around - all the main sights within walking distance and the Metro, at the top of the street.
Rafael was the perfect host and as a third-generation Madrileño has a wealth of knowledge about the the city and its history. We had the privilege of a tour on our first morning, which stood us in good stead for finding all the interesting places that Rafael had pointed out. His enthusiasm for his native city was a delight!
Nothing was too much trouble for Raphael, and our thanks go to him for a great holiday.
Look no further - this is the place to stay.
When my best friend & I decided to include Madrid in our adventure I started to look for accommodation on Airbnb. I found Rafael's listing in my first search and the reviews were amazing, but like everyone I continued to look but kept coming back to the charming reviews about the host, the accommodation and the area.
Every word written and the photos do not do this charming gentleman and his amazing apartments justice. To meet him, to stay in his apartment and to be shown Madrid by Rafael was one of the highlights of our trip.
Even though we arrived late at night Rafael was there to meet us and show us through our flat, which was clean, warm and filled with amazing art, everything we could wish for.
Once we were settled he offered to take us on a stroll through the streets so we were familiar with our new surroundings.
The apartment is so central to everything that we walked to all of the Museums, parks and the best shopping.
Rafael took us to the flea markets on Saturday which was a fabulous experience with our host showing how to bargain for treasures like a local.
Nothing was to much trouble, even our late night text to ask where to eat was answered in record time leading us to a fabulous, inexpensive and beautiful restaurant around the corner.
Rafael's knowledge of the history of Spain, the story behind the apartment building and the restoration he has undertaken to restore this fabulous building were a highlight of our wonderful stay.
Truly inspirational, a labour of love and it shows - we felt it the minute we arrived.
So a big thank you Rafael. You and your beautiful Stable are true treasures of Madrid and should be applauded.
We will be back, till then keep doing what you do so well:)
